(CBS/AP)  Talks between U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, initially billed as a new U.S. push to restart peace efforts, ended Monday with little progress other than a commitment to meet again.

In a 90-second statement following the two-hour meeting, Rice said that the two sides exchanged views of the political future and agreed to hold another summit.

CBS News correspondent Robert Berger said expectations were low as Rice met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Rice said peace efforts were complicated after Abbas joined a Palestinian unity government with Hamas, a group that seeks Israel's destruction.

Neither Abbas nor Olmert joined Rice as she delivered her statement, and she left the room without taking questions from reporters. Israeli and Palestinian officials were not immediately available for comment.

Little progress was expected by the meeting, which was beset by U.S. and Israeli dissatisfaction with the Palestinian power-sharing deal. It got off to a lackluster start, with Rice, Abbas and Olmert clasping hands together and flashing polite smiles for the cameras in an unadorned hotel conference room.

The three met without any aides, except for Rice's Arabic interpreter, officials said. After about an hour, they moved to Rice's suite overlooking Jerusalem's Old City, continuing talks for another hour in a more comfortable setting.

The three leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the internationally backed "road map" peace plan and agreed that a solution to the conflict will not be "born of violence," Rice said.

"The president and prime minister agreed that they would meet together again soon. They reiterated their desire for American participation and leadership to overcome obstacles, rally regional and international support and move forward toward peace. In that vein, I expect to return to the region soon," Rice said after the meeting.

Olmert was to meet with members of his Kadima party later Monday to discuss the talks.

Rice reported no progress in restarting final-status talks, the ostensible purpose of the meeting when it was announced last month. Expectations for the talks plummeted last week after Abbas and the Islamic Hamas group, which controls the Palestinian parliament, agreed to a power-sharing deal that fell short of meeting international demands.

The international community has demanded that any Palestinian government recognize Israel, accept previous peace deals and renounce violence, but the coalition deal, forged earlier this month in Saudi Arabia, only pledges to "respect" past peace agreements.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the first third of Monday's meeting focused on the unity deal.

After 6 years of do nothing except bomb and kill she wants to talk. I can see how well that went over. The only way they will talk is for a new administration to be in charge. What a shame this one started out with so much hope and look at where they traveled. I hope that the next one will learn from the mistakes of this one.

Aww puh-leeze. You can't create peace with these muslim killers and the hebrews are too distrustful - rightfully so. It would be more productive to just let them go at it until the smoke clears. The palestinians would be wiped out and then the rest of the region would get the message loud and clear to back off.

You may have noticed the coming surge of American public opinion against using our military to promote the agenda of other Countries! American people are learning it is ok to disagree with a President who is friends of Saudi Arabia and who gives them special treatment on the world stage at the expense of American lives. For years no one would say anything against promoting the Israeli agenda for fear of being labeled an anti-Semitist but now America is learning it is also acceptable to disagree with Israeli promoters like AIPAC members, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and William Kristol of the Weekly Standard who would gladly sell thousands of American soldiers lives to promote Israeli interest! Now these same policies and neocons are pushing our soldiers toward another war in Iran. American military is made to protect American interest not fight proxy wars in the interest of other countries! American blood and treasure should be spent only in American interest! The Current Vice President of the United States felt the need to jump on a plane on a moments notice and fly to Saudi Arabia at the beckon call of the house of Saudi. He showed the world by his actions who his true masters were! As for the Rest of us Americans, The Statue of Liberty Stands in New York Harbor and is not Kneeling in the desert of the Middle East!

Strange enough, I find little comfort in the idea that the Statue of Liberty, which was a gift to us, would be denied any other peoples on earth. Selfish interests dictate that I keep what is mine and not share it, nor would it be to that same interest of my own self worth to spill a drop of blood for what you want.

But thats not even close to being a true American. When we forget what the Statue of Liberty stands for, and refuse to lift a finger to help any other to achieve that same liberty that we have been so gifted with by our forfathers, then we dont deserve it. The very principals that our freedom and liberty is based on demands that we share it, not horde it and guard it selfishly.

Yes, the blood of many of our children has been let upon the soils of many different nations, and only if we lose sight of the truth, and the justice that freedom and liberty brings, will we ever lose it.

Pwrslm,

Hitler was a Zionist who fully supported Israel.

Hitler helped David Gruen, aka "David Ben Gurion," and his gang of terrorists evade British immigration quotas. That's how they managed to invade Palestine and terrorize the indigenous people in the first place.

You are incorrect, Adolf Hitler is Israel's original founding father.

What do you mean "will lose it"? In case you didn't notice we have already LOST it Sparky! The right of the American People to have a Government OF the PEOPLE, By the PEOPLE and For the PEOPLE has been terminated by a slimy Southern Fascist who has the support of roughly 28% of the American People. He holds 20,000 of OUR troops hostage this morning to what HE, in his "Superior" views is the best direction for this nation. HE is going to kill them and the ONLY way WE the PEOPLE can reverse his decision to do just that can only happen IF we are willing to cut off funding to ALL the troops. THAT is the reality of what we have this morning in the FREE United States. That Freedom you spout about DOES NOT exist and it's time we either did something about it or accepted it. But lets all stop pretending that OUR freedoms are at risk... they are not because a Mentally Ill Southern Fascist has taken them away....

As long as Israel is surrounded by Muslim nations (which they will be) they will always be under attack because of what the Muslim's Quran teaches them. Watch and learn folks. Israel will not be defeated. Israel isn't the bad guy.

God Bless.

I do wish we could, somehow, get you losers in the Religious Reich to care a LITTLE about OUR troops and OUR freedom. I do wish you people would try to "give" the American People back the Right to, through their elected representatives, stop a war they choose not to fight. Why is it you folks love a dictator and hate the rest of us so much?

All American Israel firsters need to move to Israel and renounce their US citizenship.

Oh, that's right, only "Jews" (people who claim their mommy was a "Jew,") can become Israeli citizens as immigrants.

What's up with that deal, anyway? Aren't "Jewish" men "real" Jews? Or, are Jewish women so promiscuous they never know who the daddy might be? You know, DNA testing has been around for quite awhile, maybe Israelis should use modern technology so "Jewish" men could qualify as a "real" Jew under Israel's Basic Law.

BTW, isn't that racism when people are discriminated against based on genetics, or "race", factors beyond their control?

And, why do so many Israelis continue to hold dual citizenship? Don't they support their chosen "homeland" that so many have suffered and died so the land could be stolend for them?

Singinrick,

Israel is totally and completely irrelevant to me other than as a leech on US taxpayers' pocketbooks and a source for 90% of the violence and terrorism in the Middle East.

The majority of Israelis are atheists from the former Soviet Union and have nothing in common with the bible fairy tales about an imaginary "race" called "Hebrews." Hebrews & Arabs are the same "race."

Modern day Israel fulfills no biblical prophecies whatsoever. Most Israelis are not Jews of any kind.

American Israel firsters need to move to Israel and renounce their US citizenship. It is not possible to be equally loyal to both the US and Israel.

Zionists are anti-America by virtue of their support for a hostile foreign government.

That clearly demonstrates how subversive and anti-America Israel firsters really are.

Israel is a leech on US taxpayers and responsible for countless American deaths.

Zionism is anti-Americanism.

ROFMAO Since the FIRST Congress of this nation and constantly from there on this nation has held STRONG to the principle that we MUST have a seperation between church and state. ONLY when slime like James Dobson and Robertson wanted to form their OWN Party.. Well to take OVER the Republican Party, did we suddenly NOT have a seperation of Church and State!! ROFLMAO Now when John Kennedy was running for President and these Bigots were afraid a Catholic would run the country based on Catholic beliefs, well lets just say these SAME bigots were shouting Seperation of Church and State to the top of their lungs. Adolf Hitler, founding father of modern day Israel and Chief European Zionist:

"Zionism was supported by the German SS and Gestapo.[3] [4] [5] [6] Hitler himself personally supported Zionism.[7] [8] During the 1930%u2019s, in cooperation with the German authorities, Zionist groups organized a network of some 40 camps throughout Germany where prospective settlers were trained for their new lives in Palestine. As late as 1942 Zionists operated at least one of these officially authorized %u201CKibbutz%u201D training camps[9] over which flew the blue and white banner which would one day be adopted as the national flag of %u201CIsrael%u201D.[10]"

You mean quotes like:
"Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and private schools entirely supported by private contributions. KEEP THE CHURCH AND STATE SEPARATE. With these safeguards I believe the battles which created the Army of the Tennessee will not have been fought in vain". President U.S. Grant, Des Moines, IA, 1876.

Not much room there for argument Rich. Not much at all from someone who, I would suggest, knew a lot more about what our founders created than slime like Pat Robertson.

Singingrick,

Who cares what Muslims think?

I am a fifth generation Texan, born & raised Baptist (but got over it) and consider all torah, bible or koran thumping lunatics to be a menace to the civilized world.

But, that does not alter the fact Israel is the source for the majority of terrorism in the Middle East and world, a leech on US taxpayers, and has no legitimate right to exist as a "state" on land that belongs to people who had nothing to do with the "holocaust."

Those are facts that will not change regardless who states them or what his ideology/religion may be.

Israel firsters should all move to Israel. There are more "Jews" living outside Israel than those who live in Israel. The majority of "Jews" don't even support Israel or Zionism. So, why should anyone else?

Singinrick,

David Gruen (aka David Ben Gurion, founder of modern day Israel, international terrorist, nazi) was an atheist from Poland.

He was not a "Jew" of any kind and neither were his followers. Their occupation of Palestine did not fulfill any biblical prophecies because they are not related to "Jews."

Neither are the majority of Israelis.

Zionism is anti-Americanism.

S.rick,

No one is born a Jew, Christian or Muslim.

They are all religions that must be accepted by the adherent when he becomes of age to understand what he is agreeing to.

The majority of Israelis are atheists.

Their occupation of Palestine fulfills no biblical prophecies. I am no longer a Christian (Jew, Muslim) primarily because I was raised a Christian and actually read the bible more than once.

The bible/koran is one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on mankind.

The world will never know peace so long as any major group of people claims an ancient book of fairy tales is a deed to land for which they have not paid the lawful owners.

It's hard to find peace when you murder people and steal their lands. Or, support people who do.

Zionists are a far greater menace and threat to the civilized world than any other terrorist group, including al qaida.

S.rick,

You seem to read only what you want to read.

From my viewpoint, ALL Jews, Christians & Muslims should be sent to Mars so they can slaughter each other to their heart's content.

They are all equally threatening to the civilized world.

However, stating facts is stating facts and has nothing at all to do with anything other than the stated facts.

And, the fact is the Balfour Declaration (1917) was ill advised and its implementation is the primary reason the Middle East is in turmoil to this day. And the Balfour Declaration predated the "holocaust" by nearly forty years.

Which means Zionists were actively conspiring with the US, British, Germans & others to gain support for their hostile takeover of Palestinian land long before the "holocaust."

Zionists are a far greater menace than any other terrorist group, including al qaida.

And have been for over 100 years.

Fact.

Hezbollah is as much a terrorist group as the Likud party in Israel or Republican party in the US.

Bombing or rocketing civilians is terrorism regardless why or how it's done or who is doing the bombing.

The US, UK and Israeli militaries are far more violent terrorist organizations than any others, including al qaida.

How many 10's or 100's of thousands of civilians have they murdered over the past several years?

Or, are you one of those terrorist supporters who uses the words "collateral damage" and excuses terrorism by terrorist groups you support?

S.rick,

The blind hatred and bigotry demonstrated by the Jewish & Christian communities are ample evidence that Jews & Christians are as much a menace as any other bible or koran thumping lunatics.

If it were not for the bible, there would be no reason to blindly and stupidly support one of the most corrupt "states" on the planet. Israel is little more than a criminal enterprise and should not have been given statehood status.

According to the Jesus myth, Christians should be running their preachers (moneychangers) out of the churches (temples), but it is irrelevant to me what Christians do so long as they do not support shoveling US tax dollars to a hostile foreign power, such as Israel, or support sending US soldiers off to fight wars for other nations, such as Israel.

I'm not sure what you are trying to prove, however, since I've already agreed with you. It appears you are anxious to demonstrate how much you hate Muslims.

Which makes you no different than any other torah, bible or koran thumping lunatic.

Hard to imagine why any loyal American would support people who share your hate mongering views. Pat Robertson would be proud of you.

And, thanks for demonstrating the menace you pose to all civilized people everywhere.

Look up "terrorism" in the dictionary.

It means using fear to achieve a political purpose.

The US, UK & Israeli militaries are the most violent terrorist organizations on the planet.

You seem to have problems with facts that don't conform to your hateful, bigoted view of the world.

But, your hatred and bigotry does not alter the facts.

Hezbollah is a minor leagus (pee-wee league) player in the terrorist arean compared to the US, UK or Israel.

Pwrslim,

The GOP has been terrorizing the American people for the past five years. The "war on terror" is terrorism by the GOP directed at the American people.

The US & UK militaries have been violently terrorizing the Afghani people for about four or five years.

The US & UK militaries have been terrorizing the Iraqi people for about 15 years.

The Israeli military has been terrorizing Palestinians for over 50 years. Nearly 100 years if you count the actions by the Zionist terrorists before they began wearing IDF uniforms.

Obviously, you like to pick and choose what you call terrorism, but terrorism is using fear to attain a political objective. It is irrelevant in whom the fear is inspired so long as there is a political objective. Terrorism without a political objective is called plain old murder.

And, that's what militaries do by profession. They inspire fear to attain a political objective. Otherwise, they would be murderers rather than terrorists.

And no surprise either. This administration has no concept of diplomacy when it's outside of the realm of "Do it our we'll blow you up!". The only true diplomat they ever had was Powell and he finally got sick of being treated like the token he was and quit. No other nation, enemy or ally, will take our country seriously again until the idiots in the White House now are out of office. Their credibility is non-existent and they wouldn't know the truth if it bit them in the as*s.

The primary problem with AIPAC is that Israel is a foreign nation.

And, a politician who allows himself to be bought and sold by a foreign nation cannot be a loyal American. It isn't quite treason, but it certainly should be unlawful.

BTW, for those who have never been to Washington, it is nearly impossible to meet with your own representatives, especially Senators, much less other state's representatives.

As for the Rest of us Americans, The Statue of Liberty Stands in New York Harbor and is not Kneeling in the desert of the Middle East!

I challenge anyone to come up with something positive that Rice has actually accomplished for the benefit of the country that pays her salary as she continually jet-sets around the world.

dallison7; Miss Rice%u2019s credibility is suspect as she found no %u201CActionable intelligence%u201D in the August 2001, Pre-9/11 Threat Briefing titled Bin Laden planning to Attack inside United States using Passenger Aircraft! She also has no recollection of an offer of Cooperation and Peace presented to the State Department in 2003 by the Iranian Government. You would think she could do something but as with the rest of the Bush Administration she is inept and dangerously incompetent!

I totally agree. I was tossing a hook in for a neocon. I feel that everytime we can lure one of them into a discussion it helps the casual visitors to this site see the insanity of those who blindly follow the lead of this administration

In 1997, Fortune magazine asked Congressmen to rank the "25 most powerful" lobbying organizations in DC. In 2005, the National Journal did the same. Both times, AIPAC came in 2nd - ahead of, for instance, the AFL-CIO and the NRA

pwrslm-
You ask what country is the US presently "terrorizing"? Lets start with Iran...
The Iranians in reality have not done a thing to harm us. Yet, look what the misguided, warped US foreign policy has done to these people:
1) The US installed puppet Shah of Iran viciously brutalized the Iranians. The tyrant Shah hoarded the national wealth and lived it up while his secret police tortured the Iranians.
2) We should be very grateful that the Iranians in righteous anger did not kill the embassay hostages.
3) We stuck knives in the backs of the Iranians by supporting Saddam in the Iran/Iraq war. (Remember the picture of von Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam as Rummy supplied him with whatever WMD technology he had given him?
4) On top of this, the US goes out and causes eceonomic "embargoes" to be levied against the Iranians.
5) Bush/Cheney/Rice do nothing to alleviate the Iranian worries of the Israeli Jew nukes pointing out THEM, while saber rattling over the idea of Iranian nukes.
6) Note that 15 of the 19 hijackers were from "our friends" the Saudis; not Iranains.
7) The suicide car bombers in Iraq killing our troops are Sunnis Arabs' not Persian Shiites.
Want more?...
We should be "making nice" with the Iranians. In reality they ARE our friends. The Israelis and Saudis certainly are not.
p.s. S-Rick take your book of Jewish mythology/fairy tales and shove it where th sun doesn't shine. The Wizard of Oz has more credence.
