(CBS)  Jennifer Lopez has always proudly trumpeted her Latina heritage, which includes a strong Roman Catholic faith.

The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that J.Lo may have made the switch to the increasingly popular religion amongst Hollywood heavyweights, Scientology.

Rumors about J.Lo's interest started when she and her husband, singer Marc Anthony, attended Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding. Lately she has been seen socializing with the couple more frequently and is also known to be good friends with Scientologist and "King of Queens" star Leah Remini.

The Daily News reported that Remini claims Scientology helped her get pregnant with its flaxseed oil and sauna treatments. It is widely believed that Lopez is eager to have children.

Fast Facts

Rumors that Lopez might have become interested in the religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard have apparently been fueled by occasions in which she has socialized with celebrity Scientologists Tom Cruise and Leah Remini.

Last month, the New York Post reported that J.Lo adopted Scientology phrases and has been explaining the church to people.

Some people from Lopez's old neighborhood in the Bronx expressed dismay that she would abandon Catholicism in favor of the religion that they see as nothing more than a Hollywood trend.

"Perhaps her background is not important to her," Sister Lucille Coldrick, principal of her old school, Preston High in Throgs Neck (where she graduated in 1987), told the Daily News. "My guess is that given the hoopla surrounding Scientology, it's not a bad way to get publicity. How many talk shows would invite her on to talk about Scientology? They're not going to invite her to talk about being a Catholic."

J.Lo may not be the celebrity powerhouse she was, but she still captures the public's attention. Her drop in popularity started after her relationship with actor Ben Affleck fell apart. The movies they made together — "Gigli" and "Jersey Girl" — did poorly in the box office.

Lopez married Anthony, a Catholic, more than two years ago and the media frenzy surrounding her subsided. But J.Lo is looking for a comeback: she is starring in an MTV reality show called "Dance Life" and her new Spanish-language album is due April 3.

People from her past express not only dismay that she might become a Scientologist, but also that she has not given back more to her Bronx community.

"Her success is what screwed her up," Deacon Dhoel Canals of Holy Family Catholic Church and Grammar School in Castle Hill, where Lopez attended, told the Daily News. "She has done absolutely nothing for the community or the school that are part of her background. I feel the school is largely responsible for her success."

Lopez's camp says the star is not in the process of converting to the religion, founded 53 years ago by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Spokeswoman Leslie Sloane Zelnick told the Daily News that "Jennifer is not a Scientologist."

L Ron Hubbard and P.T. Barnum must have been related.

And those who believe in this goop must have all been dropped on their heads when they were infants.

Maybe J.Lo found out that the price of salvation was a bit too steep at $5000.00 a pop to get "Clear" and get rid of those nasty space aliens which are supposed to be inhabiting all our body's and thats why we have problems in our lives.. LMAO!

Scientology=the story of Xenu and his Galactic Confederacy. Xenu is introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecrafts resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the now living. The alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. Hubbard called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans," and the advanced levels place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects.

Like Hubbard said.. If you want to get RICH, start a religion..and boy he was right.

I just want to comment that my original (the second post listed in this storyline) post was CENSORED undoubtedly because of robotic scientologist (small 's', folks) adherents that complained.

I still urge anyone in the dark about this cult of losers to visit www.xenu.net and check out the depravity.

Also, do a Google image search on David Miscavige, the Pope of scientology, who was L. Ron Hubbard's buttboy and photographer when he was 17 years old. He is the guy who Tiny Tom Cruise, the dyslexic high school dropout, identified as his "...best friend" at his fake 'wedding' in Italy last year.

Germany does not allow the cult to call themselves a 'religion' there, and they are not granted the same favours of government they get here because of their claims. I think it's time we knuckled down on them here, too.

Now let's see how long it takes the scientologist geeks to complain and get this post dropped.

I don't think robot Tom hangs with anyone who isn't a Scifreakologist. So I believes Jenny is lying.

J Lo and anyone else has the right as human beings to worship whoever they want to.

If that is what makes a person happy then so be it. What gives you the right to judge someone elses religious beliefs?

There's a really good video on google video made by a british comic for Britain's Channel 4 tv called "The Beginner's Guide to L. Ron Hubbard". VERY funny & informative about what scientology is REALLY about.

I guess when your job revolves around pretending to be other people, you kind of lose touch with reality. She is a no talent who gets paid way too much because she in vouge as the poster child for Latinos. Her guilt from getting paid too much has now caused her to reach out for answers as to why she is a "chosen one" Scientology is a easy fit for idiots who were meant to be robots.

The Catholics are obviously condemning and sniveling--what happened to leaving it in God's hands? Doesn't make me want to become a Catholic. Scientologists don't disrespect others' faiths.
