(AP)  Three pregnant teens living in a group home whacked the director in the head with a frying pan, tied her up and then fled the scene in a stolen minivan, police said.

The director, who was tied up with power cords Tuesday, eventually broke free and called police, American Fork police Sgt. Shaun Greening said. She also freed another pregnant teen tied up in the attack, he said.

Authorities believed the teens — two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old — left the state and a search was under way. Police said the teens also stole the director's purse, checkbook, credit cards, cell phone and video camera.

The motive wasn't clear. Parents of the girls, who are from California, Texas and Illinois, were notified, police said.

The home, a place for struggling pregnant teens, is in Utah County, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. Pregnant teens are typically sent there by parents to get away from problems with drugs or boyfriends. They attend class and learn about prenatal care, childbirth and adoption while staying at the home, according to police.

Are we in Nazi Germany? As if it wasn't bad enough that the parents force the teenagers to carry the pregnancy, they send them to what is essentially a wilderness jail with no oversight. What did the parents expect of these girls? The lack of contraception is probably what led to these pregnancies in the first place. This is Utah, remember, where condoms aren't even allowed in at the border.

Uhmm. Does that article say anything about mormonism? Don't judge on anything you obviously don't have any idea about. And no. I'm not mormon. Surely you don't seriously think birth control is OUTLAWED in Utah do you? That's ignorance at its best.

Anyway, I'm not convinced that group homes are the best thing. Though, if these girls did have a problem with drugs or abusive idiot boyfriends, then this could have been the only viable option.

Something odd about this. Sounds like the movie (The Magdelane Sisters(?)) about the preganant or "bad" girls sent to the nuns in Ireland, back in 60's where theyw ere totally abused.

I wonder where the babies go when they are born.

I disagree. What started all this to begin with .. was a lack of communication between the parents and young women. It starts when young women don't feel able to communicate thier needs to thier families.. therefore.. they find other ways of getting the understanding and attention they are looking for. They turn to men to feel loved and understood.
Do I know what I am talking about.. YES.I've lived that life. While life was harsh having a child at such a young age...self respect and determination helped see me through tough times.I sincerly hope that these young women find the courage to turn thier lives around for the sake of thier children.

I repeat, run girls run! Don't let these so called authorities take your children! No matter what happens to you and your children, it'll be better then if they are raised in the Nazi Mormon/Christian state. Let them grow up free from that hate, prejudice and narrow-mindedness.

You might want to read the article a little better. It says that the families are from California, Texas and California. If you are going to make such stupid comments as above, make sure you have the right facts!!!

I don't blame the girls for taking off. What if they don't want to give up their babies? In this country, no matter how young the mother is, they can't force her to relinquish her baby. I'm sorry they're in a lot more trouble now.

You didn't read the article very well if you think these girls are "from" Utah. They are from California, Texas and Illinos. None were from Utah. It is said that parents are not able to work with their children but sometimes parents take drastic steps when kids are teens to try and fix too many years of neglect or raising children that are brats, ones with little rules. But groups homes are not lock down facilities. Groups homes are places for kids to go to help them take the next step of getting out on their own. Sorry to say these girls will probably deliver their babies in Prison where they should. I wonder why they couldn't find a group home in there own state. My guess is because of their behavior in this one. I hope that the group home presses charges to the max and i hope that they go to jail for a long time to learn a lesson that their parents didn't teach them. I think that they are way to immature to raise a baby, adoption at this point should be mandated due to their selfish and inabilty to make appropriate choices.

" It starts when young women don't feel able to communicate thier needs to thier families.. "

Hardy har har. It starts when obstinate drugged-out bimbos get knocked up by sleazeballs. Their needs are the same needs that Lindsey Lohan and Paris and Britney have - the need for massive cocaine and s*x and money they don't earn but burn. The need to stay out all night, having s*x with random men or women, taking any drug they can get their hands on, makig insane commitments to worthless brutal and abusive loser men, etc. And abusing their parents who are paying for it the whole time.

But let's have sympathy for those bimbos, they just don't get enough communication, sure. That's it.

I think it is ridiculous that parents still send their pregnant daughters to these homes. This is 2007 not the 1950's. Why cant the girls make decisions, it is their children? They fled the home for some kind of reason, why not ask them instead of jumping to assumptions when they find them. I am 20 and just had a daughter 6 mths. ago and im pretty sure i made the decision to keep my daughter and raise her on my own, and we're doin great, what makes a girl this young incapable? Women have been doing it forever why is now so different? My daughter has turned out great, I say let the girls make their own decisions they got themselves pregnant, they obviously want their children, leave them alone and respect and support their decision. You go Girls!!!!

It didn%u2019t say that the girls were being forced to give up there children for adoption. It says that they talk about it along with prenatal care, childbirth and I am sure that they also talk about parenting which they apparently didn%u2019t get from their parents. But at this point abortion is not an option apparently. I think that they hit a lady in the head with a frying pan, (it could have killed her) stole a car, credit cards, and other valuables. These girls are criminals and should go to jail for attempted murder as far as I see it. The second fact is that they are pregnant. Bummer the babies shouldn%u2019t have to be left out in the cold because of the stupidity of there mother. You might have made good choices in your child's life. But these girls are not, and babies shouldn%u2019t be raise in jail.

Find em, catch em, prosecute them and give the babies to people who are intelligent and cappable of being a good example.

I don't think the parents neccesarily did anything wrong, no one here really knows. I doubt that place in Utah was cheap. Sounds like they had good intentions. No one really knows what that place is like. But we DO know those girls HIT that woman with a pan, tied up another pregnant teen and took off like the idiots they are. They'll probably get a slap on the hand and a welfare check.

"them alone and respect and support their decision"

Well, like most dumb girls, you want the world both ways. You want to be "left alone" when it comes to dumb decisions and doing things for your own selfish reasons that are illogical and destructive, but you need millions of dollars of support and infrastructure just to eat breakfast in the morning.

This, the dumb wasteful girl of America, is a luxury we just can't afford.

Children are the mutual property and responsibility of the entire society; they are a cost and a burden to everyone in the community. You have burdened 100's of people, hundreds more toil in fields and factories, hundreds more dying in Iraq, all for the child you have so

The people that run these kinds of places are usually perverts, that's WHY they're running them in the first place... come on what would you think if I Bildo Oreilly opened up a group home for wayward pregnant teenage girls lol... Run girls Run.....

Most places that house any child are highly regulated. The staff have background checks and are checked and rechecked by every regulatory agency that is in that state. The director is a women. If she was a prevert why would the girls have to tie up the other pregnant girl. These girls are BRATS. They have been spoiled. And they belong in jail.

You know what first of all I was 17yrs old and my Mother and Father sent me to a group home like this in chattanooga , Tenn and they ppl that do run these places are Preverts both men and women...And another thing these places push on you to give your child up for adoption and NO its not right...Another thing I ran away from the group home that I was in ..and I am doing great I kept my child who is now 8yrs old 1 of the smartest kids in his class...These girls are still kids if you want them to be better than you where then work with them help them..Instead of sending them away and letting someone else deal with your problem because all these ppl are doing is making it worse for them and teaching them that it is okay to give up....it pisses me off that these parents praise there self so much on being such good parents..(Well if your such good parents then where the *ell is you kid) I am sorry but thats just my opion.....

Not to infer that whatever reasons these girls had for doing what they did were not valid, the choice they made to attack and rob the director was wrong! Whatever problems they felt they had just increased tenfold and if they couldn't handle a group home imagine the next few years in a juvenile detention. Two wrongs do not make a right!

These young women did not break out, they were not in prison. Although there methods were wrong we need to know why these young women felt the need to leave this group home. Also why such a home exists in this day and age. There need to be more local options for pregnant young women near their hometowns. Teens are no longer children and we have to start listening to what they have to say to prevent things such as this from happening.

Well I agree with a lot of viewpoints here- these children are the parent's problem first and foremost, but I do understand the need for professional(AND SECURE)facilities for extremely out of control teens- notably females. I was unbelievably out of control as a 16 year old- and deviously resourceful too, which is really scary. I was put in a facility for troubled teens, because I stole $2000 from my father's safe and ran away. Thank God I wasn't killed- I bragged about the cash to every low life I ran into.
I think these girls should be encouraged by their families to keep their children if they are deemed fit, and if they want them. Otherwise proper homes should be implemented, to hell with the mother's "rights". I know I wasn't capable of making good decisions at the age of 16- and it's GLARINGLY obvious these three girls cannot either.
I also blame wishy washy parenting for a lot of today's problems with kids. I see parents asking toddlers to "please" stop doing something they shouldn't be doing fifty times, in these pleading pathetic voices. Parents allow themselves to be suckered constantly by their own children! "No" these days means "Do it anyway." Kids don't take adults seriously, thus the whacking over the head with a frying pan incident. Kids know how to completely manipulate to get what they want, and they learn how to do it at home.
