"Well, my understanding is that there are tens of thousands who might be eligible. And I'm disappointed that the figure seems to be so low," she tells Pelley.
"But the State Department would tell you that's all that can be physically accommodated in the system," Pelley remarks.
"Well, then the system's really shrunk since I did it," she replies.
In 1975, after the collapse of Saigon, Taft was in charge of finding homes in the states for South Vietnamese, who worked for the Americans.
"President Ford said, 'Let them come. Let's help them. This is what we must do for them. They deserve it,'" Taft remembers.
What was she able to accomplish?
"On the 20th of December, 1975, over 131,000 people had been resettled throughout the United States. Incredible," Taft recalls.
Those 131,000 people were brought to communities all over the United States between May 1 and December.
There was organized opposition then, but Taft says that when Americans saw these families arriving in the U.S., the opposition melted away. "It was a huge enterprise. But it never would have worked had there not been the sustained commitment on the part of the administration working with Congress to make it happen," Taft says.
"On the part of President Ford?" Pelley asks.
"Absolutely," Taft says.
Asked if she's not seeing the kind of political will and leadership in this case that she dealt with in 1975, Taft says, "I'm afraid that's the case."
"We took 131,000 Vietnamese in eight months. Nothing like that is even contemplated in this case," Pelley remarks to Ellen Sauerbrey.
"You know, that was in a different day. And the different day was it was prior to 9/11. After 9/11, the United States put into place very thorough security checks that didn’t exist at that time. And it takes a lot of time to work people through the security process," she explains.
But Taft says, "Some of these people lives are in jeopardy. You don’t wait around for months and months and months to try to find out if a former translator whose life has been threatened is gonna be a threat to the United States. You’ve already vetted this person. You know this person."
Retried General Paul Eaton worries about the message all of this is sending to America’s other allies in the world. "Anybody who threw their lot in with the Americans deserves an opportunity for a future. And the loyalty has got to be in both directions. If we do not take care of these people, then the signal to anybody else in the future is a bad signal. And if you throw your lot with the United States, they'll use you for a while and then they will - they'll just cut you off," he argues.
Asked if he thinks it's a matter of honor, Eaton says, "I believe this is a matter of morality."
Assistant Secretary Of State Sauerbrey told 60 Minutes last March that two to three thousand Iraqi refugees would be welcomed to the U.S. by the end of September. But the number is still little more than 100. As for the two Iraqi translators who spoke with 60 Minutes, both are still stuck in the Middle East.

See all 84 CommentsMuslims have been fighting a religious war in the Middle East for over 2,000 years, with no resolution and continuous conflict. I prefer it stay in the Middle East. Yes, it is selfish; but, we do not need to import more separatism.
I believe the US does owe these persons and their family some resolution to their problems, but it is not relocation to the US. Dare I say it, compensation to live in another Muslim nation, until and when the situation in Iraq is resolved (if ever it can be resolved?) would not be out of the question - yes I would be willing to pay the taxes to support such a retirement. I have a great concern for my family, country, friends, and neighbors that we are asking for additional trouble to bring these persons with such a strong religious affiliation into this country. How can these people practice their religion here and not practice acts against our nation''s people and national interests?
I guess Bush and his friends want to create a whole new gang system of former Iraqi traitors and riffraf here in the US. That''s real smart, what an amazing, smart, well run country! What a bunch of genius administrators we have, sure makes me feel secure! Now let''s lower that Fed rate, the rich need to get richer!

A TRUE believer huh? Sparky we are going to leave that country the only question is if we can manage to get it done with our Dictator on the job. You fascist have never liked the fact that the PEOPLE in this nation make the rules and THEY have decided we are leaving... Now I''d like for you to tell us, if you can muster enough brain power, who would you like to determine what we hear and see in this country. You OBVIOUSLY do not like the FREE Press and attack anyone who doesn''t hold to the Party Line when putting out the news so what would you like to do about it. Should we go ALL the way back to what you clowns wanted when Jefferson first put pen to paper and allow the KING to appoint someone to approve the news? Should we have a Propaganda Minister like your Hero, Hitler? Just how would you do it? Sieg Heil Bush!!
Wishful thinking, Taks, we will sooner or later (hopefully sooner) be out of there, and you will be on the front lines of the "don''t let the Muslims in" faction, agreeing that they not be allowed in. Like I said before, that is what they get for selling their brethren to a known liar.
Actually, we also didn''t declare war on Vietnam, either.
But back to the point, that is what they get for trusting a known liar, and selling out their own people.
Colin and Condoleeza, (Uncle Tom and Aunt Condi) take note, sooner or later it will be your turn.
If you hanen''t read AMERICA ALONE by Mark Steyn you are doing our country a great disservice and failing to see what is happening.
We need the truth, the facts and stop putting off what the Islamists are doing. We are not perfect but we will be distroyed if we don''t act imediately.
