Hurry Up And Give Birth, The Game Is On

(AP)  Nine months pregnant and married to a fervent Bears fan with tickets to Sunday's NFC Championship game, Colleen Pavelka didn't want to risk going into labor during the game against the New Orleans Saints.

Due to give birth on Monday, Pavelka's doctor told her Friday she could induce labor early. She opted for the Friday delivery.

"I thought, how could (Mark) miss this one opportunity that he might never have again in his life?" said Pavelka, 28, from the southwestern Chicago suburb of Homer Glen.

At 10:45 p.m. Friday, Mark Patrick Pavelka was born at Palos Community Hospital after close to six hours of labor.

While her husband watched the Bears play the New Orleans Saints at Soldier Field Sunday, Colleen planned to watch in the hospital with the baby wrapped in a Bears blanket — a Christmas gift from his grandmother.

The couple named Mark after his father, who wore a "Monsters of the Midway" shirt during the delivery.

"If he wasn't born by Sunday and the Bears won, I would have named him Rex," after Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, joked Mark Pavelka, 28.

Mark is the couple's second son.

duvina, you stated:
I think this really shows alot about what is wrong with the medical est. We wonder why insurance rates keep going up, well this is why. Completely unnessicary medical procedures are at the top of the list.

I am completely at a loss trying to figure out what you are saying here...your point??
Read the article again...the lady is PREGNANT...she is going to have a baby, whether it's on Friday or Monday. What "completely unnecessary medical procedures" did she have that will cause insurance rates to go up? Is it more expensive to have a baby on Friday than on Monday?

Dr J G....you said:

Having worked in a hospital for 20 years, and having lots of friends who have had babies, I know that "due dates" are changed for many different reasons...many for convenience. The reasons vary by person, and many have nothing to do with "life and better health of mother and child". And I'm unclear what you would postpone...the "silly" game or changing the natural process.

You all need to lighten up a little...this lady seemed excited to do this for her husband and she obviously had no problem with it, so why do you?

Doctors are guessing at best, and a given expected date could be as early as a week or two compared to actual date of delivery in the natural process. Intervention to change the natural process should be done only for the life and better health of mother and child, not a silly game that could be in any case postponed for other reasons. U.S. economy is suffering because you have deified games and jocks way too much above learning, now it is above life?

According to this article, the Mother was the one that made to decision to deliver early...by 3 days...she was due Monday. It's not like she was forced to deliver a month early, so her husband could go to the game!!!

I see a loving wife who is caring, understanding, and considerate of her husband's interests, (and maybe her own), and based her decision on those factors. Looking toward the future, I see parents who are probably going to be involved in their kids lives through sports...coaching Little League, Pee Wee Football, Basketball, Soccer...attending sporting events, etc as a family. My son is 37 years old, and I would
rather attend football games with him than anyone...we always attended games as a family. As a matter of fact, I am watching a FB game as I type this...my Login should reflect how I feel about sports...

You ask, what has happened to families, and families going down the tube because Daddy likes football (sports)??? It may just make them a closer knit family...take a look at the Manning family...perfect example!

I commend this lady....Go Bears...Go Colts
Going to the Super Bowl...

I'd say some priorities need to get in order here! Sounds like mom and the kids will always take a back seat to the football games. And we wonder why america's families are going down the tube.
