Required By Islam For Modesty, Or A Sign Of Political Extremism?

(AP)  In the West, traditional Muslim dress is seen as a refusal by Muslim immigrants to assimilate and accept Europe's secular values. Two years ago, France banned head scarves and other religious symbols from public places, enraging many Muslim immigrants. Australia's top Islamic cleric also recently sparked outrage when he said that women who do not dress modestly invite rape.

In the Arab world, the dispute centers on fears of growing Islamic extremism and concerns by secular governments, like Egypt's, that they will lose ground to Islamic opposition groups.

Complicating the issue, there is no uniform religious opinion across the Muslim world about whether a head scarf - much less a face veil - is required. Some view various forms of head scarves and niqabs as signs of cultural or Islamic pride. Others, however, view face veils as indications of Islamic extremist political opposition.

But some who wear the face veil contend they do so for purely personal religious reasons.

"Believe me, we are normal human beings. But they deal with us like terrorists who are going to blow up everything," said Ashgan, a woman wearing the veil at Helwan University, who would give only her first name during an interview with The Associated Press because she did not want to appear immodest.

She began wearing the niqab three years ago, and takes it off her face just before she enters the hostel's gate, she said.

The top theological authority of Al-Azhar University, the highest seat of Sunni Muslim learning, said he accepted the Helwan University decision to keep women wearing niqabs from the hostel as long as Helwan officials do not require women to also remove their head scarves.

Clerics who believe women should be veiled refer to a verse in the Quran to back up their beliefs: "O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks all over their bodies."

Many Islamic scholars do say that covering the hair is a religious duty, but others disagree and say the verse has other interpretations. As for the face veil, the majority of Islamic scholars say it is not required but is merely a custom that dates back to tribal, nomadic societies living in the Arabian desert before Islam began.

In Saudi Arabia, most women wear a face veil along with a head scarf and full black cloak - or face harassment by religious police.

Many Egyptian women took off their head scarves in the 1920s. But Egypt became more religious in the 1970s and women began wearing scarves again, even though the government does not encourage it.

Egypt keeps newscasters who wear head scarves off its TV stations; the president's wife, Suzanne Mubarak, and most female officials wear neither head scarf nor face veil.

But the streets are full of veiled women. There are no accurate statistics on Egypt's 75 million people, about 10 percent of whom are Christian Copts who do not wear veils. But between 70-80 percent of all Egyptian Muslim women are believed to wear a head scarf, according to most estimates.

why don't U ask all the jewish women who cover their head with headscarves or with synthetic hair to keep up with the tradition, ask them to remove it as well. Or maybe ask the nuns to remove it as well... and why put your said evolution to let go naked (oblige them, huh, why not).

Evolution is in the eyes of one individual at a time. So please stop this arguments that doesn't stand good ground. Well here you have it folks...what the war and all the political strife in middle east is all about. It is about control of their women. Make them wear the traditional muslim clothing. Think of it this way, if you as a westerner could control what your wife wears then odds are on you could control her entire life. Womens Lib hits the middle east. Man, that gets'em all fired up. Why they're even willing to die to have the right to control their female population. It's not really a war on terrorism, it's a war on chauvunism. I don't have any answers just observations. Anybody got any valid ideas on how to help muslim women be themselves?

Whether it's their part of culture or religion,atleast their culture and religion allows women to marry and fulfil the feminine demands of their bodies.The CATHOLIC NUNS who are not allowed to fulfil the Natural Feminine demands of their bodies by having *** with their husbands which is extremely UNNATURAL.I don't really know what they go through as we all know that a lot of CATHOLIC PRIESTS who are not allowed to marry have been caught SODOMIZING and MOLESTING those little young boys in the churches who call those priests FATHER.
Also we know that *** is a physiological process and physiology of *** depends on SEXUAL MATURITY,PUBERTY and whether hormones have started working in the body and started acting on the TARGET ORGANS or not.A girl or boy who cross puberty at young age can be told not to marry before 18 years of age but their HORMONES can not be told not to act on target organs.If a young boy is in love with his 28 years old school teacher and they both have fun enjoying *** with each other and then they are forced not to have relation with each other and be devoid of having fun and happiness in their lives this is brutality.It doesnt matter Muslim women wear whatever they want as long as they don't impose their views on us but we need to solve the problems of our country and stop being cruel on our citizens.

Women in Niqab or veil really look full of horror. They look strange creatures. A few of my friends are Muslims from Pakistan and Turkey and they tell me that veil is related to the culture of a some Arabian countries. In their countries they say, women dont cover their full faces but only in those provinces/regions where there are people who are deeply impressed by Arabian culture. Islam never asks women to put on full face veils. So this practice is cultural.

I agree with you.One of the other perfect example of imposing somebody's religious views on other people is to give HETEROSEXUALS the right to marry but at the same time forbiding the same thing on the HOMOSEXUALS which is clearly DICRIMINATION on the basis of SEXUAL ORIENTATION.Another great example is to allow the men to run and jog on the public completely TOPLESS but to arrest a WOMAN when she commits the same actions which is DISCRIMIANTION on the basis of GENDER.Can you believe in this 21st century,if a woman becomes TOPLESS in a public in an advance country like USA,she may get ARRESTED on the name of INDECENT EXPOSURE.The same behavior totally decent for the men is so INDECENT for a WOMAN because of being a woman that she may be put into JAIL.

I don't understand why some women would not take off their veils for a driver license's picture or to testify in court. putting all religion aside, there are common rules we all have to live by in this country in order to keep the society safe and free for all of us. The license's picture is for identification purposes, what? are they planning to lease out their licenses, so that anyone who puts on a veil can use the license. it's absurd. if they do not want to remove the veil then don't apply for a license, do they think they are above the law? they can do what they want but if want to live with the society there are certain rules that they have to follow, no exceptions, to keep fair and safe for everyone else.

I do not know what Islam would say on such a matter and I don't really care, but the custom originated with Genghis Khan when his hoards invaded the middle east. I do know or at least have been told that the Koran says there should be no compulsion in religion. Seems to me that kinda says do what you want. If the Koran is anything like the Bible then somewhere else it will say Kill all infidels. These books tend to cover all bases.

If the clerics are so concerned about protecting their men from evil influences then why don't they have the men face (no pun intended) the same restrictions they have imposed on the women. And make no mistake, this is a restriction on women imposed by the clerics.

If they want to wear one veil or twenty, let them.
But if they want to live in a civilized country they have to play by the rules: pictures on driver
licenses, taking the think of while testifying in court, etc. What they where on there own time is their business.
Also, if it wasn't for their fellow muslims, this would be such a problem.
And if they won't comply, throw them out of the country.
