(AP)  Vice President Dick Cheney will spend Election Day on his first hunting trip since he accidentally shot a companion last February while aiming at a covey of quail on a private Texas ranch.

The vice president, after working at the White House on Monday morning, will head to South Dakota to spend several days at a private hunting lodge near Pierre. Lea Anne McBride, his press secretary, said it was an annual hunting outing and said Cheney spent Election Day in 2002 at the same lodge.

He will be accompanied by his daughter, Mary, and his political director, Mel Raines, who will help him keep track of the election returns, McBride said.

On a Feb. 11 hunting trip in Texas, Cheney shot attorney Harry Whittington in the torso, neck and face when he pulled the trigger on his 28-gauge shotgun. The vice president later called it "one of the worst days of my life" and said, "The image of him falling is something I'll never ever be able to get out of my mind."

The shooting was ruled an accident. Whittington was hospitalized for six days.

Quote: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that 500 farm-raised pheasants were released yesterday morning at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township for the benefit of Cheney's 10-person hunting party. The group killed at least 417 of the birds, illustrating the unsporting nature of canned hunts. The party also shot an unknown number of captive mallards in the afternoon.

Quote: Marlin Fitzwater tells Editor & Publisher that he is "appalled" by the way Cheney and his staff handled notifying the public about the hunting accident. The word should have been put out "in about two hours," Fitzwater said, not the 20 hours or so it took.

I am guessing it took 20 hours for him to sober up.

This should serve as a warning to all hunters in South Dakota:

There is a drunken lunatic roaming your rural areas. He is considered to be armed and dangerous and has been known to shoot people in the face.

HIs arrogance is beyond belief, the man has no sensitivity at all. Why doesn't he just sneak off quietly (as he does with so much government stuff) and go hunting without publicizing it. Does he really 1) have any friends, 2)who will go hunting with him? For God's sake, give the man rubber bullets.
Better yet, send him, Bush, Rumsfeld and Rice to Irag to replace some of the poor servicemen fighting "The Unwinnable Fight" dsgood33
