NASA Astronaut Faces Attempted Murder Charges In Plot Against Romantic Rival

(CBS/AP)  Defense attorney Donald Lykkebak said Tuesday that he believes the attempted murder charge was filed because police were unhappy Nowak would be released on bail.

"I guess they didn't like the ruling in court this morning, did they? You think they would have done it if she was still in jail?" he said.

According to authorities, Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Oefelein, and when she found out Shipman was flying to Orlando from Houston, she decided to confront her early Monday, according to the arrest affidavit.

Nowak raced from Houston to Orlando wearing diapers in the car so she wouldn't have to stop to go to the bathroom, authorities said. Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.

Dressed in a wig and a trench coat, she waited for Shipman's plane to land and then boarded the same airport shuttle bus Shipman took to get to her car, police said. Shipman told police she noticed someone following her, hurried inside the car and locked the doors, according to the arrest affidavit.

Nowak rapped on the window, tried to open the car door and asked for a ride. Shipman refused but rolled down the car window a few inches when Nowak started crying, the statement said. Nowak then sprayed a chemical into Shipman's car, the affidavit said. Shipman drove to the parking lot booth and police were called.

An officer reported following Nowak and watching her throw away a bag containing the wig and BB gun. Police also found a steel mallet, a 4-inch folding knife, rubber tubing, $600 and garbage bags inside a bag Nowak was carrying when she was arrested, authorities said.

Oefelein and Shipman, who worked at Patrick Air Force Base near the Kennedy Space Center, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

NASA spokesman James Hartsfield in Houston said that, as of Monday, Nowak's status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged. "What will happen beyond that, I will not speculate," he said. He said there were no rules against fraternizing among astronauts.

NASA has programs to encourage astronauts and others to seek help for problems without a stigma being attached to it, CBS News space consultant Bill Harwood reports.

According to NASA's official biography, Nowak is a Naval Academy graduate who has a master's degree in aeronautical engineering. She has a teenage son and younger twin girls.

Oefelein has two children and began his aviation career as a teenager flying floatplanes in Alaska, according to a NASA biography. He studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and later earned a master's degree in aviation systems at the University of Tennessee Space Institute. He has been an astronaut since 1998.

She did risk her life for her country, first see if she can get straightened out. If not, and she simply is a murderer wannabe then send her to prison.

Can't hurt to try to help her, can it? Maybe medications can help.

I agree with that, but other people that do crazy *** like this who are insane also are thrown in prison all the time, I don't think she should be treated special just because she was an astronaut... if you disagree with them throwing nuts in jail then you should disagree about them doing it with all those other nuts they throw in jail... It's like some americans even think all these federal employees, politicians and all of them that suck up our tax money actually deserve special treatment when they screw up. It's a really bad deal and leads to lots of people who think they don't have to be accountable for their actions.

It does indicate an obsession, but it appears she is a drug addict suffering from far worse mental problems than an obsession.

Military pilots are given speed by the US government and she exhibited the traits exhibited by many speed freaks.

Life is all about choices.

Seems Lisa made the wrong choice.. I doubt this is just a heat-of-the-moment incident. This is premeditated, it is something that must have consumed her very being to go and risk everything she's gained. Spraying a chemical at someone else for revenge? All rationality and mental discipline seems to have flown out the window for the Navy Captain. This is at the very least a psychotic episode.

Florida Police culture requires craziness in their police reports to inflate the probability of arrest, especially in domestic violence issues. They routinely fall for any crazy and even false stories told by especially attractive women. Lisa Nowak needs a good lawyer. The level of police funding from the state for every city in Florida depends on the conviction rate on the different categories of charges. It is a numbers game. Police in Florida don't even have to listen to both sides before making an arrest. Any attractive woman in Florida can call the police, make a false police report, show any cut or bruise and claim it was caused by their assailant, and the police will make an arrest without bond. The integrity of a Florida Police officer is only as good as their education, and most Florida police officers don't have much education.
