(CBS/AP)  The shadowy leader of the Islamic State of Iraq, an al Qaeda-inspired group that challenged the authority of Iraq's government, was captured Friday in a raid on the western outskirts of Baghdad, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

Abu Omar al-Baghdadi was arrested along with several other insurgents in a raid in the town of Abu Ghraib, said Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman for the Baghdad security operation. U.S. officials had no confirmation of the capture and said they were looking into the report.

Al-Moussawi said al-Baghdadi admitted his identity, as did another "of the terrorists" who confirmed "that the one in our hands is al-Baghdadi."

The arrest of al-Baghdadi would be a major victory for U.S. and Iraqi forces in their fight against Sunni insurgents, especially the hardcore religious extremists who have shown no interest in negotiating an end to their struggle.

But some analysts have pointed out that the al Qaeda-linked extremists rebounded following the death last June of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the charismatic al Qaeda in Iraq leader who died in a U.S. air strike in Diyala province.

The self-styled Islamic State of Iraq was proclaimed in October, when a militant network that includes al Qaeda in Iraq announced in a video that it had established an Islamic state in six provinces including Baghdad that have large Sunni populations, along with parts of two other central provinces that are predominantly Shiite.

Unlike al-Zarqawi, virtually nothing is known of al-Baghdadi, including his real name. It is widely assumed that the name al-Baghdadi was taken as part of a campaign to make al Qaeda appear more of a homegrown Iraqi movement rather than an organization dominated by foreigners.

In a tape released last November, al-Zarqawi's successor, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, called on Sunni Muslims to pledge their allegiance to this new state and said al-Baghdadi was "the ruler of believers" with al Qaeda in Iraq fighters under his command.

Since then, the trappings of an Islamic shadow state with al Qaeda as its base has been taking shape in some towns and cities of Anbar province where a government presence hardly exists, according to Sunni residents.

In Other Developments From Iraq:

  • President Bush's troop buildup in Baghdad apparently will be bigger and more costly — and perhaps last longer — than it seemed when he unveiled the plan in January as the centerpiece of a new Iraq strategy. The total number of troops required for the plan, while still uncertain, is climbing. When Bush announced the boost of 21,500 combat troops, the Pentagon said still others would be required to go with them in support roles. Its initial estimate of 2,400 support troops has doubled and may go higher still.

  • U.S. forces killed a suspected militant and captured 16 others in raids across Iraq, the military said. Among those detained were a man accused of working in al Qaeda's media wing and another believed to be responsible for kidnappings, beheadings and suicide attacks.

  • International envoys on Friday were preparing for Saturday's international conference in Baghdad, which will be held at Iraq's Foreign Ministry just outside the heavily-fortified Green Zone. Mohammed Shakeel, a Middle East analyst with the risk consultancy firm Global Insight, said the March 10 conference was "the first realization on the part of all of the parties involved" that the situation within Iraq could not be resolved by factors and influences within the country alone. "The input of Iran is essential here, the input of Syria and the rest of the neighbors, Saudi Arabia included. The fact that they have all been brought together is a realization that more needs to be done to bring the violence under control," he said.

  • Prime Minister al-Maliki strolled Baghdad's streets and visited police checkpoints Friday to showcase security ahead of Saturday's conference. He chatted with residents, shook hands with Iraqi soldiers and bent down to kiss children who lined up behind cement barriers in the street. But the tour — during a weekly four-hour vehicle ban every Friday for the Muslim holy day — also pointed out Baghdad's inherent risks. Al-Maliki's office did not release any advance details of the outing because of safety concerns, but issued photos afterward.

  • A civilian contractor who dismantled explosives in Iraq for an environmental management consulting and technical services company has been killed. Donald Neil, 44, of Marston, Mass., was handling an explosive when it detonated. It was Neil's second tour in Iraq as a civilian; he had served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years.

    It is convenient for liberals to forget that the "Grand Mufti of Jerusalem" went to Germany as a guest of Hitler during WWII...and begged Hitler to find the "final solution" to the jewish problem. This same Grand mufti used his influence to raise Two Muslim SS Divisions in Yugoslavia (Kosovo) and Albaina. These divisions were responsible for the murder of almost 1 Million jews, Serbs and Gypsies.

    This same Grand Mufti was the maternal uncle of Yassir Arafat! The Mufti's war continues today worldwide.

    As you can see clearly, Israel belongs to the real God in Jesus Christ, not "Allah" or the false prophet Muhammed. This is why the Muslims/Palestinians will never be able to completely overthrow Israel, because God Himself has His protective hand over that land. They(the Muslims) know that if they do not take over Israel that their false religion will be exposed. This is all this is about. That's why there's so much conflict over there.

This is no different then if he said Odin wrote a book that tells him he wants the Vikings to come back and reclaim all of Norway because that's what he told him again when praying to him. All prepare for the 2nd coming of Odin! But don't forget there'll be a "rapture" first when Viking long boats will be pulling up to a shore near you to take you away. Be sure to buy your blue gym suits and white tennis shoes. Oh wait, that's for the other god that comes in a space ship behind a comet. (sigh) Sometimes it's hard to get the fairy tales from bleeding over into each other. Where oh where is Jim Jones when you need him?

    karlimhof & bluestardad Read the report from the Harry S. Truman Institute conducted in Dec. of 2006, a majority of Palestians and Israelis want the Camp David Peace Accords to be implemented.The main stickler of the their disagreement is over the Golden Dome. Resolving the Israeli-Palestian crisis would be a determent to terrorist recruitment.

    AIPAC is a Zionist front organization posing as a lobbying group.

    They intimidate and pay our Congress for their unwavering support for israel to the detriment of the the USAs security, reputation, and economy.

    Because israel will not give back the land it has stolen since 1967 - we Americans get hit each year with billions of dollars of aid sent to israel, some in the "form" of loans, most FOC.

    And becuase the israelis won't return the land there are continual tensions - and we Americans get hit once again with the price of oil going up because of it.

    This trouble-making country (the size of New Jersey) has also spied against us numerous times
    and even tried to sink of our Navy vessels USS Liberty, killing 150 sailors in 1967 of the Sinai coast of Egypt.

    "Ally", "shared values", like AIPAC says about US and them? No thank you - if the israelis won't make peace and give the stolen land back to the Palestinians, we'll have to do it for them!

    David Michael Satterfield (born December 18, 1954) is an American diplomat who served extensively in the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf, Lebanon, and Iraq. He now serves as a Senior Advisor on Iraq for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

    His name came up in the AIPAC/Larry Franklin Pentagon mole case. The indictment, however, did not accuse Satterfield of any wrongdoing, and he was never indicted.

    In the indictment: U.S. v. Lawrence Anthony Franklin, Steven J. Rosen, Keith Weissman, USGO-2 is mentioned, and in a New York Times article: David Satterfield, deputy chief of the United States Mission in Baghdad, is identified as USGO-2. In early 2002, Satterfield discussed secret national security matters in two meetings with Steven J. Rosen. The meetings, on January 18, 2002, and March 12, 2002, were confirmed by classified documents. The indictment, however, did not accuse Satterfield of any wrongdoing.

Bush is in trouble again because the Democrats have rolled out another plan to stop the war each time that happens Bush trots out one of these Capture Stories! Bottom line is Bush is funding Al Qaeda in Lebanon with funds from Iraq. The Israeli and Saudi NEOCONs are pushing Bush to stay in Iraq and attack Iran.

    What leader? It costs $30 to make a roadside bomb. How many $30 roadside bombs does it take for a leaderless group of men to defeat an army of 180,000? Assuming a group of 5,000 men could make 100 roadside bombs a day at a cost of $3,000 or roughly $20,000 per week, then the enemy would spend about a million dollars a year to kill 70% of the troops that get killed. At the amount of money that Bush spends to armor plate vehicles against roadside bombs which barely work and the amount of soldiers that get killed by these roadside bombs there is no way to exit the war. The enemy can build one roadside bomb every time I fill up my gas tank. And the money would be handed to the enemy by the oil company board of director George Herbert Walker Bush who supports the Sunni Saudi Arabians who flew the planes into the world trade center. So why did Bush fabricate the WMD story? And why did he send all those soldiers to their deaths? And why do kids keep enlisting? And why are we proud of this? Why is capturing Baghdadi a story? Does it matter? Bush is pillaging the coffers of the treasury by instilling fear into the hearts of the people through the media.

    This story is very similar to the previous hundreds of stories proclaiming al qaida leaders had been killed or captured.

    Al qaida must have hundreds or thousands of qualified leaders since capturing or killing its leaders has no effect.

    Too bad US forces aren't so fortunate. They are led by the worst commander in chief in US military history. General Custer appears to be a master strategist compared to Bush and his military commander toadies.

    As does Osama Bin Ladin. Maybe we should appoint OBL to be the head of the US defense department. He's obviously much more qualified than anyone Bush has chosen.
