(CBS/AP)  A powerful bomb killed three American soldiers trying to clear explosives from a highway near Baghdad on Wednesday, and a suicide attacker blew himself up in a cafe northeast of the capital, killing 30 people and wounding dozens.

The deadly assaults occurred as Iraqi security forces struggled to protect more than 1 million Shiite pilgrims streaming toward the holy city of Karbala for annual religious rituals — and facing a string of attacks along the way that have claimed more than 150 lives in two days.

They included 22 people — 12 police commandos and 10 civilians — who died Wednesday in a car bombing at a checkpoint in southern Baghdad set up to protect pilgrims, the U.S. military said. An Iraqi TV cameraman working for a Shiite-owned station was among the civilian dead, his station said.

One American soldier was wounded in the attack on the bombing-clearing team on a major highway just north of the capital, the U.S. military said. The names of the victims were withheld until their families are notified.

American troops have stepped up efforts to clear and secure major highways around the capital as part of the Baghdad security crackdown, which began last month.

But the operation, which will eventually see an additional 17,000 U.S. combat troops in the capital, has so far failed to intimidate Sunni insurgents, who have retaliated with attacks outside the city, including those against Shiite pilgrims.

At least 13 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq since Sunday, all of them in Sunni areas north and east of Baghdad. Nine Americans died Monday, the deadliest day for the U.S. military here in nearly a month.

The suicide attack took place near sunset at a popular cafe in Balad Ruz, 45 miles northeast of Baghdad, where Sunni extremists have been forcing Shiites to flee through a campaign of assassination and intimidation.

A senior police officer said dozens of people were gathered around the cafe enjoying mild, sunny weather when the attacker struck, killing 30 people and wounding 25. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for his personal safety.

Iraqi security forces have been bracing for more trouble this weekend at the climax of Shiite religious rites marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Hussein's death in a 7th-century battle near Karbala cemented the schism between Sunnis and Shiites.

Hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims were streaming by bus, car and foot into Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, many of them marching behind banners affirming their reverence for Imam Hussein.

The targeted violence came a day after two suicide bombers exploded themselves among pilgrims lining up at a checkpoint, killing at least 120 people and wounding about 190, police and hospital officials said.

In other developments:

  • The Pentagon says it has approved the new U.S. commander in Iraq's request for more military police in Baghdad. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says General David Petraeus asked for 2,200 military police to handle what he expects will be a big bump in detainees during the Baghdad security push. That's on top of the 21,500 combat troops the president is sending to the capital, and the 2,400 others designated to support them.

  • Iran's foreign minister said his government would send a delegation to an international conference in Baghdad this weekend. The conference of Iraq's neighbors and the Big Five of the U.N. Security Council will be the first public encounter between U.S. and Iranian envoys since late 2004.

  • A police lieutenant and his 15-year-old son were shot dead in their car late Tuesday, police said, on a road in Diwaniyah, 80 miles south of Baghdad.

  • In Ramadi, the provincial capital of western Anbar, masked gunmen killed a butcher in his shop, police said.

You know if it were me I would leave Iraq and be a refugee some where else. When will this nightmare end for those poor people and for the men and woman who are somewhere they are not supposed to be. Thank you to the administration for all the great things you have accomplished. Can we send them there instead of the men and women that are there now.

BTW, in just a few more days your war will enter its 5th year. A big Happy Anniversary to you. Just think, in 4 years you have killed over 3184 American troops and wounded over 40,000. Have a nice day.

Some estimate of around 2 million refugees. This issue is rarely even discussed in the news. What an incredible waste Bush & Co. has created. He is not only an imbicle, but a sociopath as well. On the same page yesterday where Bush is STILL saying we are making progress, multiple deaths and uncounted injuries. Mission accomplished

Suddam killed 300,000 in 20 years. Over 500,000 have died since we ended his reign of terror just 5 years ago. Must be the new math.

Oh ya, I forgot weapons of mass destruction were the reasons we really went in. Too bad we never found them.

Bush is keeping this damned war going to save face for himself and his administration.

What could be more obvious ?

When they failed to find WMDs, other reasons to stay there were emphasized.

There is no way this war is in our national interest.

Heightened security after 9/11, particularly in the airports, is what has prevented further attacks on American soil, not this wasteful counterproductive war.

I don't know how Bush lives with himself, unless his conscience has been dulled and numbed by his admitted past alcoholism. Booze can have that longterm neurological effect.

They never did find "WMDs" in Iraq that could not also be forund in Japan or England or Bolivia or any other country on earth, excepting only Vatican City or Lichtenstein.

These proclamations about "we found this or that in Iraq" are a part of the ongoing campaign of public deception.

Thank God the American people as a whole aren't buying it.

George Bush works for ExxonMobil and other price gouging war profiteers.

Each day US forces are in Iraq, ExxonMobil rakes in another billion dollars they could not otherwise justify. Not to mention the billions that other war profiteers are raking in.

The only reason the US invaded Afghanistan or Iraq was for the direct benefit of ExxonMobil, et al.

And, George Bush would have probably been thrown out of office in 2004 if he he not unnecessarily began waging "war" on the entire world.

But, some people do argue that increasing ExxonMobil's profits is in the "national interest." A view I do not share. Nationalizing ExxonMobil would be in our national interest. Invading Afghanistan & Iraq were not.

George Bush & D. Cheney should be impeached.

Fortunately for Bush bootlickers, IBM and other big companies hired really smart people who invented machines even morons could manipulate.

While the operation became easier, it did nothing to cause the content to improve in quality. Hence, the saying, "Garbage In, Garbage Out," or "GIGO" for short.

Which is a term that applies to the content provided by all Bush bootlickers, especially you. You learned to copy & paste GIGO, which is a highly prized skill in the Bush bootlicker community, aka "boneheads." So named after their hero, a former member of the "Skull & Bones" group and Bonehead in Chief.

Now, to answer your specific question:

Even morons such as you can operate computers because really smart people designed them to be operated by morons. Such as you.

I am very angry at how our "President" of the U.S.A has handled this war. I beleave that if the people can not fight their own wars then that is on them. For years and years we have done nothing but helped these countries and in return we have to die for it. I myself suggests that are people come back home. Bush has sent to many of our men and women over seas for some thing they need to deal with on their own. We have our own war here in the states. We are finding and fighting the bad people out of here with no other countries help, so, why do we need to help them? If the "President" could please explain when and how we can end this I would be happy.

Hey troops, our government is running a double bookkeeping scheme on the american taxpayers. The second book is called CAFR or Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, that's where they hide all of our surplus tax dollars and profits they've made from investing that money from We The People. This is taking place on a school district, city, county, state, federal level, and the amount of money they're stealing from us is staggering. Our System(s) are so profitable that if the government actually worked for us instead of us being slaves for them, they could phase out taxes completely, still provide all of the same services, and still cut us a nice check every year.. THink about that for awhile, think about how they go kick old people out of their homes when they can't pay their taxes. Think about the government investing all of this money in the stock market and buying up controlling shares of every major corporation in the country which is what they're doing with it... that my friends is COMMUNISM. These surplus tax dollars need to be redistributed to the American People ASAP!

The CAFR double bookkeeping accounting scam is no conspiracy, the looting of trillions of dollars from american tax payers is all on official paperwork, many CAFR's are downloadable online, do a search for your local city, and state CAFR's and see how much your tax money and profits off of that money your government(s) are hiding from you. We'd all be very rich if our government worked for us instead of us being enslaved to it. They use money as the invisible boot on the back of your head. Redistribute the surpluses back to the american people now and give everyone their fair share of our great country! Stop voting for the COMMUNIST Republicans AND Democrats who have been stealing this money since 1946 when they started this double bookkeeping scam. Tell people in your community how much your county is hiding from them and still charging people property taxes. What a SCAM....

By Walter Burien the original exposer of this scam...

I got a call from an individual by the name of Joe Long, who runs a group called Federation of New Jersey Tax Payers. He called me up on a Sunday morning. He goes, "Walter, we just got New Jersey's 1998 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. They have $295 billion in liquid investment funds. Isn't that awful?" I said, "Joe, you're just looking at the state report. There's 21 counties, a couple hundred cities and municipalities, autonomous agencies - all separate reports. If you take the composite totals of the liquid investment funds, you're well in excess of $1.2 trillion. If you take the population of New Jersey and divide it into $1.2 trillion, that comes out to a cash allocation of $146,000 per man, woman and child living in the state or family of four (sic) [five], that equals seven hundred and some odd thousand dollars. The obfuscation of the wealth has been excessive.

    Army Brat:

You think we've helped these countries??? Why do you think there is so much US hatred in the Middle East.

You've bought the US propaganda that seeks to convince us how benevolent we are to other nations. Do your homework, and you will understand what a complete lie it is.

The US has meddled in the affairs of other nations for years. Coups, assinations, arm-twisting, support of brutal dicatatorships, use of "foriegn aide" as bribes... All to serve US corporate interests. In the middleast, just look at the history of Iraq, our support or Saddam. In Iran, a CIA plot toppled a popular moderate and we installed the brutal Shah of Iran, which culminated in their revolution, the rise of the Mullah's and Islamice fundatmentalism. Our blind support for Israel, not matter what they do, fuels the fires.

No, sorry, our nation is not benevolent "helpers" of other nations. We are militaristic exploiters of poor nations. Its the simple fact. It is why we are in Iraq.

Unfortunately, our policies have fueled fundamentalism, hatred and revenge. There were no Al Queda links to Iraq. After Ahbu Gharib, after we invade and occupy Iraq based on LIES, after we prop up dictatorships to secure our oil... what do you expect?

Bush and Cheney are people who thrive on power, fear, anger and revenge. They uses these evils as techniques to scare and lie their way into WAR. War for regional dominance, War for permanenet US bases in the middle east, War to secure and control access to the Oil, War for Profit.

It DOES NOT have to be this way! Why spend $600 BILLION on a needless horrific War. Spend 1/10 that amount on PEACE. We need a world based on love and compassion. The Republicrat WARs just fuel the cycle of hate, fear, revenge.

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... Why don't yuo leave the ***$ing country if we're so horrible. Move to France or whatever European country you feel is more "enlightened". That will mean there are more tissues for the women in our country.

What's really sad is that France was absolutely right about the invasion and occupation of Iraq being a huge mistake. And they are smart enough not to be paying the Chinese back billions in Treasury Bond interest payments for decades to come to finance this war for Oil and Israel. GW's twins and Cheney's daughter and grandchild won't be paying a dime for this war they aren't serving in if they get their unearned inheritance income tax-free.

    Bend over America!!

Umm Yeah...nice rant. It doesn't make any sense and doesn't add anything productive to the debate except to overtly advertise your lack of intelligence. If that was your aim, then you are on point there Amigo. Oh yeah...that war-making, white trash, ignorant guy....He won the last two elections.

So where exactly does the South and the Confederate flag have anything to do with this discussion. You are the smae jaka$$ that I smacked around a few days ago. You were saying (incorrectly)that the south elected Bush in the election. Here's the facts essay....Bush carried 30 states in '04. He also carried OHIO and IOWA, and the entire midwest. In other words you could say that Bush wiped his a$$ with your liberal pu$$y Kerry, just like I have just wiped my A$$ with you.
Bring some facts to the table you jacka$$.

Why do Bush supporters feel they have a right to tell other people who disagree with them to leave the country? I propose Bush or his supporters leave this country immediately before they completely and utterly destroy it.

Legalized torture, Abu Graib, warrantless wiretaps, lies about WMDs and Iraq's non-existent ties to the 911 attacks that have lead to the deaths and maiming of hundreds of thousands of innocent people American soldiers and Iraqi civilians, an increase of more then 3 trillion dollars in our national debt thanks to GWB and his supporters. Bushco is the most corrupt and vile administration in the entire history of this country or maybe on the entire planet.

    The quagmire continues.

Doing more of the same and expecting a different outcome is symptomatic of insanity.

But, the US is finally doing something right, no thanks to George Bush or the GOP.

The meeting with the Iranians and Syrians will do far more to accomplish the goals than will all the military forces the US can afford to lose in Iraq.

Diplomacy was the solution before the US led invasion and will always be the solution. No matter how many people George Bush murders before diplomats can resolve the mess he made.

George Bush is the worst president in US history and currently has the blood of over 3,000 brave US soldiers on his hands. Not to mention the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of innocent Iraqis he murdered.

George Bush should be impeached and prosecuted for conspiracy to commit murder. As should his boss, D. Cheney.

there is no idealism in the south.

southerners know nothing of diplomacy, tolerance, negotiation.

redneck bush loving thugs only know force.

that's why the ****** south will lose another war for america.

    i ****** on the south.

i wipe my azz with the confederate flag.

How stupid are Bush supporters? Here a good example, Blair tells Bush he is withdrawing two thousand troops from Basra. Bush tells the press this is good news that British troops are withdrawing but not to redeploy to Baghdad but to head home because things are supposedly "stabilizing". One the very same day they're pushing for their case for a "Surge" of an additional 24,000 U.S. troops because things are Baghdad needs to be "stabilized". You can't have it both ways (unless you're talking to a Bush supporter). Either the British reinforce U.S. troops or things have stabilized so both U.S. and British soldiers can withdrawal and there is no "surge" executed.

I hope every drop of blood of every brave american soldier and iraqui civilian who has died in Iraq stains every dream of Mr GWB so he can remember the mistakes he made until the day he dies. At least that is the price he must pay for starting this stupid war

Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Rielly are always criticizing the so called "Hollywood" Liberals. Where was their greatest "Conservative" Icon, Ronald Reagan, working before he became governor and president?

John Wayne is another one of the conservative Icons who embody all that is good about America, the America that can do no wrong and is always the "good guy". Hate to break the news, but John
Wayne was an "actor" from HOLLYWOOD who played simple characters in simple movies where everything was literally black and white.

Simple world, simple ideas for the simple minded. Its no wonder Bush holds such appeal for the Limbaugh crowd.

    King of the Retarded

    Leader of the Clueless

    Czar to the Ignorant

    Emperor of the Misinformed

President of Morons otherwise known as the "30%" of the rest of America

Some people compare George with Hitler but that would be an insult to Hitler who was a whole lot smarter but I have to hand it to George, he's up there with Hitler as far as being a convincing liar.

the funny thing is that where the British were it was even more peaceful before they arrived, and now they want us to believe that it has something to do with them. How retarded is that?. It's impossibloe for me to support the troops, that's so cliche already, especially when we have an army of volunteers, they go because they believed bush's lies. How can anyone support a mislead army that all is doing in Ira

How can anyone support a mislead army that all is doing in Iraq is creating more terrorists for al qaeda. There are more terrorists now than before, I never understood the mentality of those that say that they are fighting in iraq to make us safe here, there is a contradiction in that. The longer our illegitimate presence in Iraq the more wanna be terrorists we motivate, totally worthless mission.
