"I've been hearing these stories. It's dreadful," she said. "Honestly, I live in England and so, I get – I'm pretty cut off from a lot of these stories. I only read stuff about, or hear stuff about the Royal Family. And so I've come to New York and the first thing I hear is about everyone not wearing their underpants. What's going on? ... It's freezing outside!"
Letterman reminded Madonna about the time she brought him a pair of her underpants as a gift and told the singer that he still had them.
"Maybe you could send them to Britney," Madonna quipped.Photos: Madonna In Malawi
Madonna also talked candidly about the controversy surrounding her adoption of a baby boy named David from Malawi.
"The controversy took me by surprise," she said. "We did everything by the book and we went through the courts and, you know, everything was kosher in terms of legal, but it was – I think it brought a lot of attention to a country who's just coming to terms with what they should do with the overwhelming number of orphans that are there. There's over a million orphans in Malawi and in my opinion, the laws need to change because these children need to be rescued."
The singer went on to say that the 15-month-old David is "a champion tantrum thrower" whom they call "King David."Video: See Madonna on "Late Show With David Letterman"
"It's interesting, when they're that age or any age, they really can't do anything for themselves. They can't dress themselves, they can't feed themselves, they can't go anywhere by themselves, but yet they're running the entire show."

Obviously you haven't recovered from your unmentionable past to know any better. LOL - Reply to this comment
- Listen up people. I am 54 & I have probably done it all & believe me when I say I wish I could claim to have altiemer's because of not wanting to even think about my past; but that's not who I am today or who I have always been. I am a good person, a good mother & I know that if I had young children to raise I would be the best Mother they could have. Just because Madonna has a past doesn't mean she isn't cable of being decent. All you people better read your Bible about casting the first stone. Madonna, you keep up the good work girl.

- More "dreadful" than a loose and lost female removing her draws in public is a loose and lost female removing children from their indigenous cultures to ruin their psyche for life!
Of course we don't expect this lost ho to be able to appreciate the principles of Human Virtues. - Reply to this comment
- Madonna is the sh**!! You can't compare white trailer trash to her! Let's get real here, Madonna is Madonna. Just like when she went blonde w/ her dark eyebrows, not too many women can carry that. But that was then, times have changed and you roll with it... Let's hope no one tries to go without shaving their pits... ewww!
You know she can give a rats a** who does what. Maybe she doesn't have time to read the tabloids or any other Mag... - Reply to this comment
- With age comes maturity. Why would Madonna be any different than anyone else? In 20 years Britney (if she's still known the way Madge is) will be tut-tutting about the lack of modesty of the youths of that time. Makes me cringe to think what some future "starlet" might flash! LOL!

- Despite what I said earlier...(I'm no real fan of Ms M)
I think Madonna was being very tongue-in-cheek about the going without panties thing. She could care less about anyone not wearing underwear and she certainly heard about it...England's tabloids were screaming about it, I'm sure. She likes Britney, she probably thinks the whole thing is "cute" or something. (I don't, mind you...but M probably does...) - Reply to this comment
- The Material girl grew up! Yay!!!!! You go Mama
MaDonna, and thank-you for telling Ms. Spears to put some drawers on, cause that is just plain nasty not to mention she is a mother too! Please help her! Tell her to go back to school or something and try and grow up! - Reply to this comment
- While I at times admired (the person) and enjoyed Madonna's music I must wonder if she is living in a glass house??? As to living in England and only hearing about the royals??? Please?!?!?!?! get a grip! I am an American living in Scotland yet every "yellow" journalism paper/celebrity mag and even the reputable papers cover or mentioned the incident/s of going commando per BSpears ... it was even mentioned briefly on one national news network/station... and as these are mainly based in England-was Madonna living underground at the time???? Sad to say even here in Great Britain everything/anything BSpears does is news ...perhaps it is that Madonna dislikes for instead of her making the headlines and tabloids it is her former best friend?
While I have nada againest Madonna I feel that her statement was totally lacking in truth. - Reply to this comment
- People are so bitter! Sure, Madonna made some dumb choices when she was younger - she isn't being judgemental as most of the posters are - she's giving an opinion. I think she is a remarkable, responsible adult. I wish her well.

- Is this the *** that launched a thousand strips? I recall a photo of Ciconi standing totally buff on a public thoroughfare. Now she's got religion, which covereth a multitude of nonsense.

- i agree with all the posts so far - Madonna's most certainly had a lapse in memory. i know she's older and hopefully wiser, but don't bash young stupid starlets when you yourself was the ring leader 2 decades ago.

- What's "dreadful" to Ms. M is that there was no apparent "stunt" or money to be made ie. in a book nor was it promoting a new refashioning of Britney's persona. This is the same woman who once walked around naked in the US, remember?
Yes, dahhhling....have a cuppa and dish about the royals...write a few children's books, move to jolly old England...ride some horses, adopt a needy child...but we know who you still are. I mean, did just have yourself on a cross a few months ago. Delusions of grandeur, my dear. - Reply to this comment
- Like Madonna is the one to preach on morals, or did she forget she put out a coffee table S E X book showing her in all sorts of nude poses
What a hypocrite. - Reply to this comment
