(AP)  The decision to become pregnant and raise a child with her female partner was not political, Mary Cheney, a daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, told a Barnard College audience.

"This is a baby," Cheney said Wednesday at a forum sponsored by Glamour magazine. "This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child."

Cheney, 37, announced in December that she and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, were starting a family. She did not say how the child was conceived. The baby is due in the spring and will be the vice president's sixth grandchild.

Dick Cheney became testy last week when CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked him what he thought of conservatives who are critical of his daughter's pregnancy. Cheney told Blitzer he was "over the line."

In a brief interview with The New York Times after Wednesday's panel, Mary Cheney said she agreed that Blitzer had crossed a line. "He was trying to get a rise out of my father," she said.

Glamour editor Cindi Leive asked Cheney during the panel discussion if she had anything to say to conservatives such as James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, who have criticized her pregnancy, asserting that children should be raised by heterosexual married couples.

She responded, "Every piece of remotely responsible research that has been done in the last 20 years on this issue has shown there is no difference between children who are raised by same-sex parents and children who are raised by opposite-sex parents. What matters is that children are being raised in a stable, loving environment."

Cheney was an aide to her father during the 2004 campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL.

She is the author of "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," published last year.

Pakaal-

Where is the hyprocrisy? Mary Cheney's decisions are just that-her decisions. She and her father are both entitled to their own point of view, even if they differ. That's what this country is all about, isn't it? Or are you passing judgement on both of them? In case you wanted to rethink your, "larf," it is entirely reasonable for her to say that having a child isn't a political decision. Millions of people are born every day-do you consider them props? And, yes, Wolf Blitzer-you were over the line. The Vice President can still love his daughter, even if he disagrees with her, and still be the Vice President, and a Republican, all at the same time.

Not political? What a larf. Sorry to sound callous, but seriously Mary Cheney I do wish you and your baby happiness, but your dad is a very influential person in the GOP, the party that has torn apart people's lives, denied them equal benefits, says that being gay or lesbian is "against God" etc.

You may recall your dad's partner George Bush affirming more than once that marriage is between a man and a woman, and nothing else. So yeah, sorry, most people are not going to let this hypocrisy stroll by, no matter what right you think you have to be left out of the public scrutiny.

Agnim, we're all sorry you were picked on in the playground when you were a child, but for goodness sakes, that was last year. Get over it, get some therapy for your anger issues, & get a life.

Well, I guess that is your life: being angry & nasty all the time. Sigh. So sad.

"Ha ha! Don't make us laugh."

Well, someone should. Nothing YOU write is clever or funny, Agnim.

You blather and blather and never respond to any points made by anyone with anything except gutter language and profanity.

Please, go take a nap.

" Mary Cheney is a successful businesswoman, highly competent, and undeserving of your bigoted insults.

Ha ha!
Don't make us laugh.

Do you know how many so-called 'competent business people are rotting in jail, or should be rotting in jail?

FYI, Any low life can have the ONE talent of being a competent business person.
And this deviant ***** from the dysfunctional family is proving that.

Instead of being overly concerned about a mentally mixed pervert, who is way too eager to promote her diseased behavior to the nation's children, we should be more concerned when these deviants in 'high places' leave their closets to NEGATIVELY IMPACT THE MINDS OF YOUNG AMERICANS who are desperate for a correct guidance in life!

Agnim-

You're certainly entitled to your opinions, and the expression of them. I have to say, though, in response to your attack, that you are far from being an authority on who is or who is not mentally mixed up, perverted and/or **** deviant. Mary Cheney is a successful businesswoman, highly competent, and undeserving of your bigoted insults.

If you're going to discuss this issue, you could at least be decent. If Mary Cheney wasn't the daughter of a public figure, this probably wouldn't have even made the local news. If you disagree with her lifestyle, for whatever reason, that is your problem. You don't have to live in her house. If you are concerned about whether someone who lives her lifestyle is capable of raising a child, you are discounting her capacity to be a parent on the basis of her sexual orientation. The two issues are logically separate, and criticism without knowledge isn't justified. If you're disagreeing based on what the Bible says, you could start by, "removing the plank from your own eye." Folks, she hasn't done anything wrong, and this is a free country. Why is it that this free country has always had such a problem with equality and civil rights? In this country, everyone has the self evident right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Agnim,
Look in the mirror. Read your post. Substitute your name for all the entities you mention. Then, stop posting. You are very offensive and make your ignorance way too obvious.

I just left the CNN website. They neglected to include this quote from Mary Cheney:

In a brief interview with The New York Times after Wednesday's panel, Mary Cheney said she agreed that Blitzer had crossed a line. "He was trying to get a rise out of my father," she said

If FOX did that they would be crucified.

Has anyone seen the "congresswoman quits congressional hispanic caucus" in the mainstream media? The only website I can find it on is Drudge. CBS, NBC and ABC have reported nothing.
Could you imagine if a Republican called another congresswoman a *** what the outcry would be?!

It is absolutely none of my business what Cheney's daughter sucks on or licks. If it's a moral issue, it's her moral issue, not mine. As the proud grandfather of two adopted little girls I do have a right to express an opinion on the selfishness of all this. Anyone who longs to have a family and the joy of a child, but cannot conceive, for whatever reason, should adopt. I believe anyone requesting artificial insemination should be required by law to visit the adoption centers and see the children without parents. Also, all of you right wingnuts who call yourselves pro-life should be required to do the same. Go look at all of the unwanted children. Imagine your agenda successful, then take that number of children to the tenth power.

Wolf Blitzer was relaying what Dr. Dobsen%u2019s organization, Focus on the Family, said condemning Mary Chaney becoming pregnant as a lesbian woman. Given the Presidents pledge to pass an amendment to the Constitution outlawing gay marriage and Focus on the Family%u2019s political power within the Republican Party the question is valid. The Vice President chickens out of standing up for his daughter and crossing Conservative Republicans because he%u2019s a cowardly politician afraid of upsetting a powerhouse within his party. But here is Mary Cheney, the mother of the unborn child, blaming the messenger as well. She, Mary, has politicized her own pregnancy by doing the same thing as her politician father. She has made her baby a political prop and shown the world that she, her father and her unborn child are all tools of the Republican Party.

"But these evil and irresponsible creatures don't give a dam how many young American minds they mix up and mislead into a life of deviance and perversion."

Do you SERIOUSLY think some teenager out there is going to "become" gay just because Mary Cheney is on the news?

The vice president's dysfunctional and deviant family with the mentally mixed up ***** for a daughter is setting a terrible example for the young minds of America!

But these evil and irresponsible creatures don't give a dam how many young American minds they mix up and mislead into a life of deviance and perversion.

These devils just want their so-called 'freedom' to condone and promote their deviant behaviors to minors and to the weak minds of America, and so increased the amount of Americans with diseased behaviors. Tsk-tsk
