California Highway Patrol officers took Richie, 25, into custody without incident after she failed a field sobriety test, CHP Officer Todd Workman said.
Her black Mercedes SUV was stopped in the car pool lane of State Highway 134 when officers arrived.
Authorities said they received 911 calls about a car going the wrong way on the freeway and the car matched the description of Richie's.
Police tell TMZ that Richie admitted she had taken Vicodin and smoked pot. The Web site reports that a preliminary screening showed Richie was not under the influence of alcohol.
Richie's publicist, Nicole Perna, told The ShowBuzz Monday that she had no statement about the matter.
Richie, star of "The Simple Life" reality series and daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie, was booked in Glendale, tested for drugs and released later Monday morning, Workman said. He said the results of the drug test hadn't been determined.
In October, Richie sought treatment to address her inability to gain weight. The fifth go-round of the "The Simple Life," in which she stars with Paris Hilton, was postponed for the treatment.
"She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition," Richie's rep said in a statement at the time. "It is important to Nicole that she achieves this goal in a healthy way as this is not a treatment for an eating disorder."Photos: Nicole's Disappearing Act
In 2003, Richie was arrested and charged with possession of heroin. Richie's bosom buddy, Hilton, was arrested in September for suspicion of driving under the influence.

- What do you expect her to do..... She cannot just idly stand by while Paris and Britney get all the press flashing Britney's hooha and....... well.....doing whatever Paris does. If anything Nicole should be applauded for restraining herself to pot and pills. SHe SHOULD have kicked it up a notch and taken a poop on the hood of the police cruiser while belting out the lyrics to her daddy's classic "Dancing on the Ceiling!!!!!!!!" I guess she'd rather remain in Paris' shadow her whole life.

- What a waste. She is all take and no give. Maybe her dad needs to practice "tough love" on her and see how she gets by with no help from daddy. Certainly, she isn't gonna bail her own *** out. She has "hired help" for that. She is such a loser.

- Her and Paris Hilton are nothing but a snobby bunch of lowlife pot heads that should do a reality show behind bars! They are spoiled, rich brats who think they are Gods gift to men. They get away with stuff like this and shoplifting (Paris and her DVD) and NOTHING happens to them as surely it would for us more common folk. The truly sad part is with those who support these losers by watching their TV shows and movies. Quit supporting these no-life%u2019s.
