David Evangelista Shows How To Get Do's From N.Y.'s Fashion Week

(CBS)  If you want the clothes models were wearing on the runways during New York's recent Fashion Week, you'll have to wait months until the new styles appear in stores for spring.

But if you want Fashion Week hairdos, you can recreate them right now.

On Monday, The Early Show's stylist to the stars, David Evanglista, showed how to get the hottest ones: straight hair, a bun, and a slick "half-up 'do."

But before that, Evangelista discussed a few general trends.

First, big hair is over and out.

Hair on the runways could be summed up with three words: sleek, slick, and straight.

Evangelista told co-anchor Hannah Storm, "The whole mood of Fashion Week was ... feminine and girly. It was really, really soft. Things were less structured, looser, more carefree and more whimsical."

TREND #1: STRAIGHT HAIR (INSPIRED BY THE DIANE VON FURSTENBERG SPRING 2007 MODELS)

First, prepare hair accordingly by coating with a straightening balm. Tip: Comb the balm through your hair to disperse the product evenly. Next, section hair into half-inch sections, using hair clips to keep things clean and sectioned off well. Using a paddle, Mason Pearson or boar bristle brush, blow-dry hair with a dryer with the nozzle on, with air pointed down on the cuticle. After hair is blown out, place a middle or side part. Finish with a serum or shine spray.

TREND #2: BALLERINA KNOT (INSPIRED BY THE MODELS AT THE MICHAEL KORS SPRING 2007 SHOW)

To get this look, work with hair that's already dry. Evangelista even says, "Hair that has not been shampooed for a day is great to work with for this look." Create texture in the hair by using a curling iron, rollers, crimper, etc., to "rough up" the hair a little bit. Next, pull hair into high ponytail that sits just below the crown of the head, using a Mason Pearson brush. Secure the ponytail with a snag-free elastic band. A tip: Before securing the ponytail, spray hair with hairspray to give it some hold. Take the hair that has been "ponytailed" and twist and turn, so hair is twined up. Then, take care and start wrapping the twisted hair at the base and build into a bun. Finally, secure with hair pins, not bobby pins, which will slip; hair pins keep the bun tight and in place all day.

TREND #3: HALF-UP 'DO (INSPIRED BY THE MODELS AT DONNA KARAN'S SPRING 2007 SHOW)

Starting with dry hair, prep hair with a little volumizer at the roots, and use a blow dryer to "activate" the volumizer and give a little texture to the hair. Next, smooth with Mason Pearson or boar bristle brush. Pull back two sections of hair from either side of the crown of the head and pin back low, at the occipital bone on the head — the area basically right below the middle of the head. To do that, use bobby pins, crisscrossing them to secure hair in place. "Figure out before you pin hair back whether you want a middle part or hair to go straight back," David advises. Next, take the right side of hair that has been left out, and connect to the middle of the hair that has been crisscrossed, using a bobby pin to secure. Then, take the left side of hair that has been left out and use a hair pin to secure. A tip: Pin the hair in a upward direction; this will lock the hair in more tightly. Finish with a hairspray.
