(CBS/AP)  A suicide car bomber rammed a truck carrying Shiite pilgrims returning from a major religious commemoration Sunday, killing at least 32 people a day after Iraqi leaders warned sectarian violence could eventually spread around the region.

The truck was among the convoys carrying millions of pilgrims home from Karbala in southern Iraq, where millions of Shiites gathered over the weekend — where they also mourned the deaths of hundreds of pilgrims killed by suspected Sunni extremists last week heading for the ceremony.

Attacks on other pilgrim convoys killed at least five people in Baghdad. In northern Iraq, a suicide bomber attacked the offices of Iraq's biggest Sunni political party, killing three guards.

In central Baghdad, the truck was bringing about 70 men and boys home when it was blasted by the car bomber. At least 24 people were injured, police and hospital officials said.

One of the pilgrims, Mustafa Moussawi, a 31-year-old vegetable store owner, said he felt safe after crossing from Sunni-dominated areas and reaching central Baghdad.

"Then the car bomber slammed us from behind," said Moussawi, who suffered injuries to his right hand and shoulder. "I blame the government. They didn't provide a safe route for us even though they knew we were targets for attack."

Iraqi security officials have struggled to protect the annual pilgrimage to mark the end of 40 days mourning for the 7th century battlefield death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. Shiites consider him rightful heir of Islam's leadership, which cemented the rift with Sunni Muslims.

More than 3000 Shiite pilgrims were killed by suspected Sunni bombers and gunmen as they streamed toward Karbala, about 50 miles south of Baghdad.

The violence this week carried additional worries for U.S.-led forces, who entered Sadr City last week under a carefully negotiated deal with political allies of the Madhi Army militia, led by radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

He has agreed to withhold his armed militia from the streets during a U.S.-Iraqi security crackdown begun last month. But attacks on his power base could encourage al-Sadr to send his fighters back to protect Shiites if U.S.-Iraqi forces cannot.

They could also rekindle tit-for-tat sectarian killings that have receded since the Baghdad security push began nearly four weeks ago.

In Other Developments:

  • A suicide bomber killed three people at a reception at an office of Iraq's largest Sunni political party, a police and party officials said Sunday. The blast tore through the lobby of the Iraqi Islamic Party's headquarters in Mosul (about 225 miles northwest of Baghdad) at midnight, said Mohammed Shakir al-Ghanam, a party official. Two other guards were wounded, he said.

  • Also Sunday, a roadside bomb killed two women in a civilian car in Mahmoudiyah, 20 miles south of Baghdad, police said.

  • The bodies of two men, shot execution-style in the head, were found on a road south of Kirkuk, 180 miles north of Baghdad, said police Brig. Burhan Tayib Taha.

  • In central Baghdad, a bomb-rigged car killed at least three pilgrims and injured six.

  • At about the same time, a suicide bomber detonated a belt packed with metal fragments inside a minibus heading to a mostly Shiite area, killing at least 10 people and wounding five.

  • The U.S. military said that American and Iraqi troops had captured three suspected members of a bomb-making cell north of Baghdad. The men were detained during an air assault Saturday in Tarmiyah, the military said in a statement. The suspects were accused of planting roadside bombs and car bombs in attacks on American and Iraqi troops, it said.

  • The military also announced the capture of a suspected financier of insurgents in Kirkuk province, who was taken into custody last Wednesday, another statement said.

  • Also Sunday, a roadside bomb killed two women in a civilian car in Mahmoudiyah, 20 miles south of Baghdad, police said.

    There is no photograph of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and no physical description of him can be found. There is only the audio of him.

    What is your problem? I am one of many unapologetic liberals who happen to live in the South. My state of Arkansas experienced a Democratic landslide, much like the rest of the country, this last November. We are not all ignorant hicks.     Hard to believe that 7Pesos would be a Yankee, we generally get enough education to get past that bile. Hench the blue states that have quality public education. Those regretable persons up north that don't get over such bigotry generally can express themselves better. You would be a welcome addition to Florida. We have still way too many Bush loving suck ups. We need more sensible, moderates to balance them out. As for the apparent topic - the war in Iraq, there was never any other reason but oil. The rest is blue smoke and mirrors that David Copperfield would have trouble matching. The chronies that Bush serve have stolen, what 60B in oil during this occupation? I think that is the number I have heard, not on Fox of course. Not a cent of taxes paid on it either.

    You're absolutely right. People like ricky have taken religion to the level of a mental illness. In another thread here he said Israel will never be defeated because god has his hand of protection over it. People who make such ignorant claims are the reason religious wars start. Take this one for example:

    "I very well much care about human lives lost, but you know what, there are some evil people in this world like these radical Islamic extremists and they need to be defended against, whether you seem to think so or not."

    Here he is advocating the death of the entire Muslim people, who BTW the way number in the 10's of millions. Of course he lies and says he hopes they convert knowing dam*n well they won't and indeed should not have to. It's not up to ricky to sentence these people to death, but he has. He is no different in any way whatsoever then the people he wants to see destroyed. No different because he is positive his god is right and they are positive their god is right.     Oh and as for lars, he's insane, but much more troll like. Ricky is too but he articulates his insanity a bit better. That doesn't change the fact that both are as mad as a March Hare. Wacko. Crazy. Mentally ill. Mad. Nuts. Etc. And not just that but while lars is so obviously nuts that no one takes him seriously, ricky has just enough veneer on his madness to have a little respectability. Remember about 15 years ago when America's Most Wanted did the profile on the very religious man who murdered his mother, wife and I believe it was 4 children then disappeared for about 20 years? Well that's ricky's future all the way. He's nuts in a truly dangerous way and I hope someone intervenes before he murders a bunch of people. Otherwise we'll be seeing his neighbors (and fellow church goers) on TV saying things like, "Well I knew he was devout, but I never thought he'd kill!" or "But he was such a good christian man, who would have know he'd do something this sick?" or "You mean he killed them all?". Religion on ricky's level is a psychosis that needs serous and long term treatment, preferably in patient.

    Would you agree that both actions are sins? If the Bible says one is better than the other, that would be a rating system.

    And, I suggest that for you to say that Foley raping little boys is no worse that Clinton getting a BJ is a sin in itself. Clinton's act hurt no one.. until your evil and corrupt party forced it in the open, then it hurt his family, no one else.

    He is no different than ghetto trash that spray paints billboards, buildings and public property for no reason other than to draw attention to the fact he is a hooligan.

    George Bush derives a tremendous sense of satisfaction from having the power to order people to their deaths. He exposed that character flaw when he was running for president the first time.

    While he was still governor of Texas and running for president, he appeared on Larry King's tv show. Bush made a "joke" about Karla Faye Tucker's (no relation) impending execution in Texas.

    Demonstrating that he considers someone's death to be a laughing matter.

    George Bush is the worst president in US history, a pathological liar and literally a psychopath.

    We can't predict who may follow his lead, but he is the first blood thirsty dictator (wannabe) of the 21st century.

If you are going to "Reclaim" something and you are willing to go to the point of using the Government to INFORCE you ideals, winning them over the old fashioned way is out of the question.
