(AP)  U.S. retail gas prices dropped nearly 24 cents a gallon in the past two weeks, the third consecutive decline since a mid-August peak, according to a survey Sunday.

The national average for self-serve regular was about $2.42 on Sept. 22, down from about $2.65 two weeks earlier, according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations across the country.

Mid-grade prices averaged $2.53 a gallon, while premium cost $2.64.

Gas prices peaked Aug. 11 at $3.02 and have dropped about 60 cents since that time.

The lowest average price in the survey was notched in Des Moines, Iowa — $2.07 a gallon for regular.

The highest was in Honolulu, at $3.03.

Among California cities surveyed, the highest average price for regular was $2.76 a gallon in Los Angeles. The lowest was in Bakersfield, at $2.62 a gallon.

The average for self-serve regular in California was about $2.72, down from $2.92, or 20 cents, from two weeks earlier, the survey found.

Hard to trust a survey that thinks Honolulu has the highest gas price. Did anybody check is Santa Barbara. It is still $3.19 in places. I'm sure Montecito, CA is higher yet.

I can't wait to see if the sick Republican government will try to use this drop in prices as a way of getting re-elected. If you are a smart American, you already know that they will try. I'm sure that if you vote Republican in November and they stay the majority, that prices will again sky-rocket after the new year. Keep gas prices going down by voting anything but Republican this November.

Also, watch out for the Republicans as they try to move your attention away from the Iraq war and the so-called War on Terror before the elections. How are they going to do it - BY BLAMING DEMOCRATS FOR HIGH TAXES! What one has to do with another I do not know yet, but it will be interesting to see what our illiterate President is told to spew forth to the American public by the Republican National Committee.

You know its funny. When gas prices are high who do you liberals blame. Huh?...........Thats right, you know the answer to that. Now prices are going down but does Bush get any credit for that? I am going on record and saying it, Thank you Mr President for helping to give us some releif at the pumps as we are going into the Christmas season!

Wake up!!! This is just another political ploy. And it involves Dems and Republicans. These characters are running scared, and they should be. After the election, they take care of big oil as usual. Kinda funny that the Alaskan pipeline is still down, but doesn't seem to effect the price of gas. The President doesn't deserve a thank you for this, he and his co-conspirators were part of the high prices and huge profits. Just wait, you'll see, we will get screwed again. VOTE OUT all the incumbents. They don't deserve to serve this great country.

When gas hits .99 cents a gallon we can all start feeling some relief. It must come to this in order foer our society to continue to grow. Let's tap the wasted space of Alaska and the ocean. Nature that most people will never see is not worth $2-$3 dollars a gallon at the pump.

Is there any explanation as to why the price being put up in the picture is $1.49? Yet the picture is labeled as being in Philadelphia on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006? (The lowest price quoted in the article is $2.07 in Iowa.)

FYI, the picture of the $1.49 gas price was a dealer in Phila, that will be closing his station soon. He was protesting the high gas prices by selling 5000 gallons for $1.49
One shot deal, needless to say was quite a line waiting.

Just in time for November. The oil companies have make a killing for the last 5 years - and they want to keep the Republicans in office so this will continue. Bush and Cheney are oil men, and the Republican party is the oil industry party.

Vote Republican in November and you're voting for $4.00 gas in 2007. Will a Democratic congress do the same? Hard to say, but at least we'll have a fighting chance.

It's really that simple.

It seems the public knows what the "real deal" on the prices is.

Let see where the prices are at the end of November. What will be the "excuse of the week" then when gas prices go back up?

Now that heating season is just around the corner, the "energy companies" realize that they have leave at least a dollar in your pocket so they can squeeze you to death on those prices as well.

Vote Republican and be prepared to bend over again next year.

Excuse me, but how do you know that nobody ever sees it? Not to mention how selfish you're being. Think of it this way, if some other race came here and decided that we could just be ran off and killed so that they could get something cheaper for them. How would you feel about it?

Can anyone check to see if the price drops every 2 years around election time? Is there a pattern of lower prices each time there is an election? Even if the Republicans don't directly influence prices, there business friends could, if they stock up and don't buy for a week or longer, prices would drop. They already made billions so the loss would equal out over time. Payback to give the people a better feeling when it's time to vote. Ask how much the government makes on oil taxes? It's billions if not trillions.
Motivation? The pattern of buying and prices will tell.
