Talent's campaign called the ad a false attack.

"Sen. Talent supports medical research including stem cell research that doesn't involve cloning or destroying a human embryo," said Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer.

Earlier this year, Talent withdrew his support for a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million-dollar fine and jail sentence on violators. But he opposes the Missouri ballot initiative, claiming it would "make cloning human life at the earliest stage a constitutional right."

Supporters of the state referendum deny that assertion, noting the language of the proposed constitutional amendment explicitly bans human cloning.

McCaskill, running even with Talent in the latest polls, hopes to get a boost from aligning herself with support for the ballot measure, which recent polls show has the support of 58 percent of likely voters. Backers of the measure have raised nearly $29 million toward its passage, the costliest political campaign in Missouri history.

Fox's ad urges voters that "what you do in Missouri matters to millions of Americans. Americans like me." The ad ends with a picture of McCaskill and her voice approving the message.

Couric asked, could he have waited to film it until he was having a better day, with less dyskinesia?

"You don’t know when that’s going to be," Fox said. "My mother was visiting that day, was in the back room and she was saying throughout the filming of (the ad) — and she was talking to my friends back there — and she was saying, 'he's trying so hard to be still.' And so she was the one actually when the comments were made, she was the only who was really angry, and she said 'I can’t even see straight.' I said, ‘Mom, just relax, it’s OK, don't worry about it.' But it’s just not that simple. That’s why we're doing this."

Does this sound like an apology to anyone else? I don't think so. Try again Rush!

""All I'm saying is I've never seen him the way he appears in this commercial for Claire McCaskill," says Limbaugh. "So I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act, especially since people are telling me they have seen him this way on other interviews and in other television appearances." Aside from admitting he was wrong and apologizing, what would you include in an apology?

Thanks Rush for helping put the Democrats over the top! Thanks Michael J. Fox for being a classy guy, heads above poor Rush. These campaign ads are now national news- Out here in the desert it looks like the Republicans are pretty hard up. We only have vote by mail in Oregon now so the election is almost over. The GOP candidate for Governor was going pretty good for a while but now he's going down in flames with the rest of the GOP ticket. Looks like this gives the big boost to McCaskill- who needs Talent anyway- another Bush clone.

Ronnie,
I think it's the 'if' in Rush's apology that makes it sound like something less than an apology. The 'bigly, hugely' part doesn't help either. It comes out sounding to me like he means it would be big of him to apologize if he turns out to be wrong, rather than an admission of being wrong and feeling remorse it. As Rush often states, he believes he's correct all of the time (or very nearly so), so he probably still believes what he originally said.

My father has had to deal with the effects of PD for the past 15 years and I know what the deep brain stimulator that Fox has had implanted in his brain can do. My father can not find the money for such a procedure but if he did then the shaking would not occur enough to notice. I think that Mr. Fox was shifting around more like a person with Cerebral Palsy and not a guy suffering from PD. If he is exploiting the disease then that%u2019s a shame... if not... I think he needs to be re-diagnosed or sue the doctors that put the stimulator in his brain because it%u2019s not working (maybe it needs new batteries?)

P.S. If you do not share my feelings please leave a comment and lets hear what you think!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Guess I should expect anyone watching NBC to be biased towards a liberal. Michael J. Fox should be telling anyone with parkinson's disease that there is hope, not from embronic stem cell research, which has never proven of any value, but with a probe inserted into the brain made by Medtronics. Michael, unfortunately opted for a surgery that was non-reversible and it didn't work for him. That's sad, but for others there is a remedy that is reversible! Check it out if you have the disease, it's awesome!

Michael did not have the stimulator according to my source, he had some type of lazer or searing of the brain. The stimulator works for most people! Rush didn't say Michael was faking, he just indicated he doesn't act like on the other shows he's been on.

baia1,

Fox said, "Unfortunately, Senator Jim Talent opposes expanding stem cell research." If you'll notice that is not a lie. Rich Chrismer, Talent's spokesman did not refute this. Chrismer said Talent supports "medical research including stem cell research that doesn't involve cloning or destroying a human embryo." This is already in place and does NOT expand stem cell research.

Fox also said "Senator Talent even wanted to criminalize the science that gives us a chance for hope." The article says Talent "supported a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million-dollar fine and jail sentence on violators." This means Talent WANTED to make stem cell research a criminal act.

I'm apalled I have to actually repeat something that is as clear as day. There is no need to lie. You don't need to join Rush Limbaugh in his smear campaign against others.

Berrysxx,

Thanks for the comment. It's the IF that Rush included in his statement that irks me. First Rush says he was wrong then he followed it up with an IF, that is very insincere if you ask me. You don't say IF when you truly believe you were wrong. IF is a qualifier that dilutes his statement and sincerity.

coker,

I think you need to check your i facts /i .

Rush said if Michael J. Fox really was shaking so bad then he wasn't taking his medication. Well, maybe he is trying to show us what this disease is really about. Thanks Rush, maybe you can stay off your meds and show us what your really like.

Thank you Ms. Couric for the class you and Mr. Fox showed in the interview. Mr. Fox has always been a decent man, and it is a shame to see the toll PD has taken on this fine man. Rush Limbaugh just cannot stand up as tall as you, Ms. Couric and Mr. Fox. Thank you very much!

My response is to Berrysxx. I'm not sure what your history is regarding a "probe inserted into the brain" but it's not what it appears to be. My father had this surgery and was fine for about six months. He's now in a wheelchair because he has major balance problems and can not speak so people can understand him. He's still has to take Parkinson's medication to prevent the tremors and dyskinesia just like before. So if you believe in stem cell research or not your probe in the brain is not the cure-all for this disease.

I have nothing but admiration for Michael J. Fox. The way he has handled his disease has been inspiring. To have to defend his actions to the overrated right wing intolerant small minded fear monger that is Rush Limbaugh is a sad commentary on the media and anyone who would listen to that madman's ranting. I hope Michael knows that those of us with independent thought believe in his cause and his being able to further it anyway he can.

Michael J. Fox said in the interview he supported Arlen Spector. I guess it takes a Republican like Spector to have such a serious illness for one to fully understand the importance of stem cell research. Perhaps more Republicans and or their family members need to fall victim to serious illnesses such as Parkinson's, paralysis, cancer, Alzheimers, etc. before they see the light on this moral/political issue. These IVF stem cells will otherwise be useless. Why not allow science labs put them to some use? My heart breaks for anyone who must suffer through anything such as Parkinsons. I was one of those teenage girls who did and still does have a crush on MJF. You are making a difference, Michael and I hope something comes from all of this in your lifetime.

Dear Katie,
Earlier this year i was told i might have parkinson's..thank god it turned out to be vertigo..bad, but no where near parkinson's...
When i thought that i had Parkinsons's i turned to Michaels web site! It gave me hope and helped me to understan how devastating it was. Well god spared me but i will never forget or let Michael down...Thanks for dedicating time to my most important issue! As far as Rush is concerned I think he's just looking for another 15 minutes f fame...more like shame.

Again Thanks

Michael J. Fox shows his zeal , with no apologies to the world, concerning stem cell research. I think that Rush Limbaugh has finally crossed over the line with his comments about Michael. Before using his public postition to make such assumptions concerning Michael's state of mind or medications and turning Michael's zeal into yet another POLITICAL issue, he should have spent a little time verifying his information.
Rush has always been appaulling and now he is unsurpassed in repugnant behavior.

If CBS would just report the news that matters, not these "interest" stories for supposed ratings, the American people would have been informed enough not to have let Bush LIE us into Iraq.

Let's see, Democrats have been running dirty ads most of my life......and now the Neo-Commies get upset when Republicans run a dirty ad ???

IT JUST PROVES MY BELIEF THAT:

LIBERALS DEFINE A DIRTY FIGHT AS ONE IN WHICH THEIR OPPONENT FIGHTS BACK.

...then liberals get outraged that conservatives would dare defend themselves against liberal attacks.

THE MAIN POINT:

The ad against Harold Ford is tame in comparison with manipulating a person sick with Parkinsons Disease

I think you are one of the most courageous wonderful people in this world. It breaks my heart to see such a vibrent person suffer such a crippling disease and you do it with the utmost grace and dignity. You are truly one of my super heros who stands firm on everything you believe in. You have been charmed since birth with a great focus on life and you have grabbed life by the twins(lol). I have admired you ever since you first stepped into the public's eye. RUSH has nothing on you! Please be well, you are in the conscience of America. I promis to vote for stem cell and all medical research for the betterment of life.

Democrats have been running dirty ads? Please, can we have more Republican projection? What nonsense.

Republicans can sense defeat and they're showing their true colors: nothing but loathsome opportunists, willing to sell the country to maintain their grip on power.

Are the Dems the answer? I don't know. But I do know the Republicans are disloyal and anti-American. Ashheap of history for the lot of them, starting with Bush.

I applaud Katie for admitting her father has Parkinson's - and that she has also contributed to Mike J Fox's organization following her interview with Mike J. Fox. It was noble of her to admit her bias regarding this issue and ultimately that the CBS news is no longer unbiased news casting - but political commentary.

If you are going to spend as much as a third of a prime time news case supporting a clear political position - the opposing side should have an equal segment of time to share their views. I will no doubt be looking for my news from an unbiased source elsewhere.

For the record - I watched as my Grandfather Died of Parkinson's disease. The ends to not always justify the means.

Respectfully submitted,

Jon

This was a fabulous, wonderful interview. The best part of all of it is the signs, personified in Ms Couric, that the news media is getting back to be willing to take know-nothing pundits like Limbaugh and hold them accountable for the things they say. This is *not* the same thing as editorialising, as the Fox piece was *just the facts*...something jokers like Limbaugh aren't obliged to do.

Their time has come, if the new anchor of CBS News is any indication, as this may be the beginning of a new golden era in broadcast news...when the likes of CBS Evening News had a positive effect on the state of the world.

Limbaugh has been exposed for the mean spirited radical that he is. You are to be honored forever, both of you for standing up for the simple respect that all us humans deserve. Anyway, maybe Linbaugh was himself over medicated with Oxycontin pills and was having a Rush when he made his not so unusual outrageous comment. LOL

See, the thing that's wrong here is that 3 of the 4 types of stem cells are medically productive and moral. The one type that has had no medical success and is amoral is fetal stem cells and this is the one that Mr. Fox chooses. All human life is precious, and innocence must be protected. It's a shame that mr. Fox chose to politicize this. It does leave him open for attack. I cannot believe that Mr. Fox couldn't have waited for a better moment to tape his commercial as he has done many other times. This does not in anyway detract from the unfortunate condition he is suffering from.

I appreciate all of these comments unfortunatly this fuzzy romanticism has nothing to do with the fact that it is inaprporate for the government to fund medical research such as this. We havea market economy in this country and all of the money that you spend on RX fund research that we use to create better medicine (which other countries then steal and use in thir "free" system (along w medical research tech).
On a separate note, are we to believe that no constraints what so ever are necessary when considering different types of stem cell research? This issue reminds me of the abortion issue in which any law or regulation that helps define abortion is viewed as an attack on abortion by liberals (for instance, can a woman get an abortion at 5 or 6 months?, should a child have to get permission from a parent and etc). What I am trying to communicate is that regulating a procedure or research teqhnique that effects human life does not necessariy autmoaticly mean that it is an "attack". Please take into consideration that these are very real issues with very large consequences for society. Yes,benefits from stem ell research would be great, but do you also understand the drawbacks or are you simply picking the side that doesn%u2019t include a political figure you despise? Please search out all sides of an issue..

When will the people who actually suffer from chronic diseases be listened to? Once you have struggled to keep a microphone on and/or not been able to recall your own name; then come back and say you don't support government funded stem cell research! If we, as a country, pay attention to being empathetic towards lives that already exist, then and only then will we move beyond polarizing fighting that helps nobody.

I have never responded to a forum such as this before. I was so shocked by Limbaugh's behavior & deeply moved by the interview, however, that I had to voice my feelings.

Michael J. Fox is a true gentleman. Who could blame him if he had struck back with revenge & bitterness? Instead he spoke about the cause he believes in with respect for those whose opinion differs from his own.

I've enjoyed Katie since she took over the anchor spot, but I'm even more convinced after this interview that she's got what it takes. She asked the "tough" questions with porfessionalism & compassion.

As for Limbaugh - How much lower can he sink? I for one will never know since I vow from this moment forward to never listen to him again.

This kind of research is EXACTLY the type that government should be involved in - in fact, basic scientific research that all can benefit from will be undersupplied if market mechanisms are relied on exclusively - due to the non-rival consumption of information (aka free rider problem).

I really don't get what all the breuhauhau is about. MJF made a powerful political ad and an opposing political pundit challenged it. Big deal.

The only good thing to come of it is we can now have a big, giant, hairsplitting debate on empbryonic stem cell research. A scientist made a comment last night on this site that it was in fact "cloning".

All I want is a cure for chronic diseases. It seems reasonable that if fertilized eggs from fertility clinics are going to be destroyed they might as well be donated to reasearch. Kind of like organ donation. If you're not creating them what's the big deal?

There is PLENTY of private money out there. It's not like we don't have more than our fair share of rich people in this country. And they are quite generous.

I hear the problem comes down to scientists not being able to use reasearch facilities that have ANY federal funding so they have to go build their new facilities with private funds.

Years ago Edward R. Murrow, under attack by Sen. Joseph McCarthy, said history would ultimately judge who had better served his country. Murrow said he'd like to be remembered by the answer.

Who's a better American, Rush Limbaugh or Michael J. Fox? We don't have to wait for history's judgement. Michael Fox, one-time entertainer, is a far better man than Limbaugh--a full-time entertainer and demogogue.

Please, sir. Do not lie. It does your position no good.

The reason that there is no medical success for stem cells is that research has been stymied on them.

Arguing against stem cell research by saying it has shown no success is circular.
