(CBS/AP)  Serial numbers and markings on explosives used in Iraq provide "pretty good" evidence that Iranians are providing either weapons or technology for militants there, Defense Secretary Robert Gates asserted Friday.

Gates' comments made official the Iran weapons connection first reported by CBS News at the end of January, when officials told national security correspondent David Martin that serial numbers on parts used to make advanced explosive devices, powerful enough to breach the armor on an American tank, had been traced directly back to Iran.

The officials also told Martin rocket-propelled grenade launchers and assault rifles found in Iraq had Iranian factory markings.

Offering some of the first public details of evidence the military has collected, Gates said, "I think there's some serial numbers, there may be some markings on some of the projectile fragments that we found," that point to Iran.

At the same time, however, he said he was somewhat surprised that recent raids by coalition and Iraqi forces in Iraq swept up some Iranians.

Just last week, Gates said that U.S. military officers in Baghdad were planning to brief reporters on what is known about Iranian involvement in Iraq but that he and other senior administration officials had intervened to delay the briefing in order to assure that the information provided was accurate.

Speaking to reporters at a defense ministers' conference in Seville, Spain, Gates said Friday, "I don't think there was surprise that the Iranians were actually involved, I think there was surprise we actually picked up some."

He and other U.S. officials have said for some time that Iranians, and possibly the government of Iran, have been providing weapons technology, and possibly some explosives to Iraqi insurgents.

But, Bernie Kaussler, an associate fellow at the University of St. Andrews' Institute for Iranian Studies, tells CBSNews.com that he's not convinced top Iranian officials are involved in weapons smuggling.

"There are so many players in Iranian politics, many times the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. That might well be the case," he explains. "It is possible that there are a few hotheads supplying weapons and support without the central government knowing."

The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have been a leading killer of U.S. forces in Iraq, where more than 3,000 servicemen and women have died in the nearly four-year-old war.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has denied his government is supporting Iraq's militias with money or weapons.

The IEDs have been a leading killer of U.S. forces in Iraq, where more than 3,000 servicemen and women have died in the nearly four-year-old war.

Gates, who is attending his first NATO defense ministers meeting, said Iran is "very much involved in providing either the technology or the weapons themselves for these explosively formed projectiles. Now they don't represent a big percentage of the IED attacks but they're extremely lethal."

Gates said the raids combined with the movement of an additional U.S. aircraft carrier into the Persian Gulf have created a stir, but said the Bush administration has no intention of attacking Iran.

In other developments:

  • An al Qaeda-linked insurgent group posted a Web video Friday showing what it said was the downing of a U.S. military helicopter earlier this week. Seven Americans were killed in the crash. The U.S. military has said it did not believe the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter was shot down in the crash Wednesday northwest of Baghdad. U.S. military officials said early indications were that the craft's loss was due to mechanical failure.

  • U.S. helicopters mistakenly killed at least five Kurdish troops Friday in a friendly fire incident against forces Washington hopes to partner with to secure Iraq, U.S. and Iraqi officials said. The deaths occurred in eastern Mosul at about midnight. The U.S. military said the airstrike was targeting al Qaeda fighters, but later issued an apology, saying the five men killed had been identified as Kurdish police. Kurdish officials put the casualty toll at eight killed and six wounded

  • The military also said three U.S. soldiers died Thursday in fighting in Anbar province, an insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, bringing the total number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq this month to 33. The deaths raised to at least 3,117 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

  • Police said gunmen dressed in Iraqi army uniforms swept into a village south of Baghdad, kidnapping 13 civilians and killing at least 11 of them. The attack occurred in Imam, a predominantly Shiite village about 47 miles south of the Iraqi capital. Police later found 11 bodies with gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and they were believed to be those who had been kidnapped, police and the Iraqi army said.

  • A roadside bomb killed one British soldier and wounded three others in southern Iraq on Friday, the British military said. The attack occurred at an intersection about 3 miles southeast of Basra, according to a spokeswoman for British forces in Iraq. The latest casualties bring to 101 the number of British military deaths attributed to hostile action since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to Britain's Ministry of Defense.

  • The Iraqis want to put him on trial for allegedly supporting terrorists, but an American who once served in the Minnesota National Guard won't be facing those judges for now. A federal appeals court in Washington ruled that Shawqi Omar, a citizen of both Jordan and the U.S., has a right to argue for his release before a U.S. court. For the last two years he's been held at a prison in southern Iraq without formal charges and, his family says, without access to counsel.

I sincerely hope no American voter is STUPID enough to fall for any more of this administration's lies.

Gates needs to concern himself with how he is going to get our troops out of Iraq and stop worrying about manufacturing phony "intelligence" for the war criminals in the White House.

It is way past time to impeach and indict George Bush for his multiple crimes, including murder.

Yeah, and I bet you can serial numbers for weapons made in virtually every country that makes weapons in Iraq. This is a real find.

I wonder if Gates can "find" the 8-billion in cash that disappeared while he was at it. That could buy a few weapons I suppose.

The CIA has fallen down or been pushed down and can't get up. It's now just another agency filled with poltiical hacks thanks to the Bush neocons. Yet the former head of the agency receives the USA's highest civilian medal for his wonderful work leading up to Iraq and pre-911 intelligence failures. A completely morally corrupt administrations that has killed thousands and thousands of people based on "flawed" intelligence. The biggest flaw in intelligence is at the top.

    It's a slam dunk!

Perfect timing - this comes out on the same day that we get "official" confirmation that the Iraqi pre-war "evidence" was hyped by the OSP.

Note how the "liberal media" repeats the official US talking points here: seemlessly linking the news about Iran "supporting the insurgency" to American deaths in Iraq - even though the overwhelming majority of these deaths occur in Sunni areas and have nothing whatsoever to do with the Shiites.

And this, despite the fact that Iran supports the groups that make up the Iraqi government. This is a breakdown of the groups that formed the United Iraqi Alliance, the ruling GOVERNMENT of Iraq:

    SCIRI: 23% (29)
    Sadrist: 22% (28)
    Independents: 22% (28)
    Dawa Party: 20% (26)
    Fadhila Party: 13% (17)

At least 65% are made up of groups that receive(d) aid from Iran (either back when Saddam was in power and/or today). So, you'd have to believe that Iran is supplying weapons to it's own enemies. And I've got a bridge to sell you.

But the disaster in Iraq has got to be SOMEONE'S fault, and since the fake conservatives never take responsibility for their own actions, it might as well be Irans.

What we will see now that the story has broken about the 'misleading intelligence' is a rush to war with Iran. The administration will, no doubt, fast forward their bogus scheme to start that war.

If there was ever a time for concerned citizens to write their congressman and voice their concerns, it is now!!

Need Mr Gates be apprised of the fact that AMERICAN WEAPONS are to be found in virtually all WARRING countries on Earth? Does this fact then PROVE that the USA is ACTIVELY AIDING AND ABETING IN TERRORIST ACTIVITIES IN THOSE COUNTRIES WHERE AMERICAN WEAPONRY ARE FOUND?
It is reported that about a MILLION AMERICAN MADE CLUSTER BOMBS REMAIN AFTER THE ISRAELI BOMBING OF LEBANON, Mr Gates, and as Sec Def, you bare responsibility, shared of course, with the rest of the Bush administration you now serve, FOR THOSE OUTLAW WEAPONS BEING WHERE THEY NOW ARE, WHICH IS, BY THE WAY, A WAR CRIME, AND ALSO A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY, NO MATTER WHAT THE FRAT BRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS!

What is the word tha the white house press guy likes to use for such reasoning?

"Disingenuous", I believe is the word that "Snow-job" Tony likes to use in such cases, is it not? If so, then it is appropriate to conclude that Mr Gates is AGAIN BEING "DISINGENUOUS"!

The US Intelligence Community is the best in the world by far. After the Cold War ended, there were severe budget cuts to the Intelligence Community. This was one of the many causes for the intelligence failure that led to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. However, after that, there were big reforms to the Intelligence Community and their funding was increased. Any "intelligence failures" are because the policy makers (who don't work for the Intelligence Community by the way) can choose to ignore Intelligence reports if it does not fit with what they want to do. So, blaming the Intelligence Community for the mistakes of a policy maker shows your ignorance.

So you think that the intelligence that you hear about is the same as the intelligence reports that the president gets? After this intelligence has been filtered through the president where he has picked out the pieces that he likes and then by the media where they pick out the pieces that they like. You are getting maybe 5% of the original intelligence report.

The insurgents buy or steal weapons from anyone they can. I'll bet a month's salary that they have found Russian, Chinese, American, Yugoslavian, Bulgarian, You-name-it-arian weapons as well as Iraqi and Irainian weapons. The place is awash in weapons and explosives from all over the world.

This is more twisted intelligence and cherrypicking. Don't fall for it.

"pretty good" evidence?? And we are suppose to believe what?

How dare Gates stand up there and claim "pretty good" evidence that Iran is supplying weapons. Does Bush and co think we are STUPID?? This is exactly the same line of B.S. they took in Iraq and it all turned out to be false. Only today there is a story that the Pentagon manipulated prewar intelligence to prop up the story about Iraq and 9-11.

This is nothing but lies, trying to convince the American people that Iran needs to be attacked. The only difference between now and then is the word "pretty good". They have no evidence Iran in doing anything, just like they had no evidence Saddam had WMD or was an ally of OBL.
I don't believe a word of it and have nothing but contempt for Gates.

Founded in 1953 by Isaiah L. "Si" Kenen, AIPAC's original name was the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs. According to UCLA political science professor and author, Steven Spiegel, "the tension between the Eisenhower administration and Israeli supporters was so acute that there were rumors (unfounded as it turned out) that the administration would investigate the American Zionist Council. Therefore, an independent lobbying committee was formed, which years later was renamed [AIPAC]." [SPIEGEL, p. 52].[citation needed] Today, AIPAC has over 100,000 members.[1]
AIPAC's stated purpose is to lobby the Congress of the United States on issues and legislation "to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship is strong so that both countries can work together" to meet the challenges of "stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, fighting terrorism and achieving peace".[2] It regularly meets with members of Congress and holds events where it can share its views, and provide analysis of voting records of U.S. federal representatives and senators with regard to support of Israel. The New York Times described AIPAC on July 6, 1987 as "a major force in shaping United States policy in the Middle East."

ISLAM / PERFECT EXAMPLE OF FASCISM!!!
pisslam is intent on killing or enslaving all nonMUDs......

The most notable characteristic of a fascist country is the separation and persecution or denial of equality to a specific segment of the population based upon superficial qualities or belief systems.
Simply stated, a fascist government always has one class of citizens that is considered superior (good) to another (bad) based upon race, creed or origin. It is possible to be both a republic and a fascist state. The preferred class lives in a republic while the oppressed class lives in a fascist state.

Our defense industry will sell all the weapons they make, to anybody and any country (including Iran). It is what their business is. The more war there is, the more profitable their business. Only King George's subjects don't get it.

For 6 long years I have sat here and said surely George Bush isn't THAT stupid... I've sat here and said surely he won't fall for that. EVERY time he has surprised. You NEVER and I do mean NEVER let someone prod you into a war... When you are as Incompetent as Bush and so easy to read as Bush it almost seems unfair. I know it's rough but sooner or later we must face it. When it comes to "winning hearts and minds" we are getting a whippin the likes of which this world has NEVER seen. Since the MAIN weapon of Terrorist is HATE and since Bush plays right into the hands of those who want others to HATE us... he's just getting his pants kicked off. In the future beside the word LOSER in the dictionary they will have a picture of George Bush.

I love how you fascist are always telling us how brave you are. Course you, unlike me, have never taken up an arm and walked into battle. How do I know? Because anyone who has heard the scream of another American at his side would NEVER attack his neighbor and fellow citizen for not supporting someone SO incompetent and such a LIAR as George Bush. You sir deserve what you are getting... by the way ALL the war's we have won? Liberal's won them! All the rights you have? Liberals created them. But hey American you have to HATE Liberals!! ROFLMAO I've got a dog smarter than you Sparky! Combat Vet, USMC, Chu Lai, RVN, 1968
