A state-by-state look at U.S. Census Bureau data on income and poverty levels.

(AP)  The number of people struggling with hunger in the United States fell in 2005, the first such decline in six years, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday.

Last year, 35 million people suffered food insecurity, meaning they didn't have enough money or resources to get food. The number was 38 million in 2004.

The department had waited until after Election Day to issue the annual report, prompting accusations from Democrats that the Bush administration was playing politics with hunger.

Despite the positive news, the report is still drawing criticism, this time because analysts decided not to use the word "hunger" to describe how hungry people are.

Changing the wording "is a huge disservice to the millions of Americans who struggle daily to feed themselves and their families," said the Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, an anti-hunger group.

"We should not hide the word hunger in our discussions of this problem, because we cannot hide the reality of hunger among our citizens," Beckmann said.

The report found:

  • There were more people with very low food security — those who are worst off. The number was 10.8 million, up from 10.7 million in 2004.
  • There were 24 million people with low food security, down from 27.5 million in 2004.

The group doing the worst, whether measured by food insecurity or poverty, "isn't being helped enough to start shrinking, even though the economy keeps growing," said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, an anti-hunger group.

Weill said the overall drop in food insecurity shows the effectiveness of programs like food stamps and school meals.

"But it's not cause for anybody letting up — it's just a sign that these programs work, and we need to redouble our efforts to get them to more people in need," Weill said.

In the report, the terms "low food security" and "very low food security" replace the old descriptions of "food insecurity without hunger" and "food insecurity with hunger." The change was recommended by the National Academies, which advise the government on science and medical issues.

Among the states, Hawaii saw the biggest drop in the number of hungry people, from 12.9 percent in 1998 to 7.8 percent in 2005. South Carolina saw the biggest increase, from 11 percent in 1998 to 15.5 percent in 2005.

The hunger report is based on Census Bureau data on poverty, which stopped climbing in 2005.

If the economy is so stong then there would not be such numbers in the US.The fact remains many people are working for sub standard wages(the minimium) or are left to live off of social security with spiraling medical cost eating up a large portion of their checks.35 million people is more than ten percent of the population.Think about that 11% of the population of the wealthiest nation in the world is going hungry. These numbers do not reflect 2006 which with gasoline prices, medical treatment and prescriptions along with food prices that have climbed.Wait until we see that report. My bet is the number of people going hungry is higher.

Cause and effect. More illegal aliens entered the country....thus more workers were hired to pick the crops faster. Thus getting it to the hungry.

Less citizens would be hungry if they had the jobs picking the crops. Less citizens would be hungry if the American government wasn't wasting money on illegal aliens and using it on American citizens/residents.

If they didn't go hungry they stole the food or it was given to them.
With the money these jobs pay they couldn't buy it.The jobs bush has been bragging about.

35 million with hungar pains, not a surprising number considering there's an estimated 30 million illegals living here.

35 Million hungry Americans....good thing we're giving hundreds of billions to Iraq in aid.

Screw hungry Americans. The poor people in the rest of the world are just more important.

How many of that 35M are obese? In other countries, poor people are actually skinny - here they are morbidly obese. I doubt 35M Americans don't have enough to eat. Get serious!

I'd rather send the aid to Africa, where people actually have it rough in life.

I suppose you are aware that the cheapest foods to buy are the ones that are the worst for a person who wants to lose weight. They are things like flour, sugar, corn meal, rice, potatoes, etc. Fresh fruits and vegetables are out of reach for many of those who need them most.

It's called neglect and, thanks to the Bush Administration, we're sending troops to Iraq (spending billions of $$$) to save those "poor" people when we should be taking care of our own.

Dubya has felt hunger once. It was way back in college when he and his buddies got the munchies after a hard night of partying. The feeling soon passed though after he got his nanny Rosita out of bed and she made him something to eat.

This is why we shouldn't be spending 9 mil on a memorial!

I have been in that situation, and it has nothing to do with not having a job- it is more from bills being too high. And no, we didn't have cable/satelite, credit cards or even a decent vehicle to drive.

sometimes you have to make a choice between having gas to get to work and having a healthy meal- it is a endless cycle.

We ate ALOT of bologna and not much else.We apparently made too much to get help. No wonder the poor are obese.
There is also a gross abuse of the food stamp system. As a grocery store cashier, I saw people using food stamps to buy sodas, candy, steak, chips, and once even lobster! Very few fruits and vegs came through those orders.
Why not make a system that pays for specific things (no sodas!).

"Food insecurity???" Is this the new politically correct term for "going hungry"?

For a country where children make pictures out of macaroni, rice, and beans...this is a disgrace.

One of the major reasons this is happening is the misappropriation of the food stamp program.
When I see people using food stamps and riding off in their Lexuses it make me ill. They have no shame. After hurricane Wilma FEMA set up a dist center to give out debit cards - guess who was on line with their diamonds and rolexes.

I had been asked by a cash-strapped food stamp holder whether I wanted to save a bundle by trading places with him at the checkout counter. He'd use his food stamp to buy my groceries while I bought his beer. I refused although I know he eventually succeeded with someone else. I also knew of someone who with this arrangement bought expensive steaks in exchange for his prescription painkiller tablets. Some people would rather starve so they can stay drunk or high.

When I worked as a grocery store cashier it seemed like the WIC program was the best (women, infants and children.) WIC people could only get milk, juice and cereal - and then, only the non-sugar added kind. It was a supplemental food program, very specifically designed to improve nutrition. Maybe there should be a no-brand food program of eggs, rice, cheese, fish and vegetables
for food stamp receipients. Lower the requirements for the program, but make the food choices more specific to avoid fraud.

In this instance, I have to put as much blame on the states as I do the feds. Texas loses millions of dollars in federal matching money every year because the cretins in Austin underfund state programs. As the indigent health care coordinator for my county, I can tell you that going hungry is not the only problem these people have and contrary to what some people think, most of them don't have a Lexus. Sure, there is welfare fraud but mostly we are talking about people who are working low wage jobs and just don't make enough to pay for everything. Think about it a person working 40 hours a week at minimum wage brings home about $200 a week/$1000 month. Pay rent of $350-$450 [if they are lucky] and $350-$450 for utilities [if they are real lucky] and $100 for gasoline [if they only go to work and back]--what is left for food? If they make that much, they might qualify for subsidized housing and utilities but in Texas they make too much for food stamps and Medicaid. All that keeps a lot of families going is free and reduced price lunches for kids at school and hand-outs from food banks.

That old N***** with a Lexus is pretty much a stereotype. Poverty, hunger, and disease are being fueled by state and national government.

    Just for everyone Information

It is my understanding that a person
can get all the amino acids, protein needed
    with beans and rice

it takes 1 lbs per person, per week

for $40 (Sam's Club) you can buy enough food for one person
    for almost 2 yrs (50lbs rice $11, 50lbs beans $25)
remember this some day your life and the life of your family may depend on it...

The problem is most people don't know how to buy food
if fact there are a lot of people out there who really don't know how to cook
    from scratch...

Yeah, neanderthal, those little malnourished African children you see with swollen bellies and hollow faces subsist on beans and rice so that's mighty white of you to make such a fine suggestion. The nearest Sam's club is 96 miles round trip from here. Can we sign up with you fro transport?

A poster stated that he witnessed an abuse of the Food Stamp program while he was shopping.
This is a huge (but wealthy,) country. When you have a system whereby it is attempting to assist millions, obviously there will be a few who will abuse the system. But people like you (who would gleefully take money out of the pockets of the poor in the guise of tax cuts,) try to make it appear that such abuse is rampant. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Another poster stated that his impression of the poor is that many are obese. Let me unlighten you. Poor people buy the food they can afford - pasta, flour based products, rice, ect. Such starchy foods cause obesity. It is not the fault of the poor that many are overweight. By the way, the 35 million figure, if anything is probably a conservative estimate. It is well known that it is not below the Bush Administration to manipulate such figures for propaganda purposes. They've done it many times before, (mostly in regard to the situation in Iraq.)

    my calculations

    50lbs beans + 50lbs rice = 100 lbs beans and rice
    52 weeks a year

    100 / 52 = 1.9 yr

    your calc.
    for 2.4 months
    2.4 mo = 10 weeks

    100 / 10 = 10lbs per week
    7 days a week
    10/7 = 1.4 lbs a day

have you ever eaten a cup of rice in one sitting
    much less a 3/4 of a pound..

    my calculations
    1.9 yr...

Yes I will agree if you can eat a 3/4 pound of rice in one sitting
    you should buy more..

C'mon, this story can't be true! The stock market is at it's highest ever, President Bush is touting wonderful job numbers, consumer confidence is up....

Or could it be that all the success stories we keep hearing about are mostly focused on the top 1% of America's economic scale, who currently earn 16% of America's wages, and own most of the stocks.

Keep in mind that folks like Jon Tester are bringing economic issues to the table come January, and with the ever-growing wage disparity between rich and poor, the vast majority of not-rich people here are with them in wanting these issues addressed.

With this "great economy" there should be no food insecurity or is someone telling us lies again like the economy isn't great. A three million drop is like a rain drop. Not anything to brag about. And the rich get tax breaks and the poor get poorer. Did you know that South Africa kept their natives down by not feeding them a balance diet? That kept the children's brains from developing so adults didn't function as well as they should have. Could that be happening here?

If anyone in America is hungry why can't they find the nearest food bank, social service office or church to seek assistance. If they cannot walk or drive the meals on wheels will deliver.
