Politics can be a strange and dirty business. Check out some of the biggest missteps and mishaps in recent history.

(CBS/AP)  Jeanine Pirro, the GOP candidate for state Attorney General, and former New York City Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik are suspected of plotting to illegally bug Pirro's husband, a real estate developer whom Pirro believed was cheating on her.

The scandal has rocked New York politics. The New York City tabloids are already having a field day with the story. "PIRRO LOVE BUG," shouted the New York Post. "BUG THIS LOVE BOAT!" screamed the Daily News.

Pirro suspected her husband, Albert Pirro, of having an affair and contacted Kerik, now a private security consultant, in the middle of 2005 to discuss possibly placing a tape recorder on a boat owned by the couple.

What neither Pirro nor Kerik knew was that their conversations were being tape recorded by the Bronx district attorney's office, which was conducting an unrelated investigation of Kerik. The tapes were turned over to federal authorities, who began their own investigation into the bugging scheme.

Pirro, seeking to become the state's first female attorney general, said she was told of the investigation by FBI agents last week. She held a news conference Wednesday to proclaim her innocence.

"Sometime last year, I came to believe that my husband was seeing another woman. I was angry and had him followed to see if what I suspected was true," she said in the statement. "Although I spoke about taping him, there was no wiretapping by me of anyone. There was anger and frustration, and nothing more."

Husband Albert Pirro is a millionaire lobbyist who served 11 months in federal prison after being convicted on tax fraud charges in 2000. He also embarrassed his wife by fathering an illegitimate daughter after they were married.

Kerik also has a troubled past. President Bush nominated Kerik to become the chief of the Homeland Security Department, but a series of embarrassing disclosures torpedoed his candidacy.

There were reports that during his 18-month tenure as police commissioner he had simultaneous extramarital affairs with two women, including the publisher of his memoir. The reported affairs took place in a luxury apartment overlooking the ruins of the World Trade Center.

And Kerik pleaded guilty three months ago to accepting tens of thousands of dollars in gifts from a New Jersey firm accused of having mob connections. He was a close confidante of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, but left Giuliani's business, Giuliani Partners, after withdrawing as Mr. Bush's Homeland Security nominee.

Kerik lawyer Joseph Tacopina confirmed Kerik's role in the matter but said he had become involved through a long friendship with Pirro.

"Bernie spoke to a friend in distress regarding a domestic issue," Tacopina said. "Nothing illegal was said, and nothing illegal was done."

Pirro faces former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo in the attorney general's race. A Siena College poll released last week showed her trailing Cuomo, 53 percent to 36 percent.

IMHO I don't see what would be "illegal" about it; FINE lookin gal just wanted to find out whats going on on the boat, which is just as much her's. But then again, that's New York. I had a "tap" on MY home phone 23 year's ago; the wife got caught, & I still have the tape's. Law's. Bite me.

Oh brother - she should've just turned his butt into that show "Cheaters" - that would serve him right. Married couples waste so much time on stuff like this; if someone is cheating on you - LEAVE HIM/HER - they're not worth your time and energy. No wonder i'm single.

I FEEL SORRY FOR HER...

SHE IS MARRIED TO A ***...

COMMON SENSE WOULD BE TO DIVORSE THIS JERK. I SUSPECT SHE WILL NOW.

WHILE IT APPEARS THE ALREADY DOOMED RACE IS GONE NOW...I HOPE SHE GETS A DIVORCEE AND A GREAT SETTLEMENT AND A CAREER. WHY WASTE YOUR TIME IN NEW YORK POLITICS.

ANOTHER SAD THING IS KERIK WOULD HAVE BEEN A FANRTASTIC HOMELAND SECURITY GUY...IF ONLY HE HAD HIS PERSONAL LIFE UNDER CONTROL...NOW PERRO NEEDS TO GET HERS UNDER CONTROL...

I HOPE SHE DOES NOT GET INTO ANY LEGAL TROUBLE OVER HER PRIVATE CONVERSATION...HOW UNLUCKY CAN YOU GET...SHE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER...SHE IS A TOP LAWYER AND A CANDIDATE FOR THE TOP NY LEGAL SLOT...

I could understand this happening if she were gaining information that matters to the public. She wasn't, she was trying to catch her husband having an affair. So What, spouses do it all the time. I do not care about a politcians love life, what they do for the people is all that matters.

Don't bother attributing it to political persuasions. This kind of immorality and corruption cuts across all political lines. It is a disease of those who lust for power, wealth, and the other lusts.

Like F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft, where we are hard, cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand."
