GOP Blast From The Past Polling Well

Newt Gingrich Could Be Well Situated To Woo Highly Prized Conservative Voters

Gingrich's rise to congressional leadership paralleled the Reagan Administration — a time when conservatives made their mark on GOP presidential nominees. Here he's shown at a rally for his signature "Contract for America" plan.  (CBS)

(CBS)  It’s official. This week, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani joined a growing field — including Arizona Senator John McCain — seeking the Republican Party nomination for president.

And a CBS news poll shows Giuliani with a wide lead. In a head-to-head race with McCain, Republicans favor Giuliani by nearly a 2 to 1 margin with Giuliani getting 50 percent to McCain’s 29 percent.

Most surprising, Giuliani also solidly beats McCain among conservatives.

“There's this really strong image of Giuliani in that first 24 hours in terms of 9/11,” says David Winston, a Republican pollster.

Winston thinks Giuliani’s performance in that crisis may overcome conservative opposition to his moderate positions on issues such as gun control and abortion.

But Giuliani shouldn't count on support from conservatives, such as Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group.

“I think he's going to have absolutely no chance,” says Perkins. “There are certain threshold issues of being pro-life and supporting the sanctity of human life, then you're not going to get the support of social conservatives.”

Conservatives also have doubts about McCain for his moderate positions on immigration and gun control. And they question Romney’s commitment to the anti-abortion cause.

While most of the media spotlight on the GOP has focused on McCain, Giuliani and Romney, there's a face from the GOP's glory days who may appeal to even more social conservatives: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich says it's too early to announce. But, when his name is added to polls, he immediately becomes a strong contender.

“He's finishing in third place, and when you look at some specific states, he actually finishes second in many of those states,” says Winston.

Gingrich's rise to congressional leadership paralleled the Reagan Administration — a time when conservatives made their mark on GOP presidential nominees. They're not about to quit in 2008.

It's truly disturbing at how much the Republican candidates are willing to exploit 9/11, stepping on the deaths of thousands of Americans to boost their campaigns.
It's as if that's Republicans planned it that way. and you don't have to believe in conspiracies too much to see the possible connection.

Giuliani is way to liberal on the social issues for the right wing nazis to stomach and he will not get the nomination. And McCain has kissed Bush's a s s for so long that he's lost any credibility he may have once have had as a "maverick."

The GOP is dead in the water for 2008.

American politics goes in cycles. The pendulum swung to the left in the 60's, peaking in the '70s (Civil rights, Vietnam, Watergate). It swung to the right in the '80s (Reagan) and then sort of centered in the '90s after peaking to the left in '94 (Clinton/Republican congress). Since 2001, we have been in the far right ditch. Now we are going to take a shift to the left before we settle in the middle again sometime in the next decade.

A Democrat will be elected president in 2008. And then you conservatives will get too greedy again and the pendulum will start its swing back to the right.

And so it goes...

Republicans like Tony Perkins like keeping the issue of abortion alive because they know it brings them votes & campaign money especially from misguided conservatives.
Democrats like keeping the issue alive because it brings them votes & money from the opposite group of people.
But the truth about the GOP is that abortion is an issue that interests them only so far as it helps them politically.
In the past 38 years Republicans have held the presidency for 26 of those years. They have had ample opportunity to aggressively overturn Roe vs Wade if it were their intention to do so. But of all the Supreme Court judges nominated by Republican presidents, all have been hard-core capitalists, (interested in protecting the rich & powerful), not moralists (who might be interested in working against Roe vs Wade.) Even Bork was more of a capitalist & there is no indication that he would have worked aggressively toward overturning the law.
If Republicans had wanted the law changed, it would have happened 30 years ago. It doesn't take the government 40 years to change a law if they are serious about changing it. Republicans (& Democrats) are content with the abortion issue being just as it is.

I have my mind made up to vote Democrat. I prefer Hillary, but would be willing to vote for whoever wins the nomination in the Democratic Party. Republicans have made too much harm to our country. That said, if it is the Republican Party the one to win in next presidential election, then I would prefer Giuliani to be President. Not that he is good, it is just that nothing would be as bad as McCain if we want the country to re-start and get going again. McCain is merely an unprincipled opportunist. With Giuliani, you know where he stands and that he is for our nation. With McCain the only thing you know for sure is that he is for McCain.

Newt Gingrich is far from the paragon of virtue. Sure, no politician really is, but at least most of the Democrats are parading around as being the shining stars of moral values!!!

If Newt is all the Conservatives have left in terms of popularity status, then you Conservatives REALLY need to come to God more than ever!

9/11/01 solidified Republican control for two major election cycles. Like you said, the GOP still uses 9/11/01 for their campaigns.

If it wasn't a conspiracy, then 9/11 was the most convenient event for Conservative/Neo-Conservative Republicans in U.S. history!

Americans will elect a Republican President in 2008. With three strong moderates....McCain, Romney, and Rudy the GOP has three candidates of which any of the three would defeat the liberal candidates currently running.

The GOP party is moving to the center........the DNC is staying to the left in this predominately religous conservative nation of ours.....

........oh yeah and if Congress doesn't get off this "politicizing" of the war against terror and get some legislation passed that fixes some of the problems that we face.........then they will be voted out in 08........

perception5: You are day dreaming again if you think the GOP is moving toward the middle! Guilini doesn't have a chance with the religious freaks! McCain and Romney neither one can make up their mind what they are for or against! The GOP doesn't have the backbone to alienate a large portion of their voting block! A lot of us moderates left in the 80's and have never once looked back as they have gotten more and more radical! I won't vote for them again until they lose the religion, war mongers and the hard core nut cases! That includes the moderates!

Let him run, the neo.cons may get a little misty eye for the GOP good ol' days, but this guy has so much baggage he'd give King Kong dressed as a bell hop a hernia!! We really don't need any more comic relief in the race. LOL

Main Entry: neo.con (ser.va.tive)
Pronunciation: 'nE-O-k&n
Function: noun or adjective
1 a : of or relating to a person or strategy of pretending
to follow traditional conservatism with little or no true interest
in such philosophy simply for personal, political or economic gain.

Prescott Bush (grandaddy): Had assets frozen for giving aid to the enemy (Hitler) during WWII

George HW Bush (daddy): Fomed the 'Carlyle Group' inpartnership with the Bin Laden family. The Carlyle Group has a history of questionable activities for four decades.

Neil Bush (brother): Silverado Savings and Loan. Raked off million$ for himself while the taxpayers bailed Silverado out to the tune of billion$

George W. Bush (decider): LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND TO CONGRESS TO LEAD OUR NATION INTO AN UNJUST AND ILLEAGLE WAR WITH IRAQ FOR OIL PROFITS AND TO LOOT THE US TREASURY.

My prayer for Newt: Please, Lord, let Newt get the Republican nomination. I humbly ask this, Lord, because Newt is the personification of the Republican Party itself. He is whiny, self-absorbed, and condescending. He is also preachy, arrogant, and perhaps the ultimate Know-it-All. Even better, he doesn't try to hide any of these qualities. This is who Republicans really are, God, and I pray that you may reveal this to your people once and for all. Amen.

All of you write sooo much c*r*a*p*o*l*a. You can not put your self in the shoes of a poor man. Nor can you see the soon to be poor man squeezed by his poor decisions of his adjustable rate mortgage and the terrible housing market. Nor can you see the plight of those being squeezed by the predatory banker who, at will, bait the average consumer with low rates only to send them some hidden piece of, what looks like junk mail "opt out" statement which the consumer probably does not see and probably does not understand. Furthermore, few consumers know enough about having to write letters to merchants to dispute a charge (in triplicate) BEFORE contacting the credit card company.
So what do these candidates offer to the average Joe? Absolutely nothing. It was Paul Volcker who tried to put some safeguards into place and without his leadership the country would truly be a gangster driven banker's paradise. However, as it stands, these candidates are just stooges of the most evil empire on the face of the Earth. There is no Luke Skywalker in sight.

I think the problem with a lot of so called "conservatives", is they have no idea what the truth is or what a conservative is.

These repugnant Republicans keep insisting that terrorism and Iraq are the same thing. The truth is, there were no terrorists of note in Iraq before we invaded and destroyed their country. The war is a lie that they all want to believe in because they simply cannot accept the fact that they are wrong and the Dems were right.

Contrary to preceptions5's perception, the Republicans are still the radical right and are still drinking Bush's cool aid. And, I truly believe that it has nothing to do with what some of them feel to be right or wrong, but is just politics... not wanting to appear to have been wrong in the first place.

They treat the American people like we're a bunch of morons and sow their hate with bitter criticism of everything that's not lock stepping to their tune is only making it worse for them.

I think their biggest mistake is equating not supporting this disastrous war with not supporting our troops. It is entirely possible to support our troops while not supporting our incompetent leaders... and that's what this is all about. The Republicans have shown themselves to be unworthy... and now they must atone for their lack of judgment. And, pinning their hopes on a criminal like Gingrich is a stark testimony to their continued insanity.

newt Gingrich has one edearing quality; He is always wrong.

Case in point.
He wants to restrict everyones's Constitutional given right to privacy and free speech. He stated "the rules have changed" Excuse me, who changed the rules??. In a recent speech he stated that we need to be much more compliant to the White House vision that all Americans march in formation to whatever El Grande Georgio proclaims.

Sorry dude.

We true Americans get really pissed when soomeone says we should just shut up and obey.

That's WW2 Germany. We will not tolerate that here.

Navy Sailors as Infantrymen
There are right now Navy Seamen being used in the role of Combat Infantrymen in Iraq because the Marines and Army are stretched so thin. These Seamen get a rush thru Small Unit training program and are given a rifle and are integrated into combat arms maneuver units.

You may have noticed the coming surge of American public opinion against using our military to promote the agenda of other Countries! American people are learning it is ok to disagree with a President who is friends of Saudi Arabia and who gives them special treatment on the world stage at the expense of American lives. For years no one would say anything against promoting the Israeli agenda for fear of being labeled an anti-Semitist but now America is learning it is also acceptable to disagree with Israeli promoters like AIPAC members, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and William Kristol of the Weekly Standard who would gladly sell thousands of American soldiers lives to promote Israeli interest! Now these same policies and neocons are pushing our soldiers toward another war in Iran. American military is made to protect American interest not fight proxy wars in the interest of other countries! American blood and treasure should be spent only in American interest! The Current Vice President of the United States felt the need to jump on a plane on a moments notice and fly to Saudi Arabia at the beckon call of the house of Saudi. He showed the world by his actions who his true masters were! As for the Rest of us Americans, The Statue of Liberty Stands in New York Harbor and is not Kneeling in the desert of the Middle East!

I think the GOP should nominate Satan, just to test I theory of mine. I bet that most Republicans would vote for him over the Democrat.
With VERY few exceptions, it doesn't matter whom they nominate - they are bound to be short-sighted, self-centered, stingy, mean-spirited, elitist crooks who will p!$$ on our collective heads and smile while they tell us it's raining.

Well lets just hope that Micheal Savage runs. He has made the comment that he will put in for the race. Not sure though if he is serious. However, he would make a great contribution to the debates. He is one of few people with power and say that believes in what a majority of American's do. Border, Language, and Culture which as we all know is under attack from the left and our enemies within and outside the US. So lets hope he runs and wins. Maybe then we can have our country back. As of now there is no one willing to save America, only those willing to weaken it a little at a time. Only difference is the Democrat Party wants America as a 3rd World Country more quickly. Republicans are just being weak letting it happen. So just pray for a true conservative who will stand up for us like Michael Savage.
