(CBS/AP)  Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Friday that Israel no longer had any reason to exist and would soon disappear.

"This regime, thanks to God, has lost the reason for its existence," Ahmadinejad told a crowd of thousands gathered at a rally in support of the Palestinians in the capital Tehran.

"Efforts to stabilize this fake (Israeli) regime, by the grace of God, have completely failed... You should believe that this regime is disappearing," he said.

Ahmadinejad also called Israeli leaders a "group of terrorists" and threatened any country that supports the Jewish state, as millions of Iranians took to the streets for anti-Israel protests.

"You imposed a group of terrorists ... on the region," Ahmadinejad said, addressing the U.S. and its allies. "It is in your own interest to distance yourself from these criminals... This is an ultimatum. Don't complain tomorrow."

"Nations will take revenge," he told hundreds of thousands of supporters at a pro-Palestinian rally in the capital Tehran.

Ahmadinejad also called the U.N. Security Council "illegitimate," ahead of diplomats' planned circulation of a draft resolution on Iran next week.

Millions of Iranians took part in rallies held in every major city across Iran for "Al-Quds Day," the Arabic name for Jerusalem. Many became anti-American protests as well, criticizing U.S. support for Israel.

In 1981, the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini declared the last Friday of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan as "Al-Quds Day," a day of protest to show the importance of Jerusalem to Muslims. Jerusalem is the third holiest site in Islam after the Saudi Arabian cities of Mecca and Medina.

A banner in Tehran carried a quote from the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini: "Quds is part of Islam's body."

Protests were also planned in Egypt and Lebanon.

The frequent saber rattling by the Iranian president has raised growing concerns in Israel about Iran's nuclear program, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said this week that Iran would have to pay a price, hinting broadly that Israel might launch a pre-emptive strike against the nuclear facilities. Some analysts say the only way Israel could launch a successful strike against Iran's well-fortified facilities, is to use its own tactical nuclear weapons.

Iranians "have to be afraid" of the consequences of their intransigence," Olmert told reporters on his way home from Moscow. "They have to understand that if they object to every compromise, there will be a price to pay."

A draft U.N. resolution on Iran is expected to be introduced in the Security Council early next week, and diplomats have said they would seek limited sanctions on Tehran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment — a key process that can produce either fuel for a nuclear reactor or the material for a warhead.

On Friday, Ahmadinejad called the U.N. Security Council and its decisions "illegitimate" as long as it was dominated by the U.S. and Britain.

"What sort of Security Council is this? The whole world knows that the U.S. and Britain are enemies of the Iranian nation," he said.

The United States and Britain — along with France, Russia and China — have power to veto any Security Council measures.

"The time is over for such logic. Under such circumstances, the Security Council is illegitimate and its decisions are illegitimate," Ahmadinejad said, drawing chants of "Death to America" from the crowd.

Ahmadinejad has said the Nazis' slaughter of 6 million Jews during World War II was a myth, and that Israel should be wiped off the map or moved to Germany or the United States.

He warned Friday that the U.S. and other supporters of Israel were accomplices in Israeli attacks against Palestinians.

"Any crime committed (by Israel) today, any house demolished ... it will be the direct responsibility of the supporters of this (Israeli) regime ... This regime has nothing for you but loss," he said.

The leader of one of the world's most oil-rich countries claims they need a (peaceful) nuclear reactor. Almost all of the world (including Israel and most of the Arab world) supports a two-state compromise on the Palestinian issue. But the Iranian leader nakedly advocates genocide and mass destruction. So what do European leaders do, on the very site of the Holocaust a mere 2 generations ago? Wring their hands and debate sanctions, of course!

patriotic9 You just became a Hypocrite you are being racist yourself by saying you want Israel wiped of the earth too. Why don't you go live in Iran for a while and see how you like it there since you and the Iranian Pres. think alike.
Iran needs to be stopped in their idea of having Nukes because they won't stop at getting rid of just Israel. They want to control the world and have everyone turn to the Muslim religion. So patriotic9 be thankful Israel is there to help combat against people like the Pres. in iran or you may see yourself praising their God in the near future.

Forget the Europeans, they have lost sight of all reality, especially with the chickensh*t French leading them. Its going to get bad , real bad.

Olmert was right to go directly to the Russians. They hold the trump card in this standoff. They can refuse to develop the reactor and they can refuse to sell the Iranians fuel, and that, at the very least, could divert this crisis for some years to come. Provided enough time, moderate Iranians may find a way to take control of their fundamentalist government before it becomes a suicide bomber regime. Putin is no dummy, and I don't think he would make the mistake of interpreting Olmert's comments as a bluff. The problem here is that Russia's economy sank so low after dumping communism, with virtually no help from the West, that they may feel compelled to export this technology for badly needed funds. Russia would be cutting its own throat in the process, because Iran's emergence as a superpower in the Middle East would threaten Russia's relationship with the 25 million Muslims living in the former Soviet republics, who already look southward, not northward for leadership.

Whether any of your morons out there realize or not we need Israel. Israel is a strategic point for us, a good percentage of our citizens have duel citizenship with Israel, and a good friend to our country. The President of Iran is a madman and anyone who sides with him should go live in Iran and they'll soon discover what it is really like to live in a country ruled
by crazy people.

Forget the Europeans ? I don't understand what on earth mjv2944 is proposing. The Europeans are the US's biggest ally, not Israel. The French military is number 3 in the world (in funding, after China and of course the U.S.). Let's not be ridiculous. Anti-european sentiment is ridicoulus and gets us nowhere - the US still needs her allies, especially the one responsable for making her a country. (For those of you who don't know your history, the French dispensed the equivalent of billions of dollars, along with thousands of troops and their best generals, in order to fight for the Americans against the British in the American Revolution).

This guy is out of his mind !!! Isreal will hand him his *** on a platter within the next few months. He can blame no one except himself. Now he wants to claim to want nuclear energy to sell to the West at half price. Does he think that the world is dumb or what???? It won't be long before Fox or CBS is reporting that Isreali jets are in Iranian airspace on a mission to destroy their nuclear sites. That will shut him up.

I agree with peterbaldwin. Instead of mouthing off stupid and useless threats, which is no doubt what Bush will do, he should send Rice to Russia and China and tell them to put some pressure on Iran. Sanctions will only work as long as the UN puts up a united front. Right now, Bush has so alienated US allies that there is no united front.

This is what I was talking about yesterday. When Bush plays it the go it alone and does not give the UN FULL US support, Ahmadinejad can get away with saying what he wants because he knows that he can play China, Russia and the US against each other.

This is nothing but propaganda to rally Muslims to continue battling. Things are going badly in Iraq. N. Korea has tested a nuclear weapon. Ahmadinejad is adding his two cents worth to the bubbling international stew to keep things stirred up and to see if he can push Bush into doing something stupid.

Let us hope this idiot is just running his mouth and that Israel does not take pre-emptive strike.Either action by either country will bring about a broader war and the U.S. will not stay on the sidelines. These idiot has made comments like this before and nothing has happened. The timing of his comments are suspect.
Perhaps we should take out their nuclear reactors, negotations have failed to work.Sanctions will not either.I am not an advocate of War however in Irans case maybe they need to see what a mushroom cloud is in order to silence this kind of rhetoric. If Israel were to take pre-emptive actions it would only broaden the war on terror, whereas if we took them strategically it would silence his type. What a wonderful world we now live in after 6 years of Bush's failed policies.Flanked by N.Korea on side,a rise in violence in Iraq with security and peace being almost non existent,a resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and now this idiot.

To ZykraCosmos the Russian economy is in it's current state because they issued bonds bearing 30% yields with no time table on cashing them out.The hedge funds in the U.S and elswhere had a field day cashing these bonds in.It broke the bank literally. This happened around 98 and Russia has still not recovered.

Ahmadinejad's remarks are not the ravings of a mad man. Far from it. He is just saying out loud, albeit in a crude way, what many privately feel and think about the situation in the Middle East. For whatever reasons or rationale, no body wanted anything to do with the Jews. The Americans and the Europeans were reluctant to have them. Some Jews left for China and settled in Shanghai until the founding of the State of Isreal. The British and the allies then found it expedient to establish the State of Isreal by partioning Arab lands. Since then, the fighting has not stopped. For strategic reasons, America then supported Isreal unconditionally and the fighting intensified. Today, Isreal's presence is an extension of American interests. Isreal has nuclear weapons. Its military arsenal is supplied by the Americans. America supports and sponsors Isreali's aggression. There is not a single politician alive in Washington that dares to offend the Jewish lobby. Therein lies the problem! Isreal cannot do wrong in the eyes of American politicians or else...When Iran has the bomb, perhaps the threat of mutual annihilation in the Middle East is the best deterent.

Why it was justified to bring people from different European countries into Palestine afer WWII to occupy their land by force? Please don't give me answer from any religious text as I am a patriotic American who firmly beleives in the Constitution which forbids the involvement of religion into politics by separating CHURCH from STATE.
If we are loyal to USA,why shouldn't we care about the American interest which is based on OIL given to us by Arabs? Why should our tax money be used for killing those Arabs in support of those who don't do anything for us except causing HATRED,TERRORISM adn 9/11 against our nation and snatching our tax payed money.

The old "Israel Lobby" canard. While I deplore some of the actions that the more conservative groups in Israel have taken over the last 20 years let's not lose the fact that from the Straights of Gilbralter to the foothills of the Himalayas the only democratic state is Israel. All Arab (most muslim) states are either theocracies, "strong-man" single governments or feudal kingdoms with little in the way of modern civil rights an privileges. The problem with an Arab state having a nuclear device is that - unlike western states - the religions and cultural background appear to make them less likely to not use the weapon - the consequences are not unthinkable to someone like the president of Iran.

To patriotic9 you obviously have not read your bible or you would know that acceptance of Christ as your saviour makes you a Jew.A jew is not defined by place of birth,God told Abraham that he would be the father of many nations. If you read your bible you will see that only those who accept Christ are his children(jews).Israel for the most part thinks like the Muslims in regards to Christ. They see him as a phrophet not as the saviour.I am making this short because to go into biblica quotes to prove this would require hours of typing and far more than the 1500 words allocated here.It would take up several pages of post.So carefully read your bible.

The constitution of our country gives freedom of religion to every citizen whether they christians, jews, muslims, budhist, hindu, etc. The thing which is not allowed by our constitution is the involvement of religion into politics. Those who don't believe in the constitution of our country which separates church from states have caused problems for our nation like nobody else has ever caused. If GOD has chosen NON-AMERICAN EUROPEAN INVADERS IN PALESTINE because of the race they are born in and promised them land in the MIDDLE EAST,whereas NEGLECTED AMERICANS becasue of the race they are born in and not promised them a single penny, this is a RACIAL DISCRIMINATION against the people of USA which can only be tolerated by enemies of USA but not by a loyal patriotic American.

The President of Iran just gave Americans an ultimatum. The ball is in our court. A few weeks back he came to New York City sounding like Mr. Rogers and telling Americans that Iran loved everybody--Jews, Christians, everybody.

I don't know how my fellow Americans feel, but I don't take ultimatums from snakes lightly. Iran is looking for trouble, and it just found it in the heart of one little piece of their " great satan".

The same types of comments led Manuel Noriega to an American invasion, and a Florida Prison. At the core, the fact that Iran may be exponentially more powerful than Panama does not matter. What matters is if we can answer the affirmative to the national anthem's core question.

What is the alternative? To let our enemies grow in strength as we grow in fear?

"If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for War."

When we act like children the results are childish, The higher road, killing is always wrong no matter what even in the name of God.

We need a new anwser for this problem, I suggest we step back slowly, contain the spread and wait for them, they will destroy one another first...we should not lower ourself to that position.

If we are attacked,(again) there should be no restraint the full force and resolve of U. S. ... When we are ready to do what needs to be done then there will be no doubt, no fear, just destruction and death.

We are wasting time and effort in an area that has been unresolved for thousands of years.

Ahmadinejad and company needs to be warned, then fixed.

Isreal should release all of it's citizens in jail as a suicide sniper special ops group to take this guy out.

How many groups on Isreal's side have used terrorist like activities against Iran?
I don't mean their military.

The answer is probably zero.
Why is that?

Iraq would be a good spot for the special ops suicide mission to enter into Iran and take him out. Border there seems pores.
After all they keep sending Iranians into Iraq to cause problems, why can't we do the same?
The best part is it is deniable.
Isreal should resort to the same tactics Iran and the terrorist use against them.
Because it's about time.
And they can deny any knowledge, because the people involved would be crazy's on a suicide mission.
Just like the terrorists.

So where in Ahmadinejad's comments does it say Israel is going to "disappear"?

He says the Israel regime is "disappearing" which could mean the government is dissolving, or Israel is losing power, etc.

The headline implies that his comments mean Iran is going to make Israel disappear - presumably with the nuclear weapons Bush insists they are building. But Ahmadinejad didn't say that.

Why is CBS News again shilling for war?

To patriotic9 People of Israeli descent lived in what once was called Palenstine alongside Palenstians for thousands of years.Israel was originally a city that became a nation only to be destroyed and taken over by Palenstians.Do a google on Palestian history and if you recall Abraham was of Arab descent. In 1949 Israel was offically formed as the home of Israelies. There were then and now areas of land that originally belonged to the Palestians. This has never been seriously disputed.Even the Israelis are willing to give them back and have given back a great portion of it.So do not align me with your thinking. The crisis that recently occured in Palestine and Lebanon are the results of extremist on both sides.Read the bible.

There is more honor in meeting Iranians on their home turf at twiththe clash of sword and gunpowder.

Nothing like reading the thoughts of incredibly myopic fools who seem to think they understand the issues at play, but cannot support their ignorant comments with anything displaying even the slightest foundational base of knowledge on the subject matter! Thinking you are correct when You cannot even substantiate your claims with facts and evidence is ignorance of the highest order, and makes your opinion entirely worthless. On issues that are as incredibly nuanced and complex as the war on terror, it takes a clear and definable argument that is backed with more than slurs and insults to make your "theories" even remotely viable. Some people here clearly need to book a flight on the next space shuttle or Soyuz rocket and have it drop them off up on planet Alec-Baldwinia with the rest of the fools who form hard and fast opinions without being able to support them at all. Ignorance most certainly is not bliss, and if one can't back up a point of view with anything other than a pathetic slur, then they need to go back to school and do some deep research on the subject matter if they want to have the slightest hope of ever being taken seriously.

He is perfectly right because now, U.S is no more that old U.S with some hold on countries. We have been wasting our soldies, money and any resources in Iraq. Our soldiers from Iraq had better been sent and deployed to Iran.
I agree the gentleman Ahmedine. We are responsible for what we have been doing. Just crying against rouge states and shouting on why they say anything will not solve the issue. We needs to only watch the drama untill they nuke our countries.
Still our hero says that time isnt suitable to leave from Iraq. huh. Only Jesus will save us.
