The operation took place in Duluiyah and the Jabouri peninsula a bend in the Tigris River about 55 miles north of Baghdad part of the Sunni areas around Baghdad where insurgents have fled since the crackdown in the capital began last month.
The top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, said the security operation would be extended beyond the city limits to target these areas, which he referred to as "the Baghdad belt."
Petraeus did not put a time limit on how long the additional troops might remain in Iraq, but he said they're likely to be there beyond the summer, reports CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan.
"The priority clearly is Baghdad, (but) anyone who knows about security in Baghdad knows you must also secure the 'Baghdad belts' in other words, the areas that surround Baghdad," Petraeus told reporters at his first news conference since taking command last month.
Petraeus said the security operation would continue as long as necessary "to achieve its desired effect."
"We are still in the early days of this endeavor an endeavor that will take months, not weeks, to fully implement," Petraeus said.
Petraeus acknowledged that some kinds of attacks are almost impossible to stop, reports Logan.
There is a point at which if someone is willing to blow up himself, particularly, perhaps, disguise himself, and use a vest rather than a vehicle, the problem becomes very, very difficult indeed, he said.
Petraeus also said he had not decided whether to ask for additional troops beyond the 21,500 combat forces already earmarked for Baghdad. The last of the reinforcements are due in early June, he said.
In other developments:
The New York Times reported that the operational commander, Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno, recommended that the extra troops remain until February 2008. Odierno said the extra troops are needed to allow time to win over the Iraqi populace.

- It is convenient for liberals to forget that the "Grand Mufti of Jerusalem" went to Germany as a guest of Hitler during WWII...and begged Hitler to find the "final solution" to the jewish problem. This same Grand mufti used his influence to raise Two Muslim SS Divisions in Yugoslavia (Kosovo) and Albaina. These divisions were responsible for the murder of almost 1 Million jews, Serbs and Gypsies.
This same Grand Mufti was the maternal uncle of Yassir Arafat! The Mufti's war continues today worldwide.

Now in February of 2003 U.S. Army General Eric Shinseki who was fired by Rumsfeld (another idiot) and
is famous for his remarks to the U.S. Senate Armed Services committee before the war in Iraq in which he said "something in the order of several hundred thousand soldiers" would probably be required for post-war Iraq. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz publicly disagreed with his estimate. Dopes
When the insurgency took hold in post-war Iraq, Shinseki's comments and their public rejection by the civilian leadership were often cited by those who felt the Bush administration deployed too few troops to Iraq. On November 15, 2006, in testimony before Congress, USCENTCOM CENTCOM Commander Gen. John Abizaid ( former commnder of our forces there said that General Shinseki's estimate had proved correct. [2]

- Shingles: Myself, I offer no excuses for 'W'. I think that he is a failure (so far) as a military commander.
My criticism of 'W' revolves, as you may surmise from my previous post, around the fact that not nearly enough DEATH has been dealt out to those in Iraq who continue to resist. I am in favor of much more DEATH being visited upon the enemy - and - none at all up our own forces.
One cannot, however, ignore the FACT that the US military, under Clintoon-Gore, was decimated all while being tasked to do more and more 'feel good' missions which are far beyond their brief which led to encouragement of the enemy to attack our interests.
The Blackhawk Down incident revealed the lack of armor, absence of artillery, a failure which plagues the US to this very day and complete breakdown of basic soldiership in the officer ranks. The Romans and Barbarians had smarter officers than we do now. I'd like to say the Iraqis were smarter than we are, it seems obvious, but, it's not true. So Clinton had a year and a half to get Osama - who, by the ways hadn't yet killed 3,000 innocent Americans. The fact that Osama has not yet been caught is a slap in the face to those 3,000. And the fact that you would justify and excuse away Bush's half-axed inaction in pursuing justice is an insult to the dead.
