The pop star, who has taken heat for her recent late-night escapades, said in the message, "The media has criticized my every move and printed a skewed perception of who I really am as a human being. Behind every decision I have made in my public life, there always seems to be an apparent contradiction. I have come to terms with that — which is why I usually don't pay much attention to it."
Spears went on to call the last few years "very enlightening" and discussed her new album, which is in the works.
"Now that I've had the time to be 'me,' I've been able to sit down and think about where I want to go with myself as an entertainer with absolutely no strings attached. I am now more mature and feel like I am finally 'free.' I've been working so hard on this new album, and I can't wait for you all to hear it and to go on tour again! I would like to exclusively tell you that I am working hard to release the new album sometime later this year, but the date is, of course, not certain yet," she wrote.Photos: Britney Spears
Spears says she is planning a comeback that will be "bigger and better than ever" and plans on reaching out to her fans even more.
"I noticed today that one of my biggest fan sites is shutting down soon, and I want you all to know that I do understand all the reasons that went behind making that decision and I am sad to see it closing," she wrote. "If I were you, I'd be unhappy too if I had to read what I've been reading every day. But trust me, I get it. I know I've been far from perfect and the media has had a lot of fun exaggerating my every move, but I want you all to know that I love my fans so much and I appreciate everything you have done for me, so Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!"
The message comes on the heels of a USA Today story in which her manager, Larry Rudolph, said she is calling the recent spate of bad media coverage her "rocky moment." Spears has been criticized not only for exposing herself while in the company of Paris Hilton, but also for staying out late without her sons, 1-year-old Sean Preston and 3-month-old Jayden James.
"Britney knows exactly what she needs to do," he told the paper. Spears' bad behavior following her November announcement that she would divorce her husband of two years, Kevin Federline, prompted the closure of one of the largest Spears fan sites, Worldofbritney.com.
"I've not been happy with the way she's portraying herself," site founder Ruben Garay told the paper.
Last month, Garay posted an official announcement on the site: "As Britney keeps losing her identity and credibility within fans and industry people, so is WoB. We're moving on to greater, bigger things. I would therefore like to announce the permanent shut down of World of Britney.com beginning January 31st, 2007."
Rudolph said Spears may not be behaving perfectly, but many of the reports are either fabricated or exaggerated, especially the New Year's Eve report of a collapse.
"We were sitting there drinking orange juice," he said. "She got tired in a club, and we took her back to her room. Suddenly, I'm hearing words like 'collapsed' and 'passed out.'"
Rudolph said that Spears' album is half-finished, and she sees this as her moment to win dispirited fans back.
"Britney is increasingly motivated to get out there," he said. "She sees this as a challenge, that some fans may be questioning her. She is respectful. She sees this as her challenge to win them back."

- Children who are the age of this girl's children
usually go to bed between 8 and 9 pm. So what's the big deal about her leaving to go out for a few hours and let off some steam? That's what the "media" is doing to Britney. Maybe she IS trailer trash -- so what? It was the "media" who labeled her a "Pop Princess" I agree the panty thing etc.was stupid. But let's be aware that there are people out there watching for her mistakes.
God forbid that any of us should have to live that way -- can you imagine? She's just a performer for goodness sakes -- not a role model! - Reply to this comment

- How can the media skew your hatred for underwear??

- Britney has NO CLASS whatsoever! If she were to suddenly drop off the face of the earth, I wouldn't care for one splitting second! She's just plain disgusting!

- Let me get this straight . . . . Britney "forgets" to wear underwear (among lots of other totally trashy, *** behavior), and it's the media's fault? Oh PUH-LEEEEEEZE my aching head! Britney - you need to grow up and get a clue, you little piece of trash, and re-hiring your former handler wouldn't be such a bad idea either. Seems like you need somebody around to tell you how to act, remind you about underwear, etc. Maybe it's too late . . you're well on your way to becoming so Last Year, so washed-up, so BORING.

- Hey Agnim, you're consistently crude and disrespectful to the people who read this. You have nothing to say of any value, and certainly no better than Britney (who's just a young idiot learning her lessons). Maybe YOU should go away.

- Hey Brit, stop doing stupid-a$$ things and the media will stop portraying you that way.
See that? Problem solved. - Reply to this comment
- If Britney had an ounce of good brain matter, she would FIRE HER MANAGER AND JUST GO AWAY!
Let things blow over like the air cleansing her shaved ****.
Leave the scene; then come back in a couple of years saying that "I was trying to be a better mom to my kids". All will be forgotten and forgiven.
But as long as she and her moronic manager continues to hog the spotlight, they will be reminding us that she's just another celebrity ho. LOL - Reply to this comment

That's right!
"No G-strings" for little miss tramp. LOL - Reply to this comment
- "time to be me"? "no strings attached"? What happened to her two children? No strings...she disgusts me. More mature? HA!!!! Mature is taking care of your own children, not depending on employees to raise them. It's also making decisions that will, at the least, not harm your children. Don't try to tell me all this negative publicity won't harm them, if not today, then someday. GROW UP AND TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!!!!

Yes the media make believe Britney was other than trailer trash. LOL
The media should be faulted for creating greater expectation than a trailer trash could ever live up to.
And the media wrongly showed the little ho without bush, when in fact she has never shaved 'down there'. LOL - Reply to this comment
