That was the message Sens. Charles Schumer and Elizabeth Dole exchanged Sunday on CBS's Face The Nation. With less than three weeks until pivotal mid-term elections, the senators made a friendly wager on which party would control Congress.
Schumer, a New York Democrat, told Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer that up until a few months ago, he never would have thought Democrats could take power from Republicans. "We are right on the edge of taking back the Senate. It's not a done deal. It's hardly a certainty, but we are feeling very, very good," Schumer said.
To which Dole, North Carolina's senior Republican senator, extended her hand: "We're going to keep the majority in the United States Senate. And Chuck, I'll put a wager on that." The senators anted up a dinner, shared a laugh, then attacked each party's platform heading into the election.
Speaking about President Bush's weekend meetings with top military personnel on the direction of the Iraq war, Schumer quipped, "Today, they're all huddling in the White House talking about change. Then some spokesperson comes out and says, 'No, no, no, we're not talking about change.'
"They are just tied in a knot. And instead of listening to other voices, and — they're not," Schumer said.
As of this week, Democrats hold leads for four of the six Republican seats they need to capture the Senate and 10 of 15 needed to win the House, according to officials in both parties. Several additional races remain highly competitive.
Before shifting the discussion to the economy and healthcare, Dole responded to Schumer's charge, saying, "Adjustments have been made. Talk right now is of possible projections — you know, you have to adjust. You have to respond to the fact that the terrorists, they shift. They change. And of course you have to make changes."
President Bush, meanwhile, said he was not overly concerned with the Republicans losing power. "I've heard all the speculation and all the predictions. And I believe, if our candidates stick with security and tell the American people we've got the plan to protect this country against these terrorists who want to hit us, and talk about the economy, they'll do just fine," Mr. Bush said on ABC's "This Week."
The president said regardless of who controls Congress, he will press ahead with his agenda, which he said includes reauthorizing No Child Left Behind, achieving a comprehensive immigration bill and reviving his Social Security reforms.

- Schumer and the entire Democrat National Committee have to express to voters in all 50 states that it was the Republican(GOP)controlled senate that voted against raising minimum wage, failed to pass a flag-burning ban amendment and numerous other things, and then some GOP politicans now want to distance themselves from the president, like it is President Bush's fault alone that the GOP senate and house failed to pass or kill certain bills like the minimum wage bill, before it got to the president's desk, I even read how Trent Lott of Mississipi and Mr.Talent of Missouri, both stated that they voted against raising minimum wage, if this doesn't send a message to voters, I don't know what would.

- Be Ever Vigilant. Bush and Rove will do anything to stay in power up to an including flooding key districts with fake absentee ballots tampering with electronic voting machines, and bussing in voters who are not from the districts to vote, or even starting another war with and suspending civil liberties postponing the mid term vote. There is a great possibility for this administration to tamper with the electronic voting machines to the point that very subtle differences will take place in Key races just enough to tip the vote in their favor but not enough to cause a full scale American Revolution leaving some doubt, but just enough to throw key races in the Republican Favor. Watch out for this election coup.

- To everyone here let JaneMcCreev and Janem4 rant and rave. She obviously has not read the Washington Post or Times lately. They ran a story on the anger factor affecting the outcome of the elections, moderate republicans, independents and conservative democrats were abandoning the GOP for the democratic party. The arrticle was quite in depth and offered polls to support it.If those polls are correct and all the other polls then we will have a democratic sweep in both houses. She (McCreev)has never offered a single solution in any of her post besides vote Republican.Where was she when the IDIOT president of Iran was saying that Israel would disappear and a large number of posters were in agreeance with the Idiot. Here is the post Jane if you really are an American regardless of political affilation you will take these morons on.

- The Republican congress voted to cut Food Stamps and student financial aid, and voted against the minimum wage increase, and voted to give millionaires obscene tax breaks, including trying to create an American aristocracy by repealing the estate tax. The Republican party has stood against the middle and lower classes. Seems to me that the last time we had an increase in minimum wage was when Clinton was president. No wonder the Republicans have so much campaign money, the richest of the rich really want them to stay in power. If you're not rich, vote democrat so that the Republicans don't starve you and keep your children from going to college!

- The Dems have good chance and I hope they don't blow it. It's theirs to lose. Let's hope they have the balls to do what President Clinton did to Chris Wallace, take the lead and keep it. Wake up you Democrats in Congress and those running against Republicans. By the end of Bush's term the middle class will no longer exists.

- same-o, same-o. Dole learned the Bushie talking points well. of course, she stated if you vote Democratic you'll weaken the country and undo the tax cuts. so, now all the non-thinking neocon sheeple will run home yelling "the sky is falling, the sky is falling... vote Republican to hold the sky up". What BS.
Hey Lizzy, you can take your tax breaks and shove them where the sun don't shine. my whopping tax refund was a ONE TIME check for $208 dollars. whoopie! unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy my refund as Jane did hers because the month before my medical insurance went up $262 per month. so, my great refund barely paid for three weeks of my medical increase. and guess what. the increased medical premium is every month. month after month after month.
And Bill Gates. well, his refund amounts to more money EACH AND EVERY MONTH than I make in a year. some friggin tax break lady.
National Security. there are more friggin terrorists now than there ever was. At least Clinton was pursuing bin Laden during his watch. it's unfortunate he didn't nail him. but once Bushie was in, the pursuit stopped until 9-11. and once Iraq was started, pursuit stopped again. You don't see bin Ladens head on a stick anywhere, do you.?? thought not!!
The Republicans have been a total disaster since the Supreme Jerks annointed King George.
Vote the Republican bums out!!!
