The sexually transmitted bug — known as trichomoniasis — infects about 170 million people each year, including 8 million in North America alone. Researchers say the parasite is emerging as a major player in the spread of the AIDS virus around the world.
The bug is easily treated but often goes undiagnosed, which helps it spread and develop resistance to treatment.
Though both men and women can be infected, men usually show no symptoms. In women, the bug can cause pelvic disease and affect pregnancy. It also leads to increased HIV infection among women.
The genome study of the parasite is published in tomorrow's edition of the journal Science.

- We may be the dirtiest things around because of all those things, especially disinfectants and bacteriocides that are in use now. Being too clean can cause as many problems as being too dirty. Even elephants know to protect their skin from too much sunshine.
Women show more symptoms with STD's because the place where they grow is warm, moist and dark which bacteria, virus, etc just love.
Some of the teachings were from observation which Europeans chose to ignore. The Africans, Asians and Indians had some of the same observations that have been ignored for centuries. - Reply to this comment
- So true newster1, all sorts of things can be got by intercourse with many partners,, things like cervical cancer, cancer of the ***, etc etc... I wonder if the Bible is so old fashioned after all, when one considers that it recommends to only have *** when one is married,, perhaps that was to ensures no sexually transmitted diseases, but what the heck sexually transmitted diseases keeps the population down...
But it puzzles me that even though the Jews were told to do this 4000 years ago that science has only just found out that circumcision helps to stop sexually transmitted diseases including HIV,and strange how they have discovered that washing ones hands after touching the sick, dying, women giving birth etc stops disease spreading, yet the Jews were told to do that 4000 years ago. And this is only the tip of the iceburg of what they were told to do for their health yet science has only just found out.... - Reply to this comment
- I love the invisibility ray journalists use on men's health issues: "men usually show no symptoms." But some men do: it's called epididymitis. But, just by saying that men usually show no symptoms, or a that a small percentage of men contract breast cancer, or, only a small number of men will get penile cancer (so, who cares if there's an HPV vaccine out there that could save their lives), or, don't even mention that millions of us have osteoporosis and the reporter can just go on to leave us out of the rest of their report. On another note: has anyone else noticed that the men's health message boards on WebMD have been hijacked by their female moderator who is both unqualified to do that job and frequently insensitive to the male posters' concerns?
