  • Interactive New Plan For Iraq

Key elements of the plan, excerpts from the president's speech, reaction and more.

(AP)  A suicide bomber struck Sunday outside a college campus in Baghdad, killing more than 40 people and injuring at leasr 45, as a string of other blasts and rocket attacks left bloodshed around the city.

The wave of attacks came a day after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki lauded the progress of an ongoing U.S.-Iraqi security operation seeking to cripple militant factions and sectarian killings in the capital.

The suicide attacker detonated a bomb-rigged belt near the main entrance to the college, where students were resuming mid-term exams after the two-day weekend in Iraq. Police said that guards confronted the bomber as he tried to enter the college grounds.

Authorities say most of the victims were students at the college.

A 22-year-old student, Muhanad Nasir, said he saw a commotion at the gate. "Then there was an explosion. I did not feel anything for 15 minutes and when I returned to consciousness, I found myself in the hospital," said Nasir, who suffered wounds to his head and chest.

The school is located in a mostly Shiite district, but does not limit its enrollment to that group. It's part of Mustansiriyah University, which is located in another area of the city, and was the target of twin car bombs and a suicide blast last month that killed 70 people.

In Other Developments:

  • Earlier today, two Katyusha rockets hit a Shiite enclave in southern Baghdad, killing at least 10, and a bomb near the fortified Green Zone claimed two lives, police said. The Green Zone houses the U.S. and British embassies and key Iraqi government offices. The blast was about 100 yards from the Iranian Embassy, but authorities did not believe it was targeting the compound.

  • A separate car bombing in a Shiite district in central Baghdad killed at least one person and injured four, police said.

  • In the northern city of Mosul, U.S. troops killed two gunmen in a raid and captured a suspected local leader of the insurgent group al Qaeda in Iraq, the military said. Additional details were no immediately available.

  • Iraq's interior ministry, meanwhile, raised the toll from a suicide truck bombing in the violence-wracked Anbar province on Saturday to 40 dead and 65 injured. The attack on worshippers leaving a mosque in Habbaniyah, about 50 miles west of Baghdad, was believed linked to escalating internal Sunni battles between insurgents and those who oppose them.

U.S. military envoys and pro-government leaders have worked hard to sway clan chiefs and other influential Anbar figures to turn against the militants, who include foreign jihadists fighting under the banner of al Qaeda in Iraq. The extremists have fought back with targeted killings and bombings against fellow Sunnis.

The imam of the mosque attacked Saturday had spoken out against extremists — most recently in this Friday's sermon, residents said. Many people in the neighborhood work for the Iraqi military and police forces, who frequently come under militant attack.

"There is no safe shelter for all outlaws," said al-Maliki, who reported that 426 militants have been captured since the Baghdad security campaign began Feb. 14.

But the crackdown also has sent Sunni insurgents fleeing the city to the nearby province of Diyala, which has emerged as a new and busy front for U.S. troops.

It has become so volatile that the Pentagon may delay plans to turn over control of Diyala to the Iraqi military by the end of the year, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon told The Associated Press.

But I would never kill you, no matter how much I dissagree with you. And I would ESPECIALLY never strap a bomb on myself and walk in to your house and blow myself up to kill you. And I would never load my car with bombs to kill you.

In that phrase alone you have captured the fool-hardiness of our adventure in Iraq. It is based purely on presumption - not knowledge. We presumed (correctly) that Iraqi's want to be free of tyranny. We also presumed (correctly) that they would have an appetite for democracy. However, we lacked real knowledge of the underlying tensions in Iraqi society, nor the cultural underpinnings and belief system. Everyday we are reminded of our lack of knowledge and as a consequence, rather than being able to develop a long term strategy, we are simply responding to events.

"Iraqi Deaths Mount, Many Americans Unaware" Sounds like a description of the "Christian" red states. As a Californian who is well aware of the destruction and loss of life the Bush cabal has wrought I feel fortunate to live in a progressive state that legalizes medicinal marijuana, funds our own stem cell research and wlil pass a personal freedom to die by your own choice bill soon. It's the backwards masses in the midwest that elected this bunch and are responsible for its actions. It's disgusting that they now claim ignorance of the misery they helped to bring about.

    heetseeker -

You are correct in all your points but I feel you neglect to mention the principal problem, which is, that they US is trying to use a completely useless military strategy in Iraq.

A standing army will never defeat a competent guerilla force that has the support of the local populace.

And it won't make any difference how many years we continue to employ it, the results will always be the same.

Please CBS,bring the real news(I know you can't because of Censor on war news).
    The right heading would be;
    "American deaths mount,many Americans Unaware".
According to Pentagon, there are One thousand attacks per week against US troops in Iraq. After looking at the sophistication of those attacks by an UNSEEN ENEMY who doesn't wear Military uniform, doesn't follow Geneva convention, and is ready to blow himself or herself up in order to kill his or her enemy, only a person living in fantasy world can believe that only one soldier dies in one of these attacks.Check out

    Click on
    Islamist website monitor project
Click on Islmist website monitor #17
Click on the video link under the heading of
Islmist video shows Bombings in Iraq.
One thousand attacks per week means more then One hundred and fourty attack per day.
Even if we assume that only one soldier dies in those attacks, the number of US death tolls become One Thousand per week and Four thousands per months.
If anybody thinks that govt and news media are not hiding the truth, check out that how many of those One Hundred and fourty attacks today have been reported in the news today.

This administration has been arrogant, reckless and duplicitious in its conceptualization of the Iraq "crisis" and their assumptions regarding fighting and winning in the region. Now, when their mistakes and incompetence are so transparent, their only recourse is to attack their critics as unpatriotic and aiding al Qaeda'a strategy. The opposite is true. The Bush strategy has failed to deal with the real war on terror in Afghanastan and has inspired Muslims to al Qaeda's and Hezbullah's position since we have occupied Muslim lands. They appear totally insensitive to the blood on their hands and toll of their mistakes on us all.

You are absolutely right. They love to be in the "STATE OF DENIAL".
We need to wake up before the next terrorist attack(which is not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN).
I've discussed before and I am gonna repeat myself. We need to understand the culture of the people we are fighting against in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Religion Islam came just thirteen or fourteen hundreds years ago but the Tribal Mindset is there for hundred of thousands of years. If one person of their tribe gets killed by some body, their hundreds of generations grow up to take revange of their Tribal memebr killed thousands of years ago.Islam has changed their affiliation from Tribal to Religious but their way of conducting war business is same.If we have not been attacked yet,it's not Bush's success. They are very patient people when it comes to animosity. The way this war is going,it seems like they are waiting for us to be Militarily and Finanacially bankrupt before they attack us again.
Our National Debt has reached close to $9 trillions, our National Guard is serving as an International Guard and Katrina has shown that how good we are in dealing with domestic disaster.

How long is it going to take for our government to find out that you cannot deal with a bunch of heatherns as in Iraq? Thousands demonstrated against our gov. for arresting or holding a son of some diplomat in Iraq but they don't mind setting off car bombs in huge crowds to kill anyone there no matter what clan they belong to. Human life means nothing to these heatherns. Why doesn't our government hold up in the green zone and drop leaflets to the masses that tell everyone to go ahead and kill as many as they want to, eventually there will be fewer to finally deal with. Our troops won't be harmed this way and the idiot iraqies will finally get to do what they want to do or the so called iraqie government can do as they please.

"This administration has been arrogant, reckless and duplicitous in its conceptualization of the Iraq 'crisis...'" posted by sanityseeker. You are correct except for limiting those terms to their Iraq crisis, they apply to almost every area in the administration. They distort the world and make policies to fit that distorted world view. Where possible they twist the truth but blatantly lying is an accepted part of their regime. You seek sanity, but bush-cheney administration is the wrong place to find it. Delusion is the norm rather than the exception. They apply the label "patriotic" to irrational policies and accuse any who challenge their "reality" of being traitors, emboldening the enemy.

Overtly aligning with al Qaeda was impossible for the Perverts for a New American Century (PNAC) and bush-cheney, but they've advanced al Qaeda's goals while claiming they opposed them. If traitors secretly loyal to bin Laden, had infiltrated the American political process, they could NOT have helped him and al Qaeda more than bush-cheney have. Their delusions probably led to the irrational policies that benefited al Qaeda, but strictly in terms of results, they might as well have been shills for bin Laden.

I am not surprised about the 35 Iraqui's killed. I see it every day in my local news-paper. Men, women and children blown up, torchured, beheaded, gassed, kidnapped, mass executed...it's been in The Oregonian every day since the war started. So please, don't tell me Americans are unaware...we all know all too well what is happening. Most likely, tens or hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's have been killed or murdered since the war began. Nobody seems to know the precise or even an approximate number.
But it has been said, on the averge, 100 Iraqi's
are killed every day. Multiply that times 365 and you get 36,500 people killed a year X 4 years and you get 146,000 people. I happen to think its a lot more than this. I think it is 3 or 4 times more than what is reported. I believe, the number is more like 1/2 million + Iraqi's. Think about how many Rose Bowl Stadiums of people this is! It's a number so big it is impossible to imagine unless you see a 1/2 million person protest on TV...even then, it is inconceivable...

What bothers me the most, and I am speaking of those of you who support the war...how is it, that you think so little of their lives that you can continue this? Is YOUR life worth more than theirs is? This doesn't have anything to do with supporting terrorism by wanting the war to end...this has to do with YOUR value system. What would George Bush do if someone trucked 1/2 million dead people and piled them in front of the White House...do you think he would get the picture? Do you think America would? What would CBS News do if 1/2 million dead bodies showed up in Washington DC suddenly? Would they ban it on TV because it would be too horrendous to view? Men, women and children, just like you, only they live in Iraq. Sons and daughters, just like yours. Mothers, fathers and so forth. You know its going on, you just don't have the guts to face the fact its that bad.

How many more million innocent people need to get killed for the 2nd coming of Christ? Why Iraq invasion has not resulted in the 2nd coming of Christ but ended up making Islamic Radicalism so powerful, succesful and strong like it was never before? What do PET ROBERTSON and JOHN HAGEE say about the current Iraqi situation?

We are not fighting against a country or a Geo-political region but fighting against the most dangerous, richest(oil money)and determined enemy with a Tribal mindset unlike Japanese and Germans.
Those enemies of United States have screwed up the entire nation who had decided to take OIL in cheaper prices from ARABs and in return support their those enemies who were brought into Palestine after WWII to occupy the land of those PALESTINIANS by force who had nothing to do with the actions of HITLER.
Nobody has hurt United States more then those enemies of UNITED STATES who want to support the illegitimate and unjustified existance of Israel on the world map on the cost of American money,American lives and USA herself since Americans are GOD-NEGLECTED and NON-AMERICAN EUROPEAN INVADERS IN PALESTINE are GOD-CHOSEN,because AMERICA which is the best place in the world is an UNHOLY LAND whereas the occupied places in Palestine like TEL AVIV is a HOLY LAND,our constitution which separates CHURCH from STATE is UNHOLY whereas that BIBLE which discriminates against Americans by not promising them a single penny while promising NON-AMERICANS a land in the MIDDLE EAST is HOLY.

The thing is that Bush and his supporters don't see Iraqi's as human beings. Like those who owned slaves in the 1800's they think of them as sub-human. As not deserving the same consideration as good white people. It's the same way they look at Palestinians and Koreans. While this war certainly was not started because of racism (it was started for profit), there is an undeniable racism in concern for those that have died in it. The Bush administration doesn't care if those of their "class" die, even American ones. Only they and their small circle of the ruling elite are human to them.

The death of any civilian during a military conflict is tragic.

However, most civilian deaths during this war have been caused by terrorists, not coalition soldiers.

The Iraqi people have shown their enthusiasm for the democratic process during elections. Many risking death to cast their vote.

We must not allow Islamic extremists the opportunity to destroy what so many brave soldiers have fought for.

In the case of Iraq, they have been invaded by America, and its ridicuously named coalition of the willing, Iraq attacked no outside country in this war.
Yes they did attack Kuwait at another time, nor can you or anybody claim that Iraq fostered terrorism against America or any othe nation, this claim has been shown to be nothing but lies given by Bush and his money grubbing cronies.

Humans die in larger numbers in civil wars than any other form of warfare; look at the toll of our own civil war. Remember Rwanda? There are not just deaths, but some 2.5 million Iraqi refugees in Jordan, Syria, and other countries that can ill afford and have no desire to absorb them. We are not responsible for creating the ancient inter-sectarian and ethnic hatred that now fuels this conflict; that was the work of Sadaam%u2019s brutal regime and a millennia-old religious feud. We did spark the fire by invading Iraq, threw gasoline on it by failing to provide security, and catalyzed the violence by forming a largely Shia government bent on leaving the Sunni minority powerless and penniless. We toppled Iraq%u2019s Tito, and the fracture of this mideast Yugoslavia has begun, replete with little Milosevics all vying for power. Which one should we support? We cannot hope to close Pandora%u2019s Box, but we may be able to manage the inevitable subdivision of the Iraqi people in less genocidal way. Senator Biden%u2019s plan for creating a Dayton Accord like separation of the warring sects has the best hope of carrying this out. I wish more Congressmen, from all political walks, would get behind his plan and shove it down this Administration%u2019s throat. Can we afford to wait out this Presidency? How many more of our boys and girls will be lost between now and Jan 09? How many more Iraqis? How many Mohammad Attahs will we spawn?

You should look at the real religion that's mixed with politics, one of their main symbols is on the back of our dollar bill, it's called freemasonry and the mystery religions which include scientology and it controls everything from banking to big business, media & entertainment, to your local judges and politicians.

    CBS admits their pro-War bias!

Polls show Americans drastically underestimate the deaths of Iraqi civillians.

Gee, just like how half the Americans Believed the BIG LIE, that Saddam was involved in 9-11. This is the LIE that Cheney and Condi were relentlessly telling, and Cheney still clings to Sdadam had "some relationship with Al Quaeda". (Yeah, a relationship of mutual hate and distrust!)

Just like how Americans never heard the anti-war voices pre-Inavasion that knew Bush was LYING.

This latest poll simply is another example of CBS and corporate media BIAS in not reporting the whole story, sucking up to the political powerful and their corporate owners pro-war agenda.

More Americans have been killed by illegal aliens every year then there have been soldiers killed in Iraq. Isn't that funny, hypocrites/traitors/liberals?

More Americans are killed driving drunk too, but they dont go out to close down Budweiser, Coors or Jack.

Matter of fact, ever since 9-11, 6 years, more people have died every year from smoking cigarettes that have died from the start to the end of these middle eastern wars, and thier aftermath.

Yet, alchohol and cigarettes are sold in every store out there, every gas station, even Walgreens and CVS push the additive killers, and they are both pharmacies.

jiminoregon - Hope WaPost READ YOUR COMMENT - YES, WHAT would CONGRESS DO IF 500,000 IRAQI DEAD BODIES WERE "SHIPPED" TO WASH, DC - That's the point of this poorly presented article - AMERICANS DON'T REALIZE WHAT IRAQI HOSPITALS and MORGUES HAVE TO CONTEND WITH DAILY - How this whole war was allowed, MANY WERE AGAINST IT, all proves THAT NEWSMEN CAN'T REPORT TRUE SITUATION IN IRAQ! No wonder INSURGENTS ARE AIMING FOR THE US SOLDIER - Iraqi's DON'T SEE BUSH OR THE AVERAGE AMERICAN or WE WOULD BE THE TARGETS - BRING OUR SOLDIERS HOME! Bet there are LOTS OF MASS BURIALS FOR HISTORIANS TO "UNBURY" THANKS TO THIS IRAQI WAR - can't blame SADDAM FOR THIS!

    Few months after 9/11,a Police Station in Karachi Pakistan was attacked by a Parcel bomb sent in mail which had resulted in some of the Police Officers to loose their fingers.A terrorist group linked to Alqaeda named "LASHKAR-E-JHANGVI" had claimed responsiblity for the attack and issued a statement published in Pakistani Urdu language newspapers which said;
"We urge the Muslims living in United States to leave US because according to our information, next attack against United States has already been planned in which according to our estimate 3.5 to 4 million Americans will be killed".

Ignorant people like you are the ones who'd let United States burnt into flames one day.
First of all your comparision of American casualties in Iraq to the number of people dying in United States due to Alcohal is not right.
According to Pentagon, there are Four thousand attacks against our troops per week in Iraq which means atleast more then One hundred and fourty attacks per day. After looking at the sophistication of those attacks by an UNSEEN ENEMY,it's impossible that only one soldier dies in one of those attacks.Even if we assume that we are loosing only one soldier per attack, the total number of soldiers dying in Iraq per week is one thousand and per month is four thousands.
If anybody thinks that our govt and media are not hiding the truth, then check out that how many of those more then One hundred and fourty attacks today were reported in the news today.

After looking at the above mentioned link, anybody who had ever served in the military can appreciate that how difficult it is to fight agianst an UNSEEN ENEMY who doesn't wear Military Uniform, doesn't follow Geneva Convention and is ready to blow Him or her self upfor killing his enemies, who has made plans to trap Americans in Iraq and to fight against them decades ago, unlike Bush administration who have no plan except trust in GOD.
    Answering to those people who are comparing the deaths of US soldiers in Iraq to drunk driving related deaths in United States,I would say;
Those people we are loosing in Iraq are not normal Americans.they are our finest men and women in uniform.Their BASIC COMBAT TRAINING,ADVANCE INDIVIDUAL TRAINING,OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL TRAINING,etc make them different from rest of the Americans as they are our defenders and protectors.Atleast four thousands of them are dying in Iraq every month in an ill planned war,our National Guard troops are serving as International Guard,Katrina has exposed that how good we are in dealing with domestic disasters.OSAMA BEEN-FORGOTTEN is still at large,North Korea has built Nukes for Business reason.Does anybody realize, what direction our country is heading by Bush and Co.
