Former President Fernando de la Rua told Listin Diario that the hip-shaking international superstar and his son, Antonio, have talked about marriage and raising a family but have no immediate plans to tie the knot.
"They prefer to wait," de la Rua said. "Kids today would rather live as a couple; they don't believe that marriage is necessary to be happy."
Shakira and the president's son have been dating for five years.
De la Rua, in the Caribbean country for a conference, called his son's girlfriend "a lover of peace" who's concerned for those less fortunate than her.
"Shakira is a very good woman; she is very loving to her parents and with her in-laws as well," he added.

Cadena Ser and Radio Barcelona, co-sponsors of the 53-year-old awards, announced the 23 winners Wednesday afternoon. The Ondas honor outstanding individuals and organizations working in radio, advertising, television, film and music in both Spain and around the world.
An awards ceremony will be held Nov. 23 in Barcelona.
