For more than 60 years, the United Nations has struggled to forge peace, end poverty and heal the world.

(CBS/AP)  Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took his verbal battle with the United States to the floor of the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, calling U.S. President George W. Bush "the devil" and denouncing what he said was U.S. imperialism.

The impassioned speech by Chavez, a leftist and one of Mr. Bush's staunchest critics, came a day after the U.S. president and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sparred over Tehran's disputed nuclear program but managed to avoid a personal encounter.

"The devil came here yesterday," Chavez said, referring to Mr. Bush's address on Tuesday and making the sign of the cross. "He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world."

The leftist leader, who has joined Iran and Cuba in opposing U.S. influence, accused Washington of "domination, exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world."

"We appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our head," he said.

Wednesday marked the first time a U.S. President has ever been attacked on the floor of the United Nations. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev threatened the West in 1960, but he didn't personally attack President Eisenhower, reports CBS News national correspondent Byron Pitts.

"Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is rapidly becoming the new Fidel Castro, but with petro-dollars, at the U.N.," said CBS News Foreign Affairs Analyst Pamela Falk, "and as a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council in October, his anti-Bush comments are making him increasingly popular with member states in his campaign for that position."

Chavez's diatribe reflected the difficulty Mr. Bush faces in his key mission at the U.N. — convincing a largely skeptical world audience that his administration's fight against terrorism was not one targeting Muslims.

The main U.S. seat in the assembly hall was empty as Chavez spoke. But there was a "junior note taker" there, as is customary "when governments like that speak," the U.S. ambassador to the U.N said.

Mr. Chavez's remarks were merely intended to create a stir, gain notority for himself on the world stage, and impress his electorate at home.

But I still can't argue with his conclusions.....

Chavez aside..if it walks like the devil...talks like the devil..well you get my point. The smell of sulfur is ripe in the areas of poverty, healthcare, as well as the (yawn) [in monotone voice] War on Terror. Bush is nothing but a failed Texas businessman, with a limp ten gallon hat and his daddys cowboy boots. He is wearing HIS war as a badge..or one of those belt buckles he sports. The guy is a joke, he does not represent religion or the majority public opinion. If he wants to protect our country..it would be much smarter if he focused on securing our borders.

Its fashion today that if you disagree with some one, you call him devil or evil! same is the attitude of Mr. Bush.
Why we need to put an ear to what Bush, Chavez or others say? they are all devils/evils.
We only need to live in peace and have our pockets full. Who give spare time to whatever rubbish they speak?

Same garbage from yet another dictator. It's like they compared notes at the non-aligned countries meeting recently...

27 nations enforcing U.N. sanctions is not Imperialism, Chavez! Being first responders to the world's crisis with financial aid and food and shelter is not Imperialism, Chavez! What morons do you take us for?

And what idiot would choose to believe any propaganda that falls from his fat mouth?

If any Americans love Chavez, or believe the outlandish lies that he regurgitates, they should move down to Venezuela and live under his regime.

I bet it would cure even the most hardened left-minded of their mental illness (Liberalism).

Although extremely inflammatory, Hugo Chavez does have a perspective from the outside looking into the USA. We are the most powerful world power. The top of the heap is and can be considered the King of the World (Hill), or owner of all.

How we perceive ourselves has been highly righteous. Look at American History, the concept of Manifest Destiny, we were justified by God. The concept of a Jihad is much the same except the foreign sects are much stronger than the American Indians due to disease protection etc. Land vs. Oil%u2026Is there a difference?

Look at you Americans. Dont you see what you're starting here?? YOu dont fight the world's Abusive Super Power, by saying how lovely NYC is. YOu fight fire with whatever means u have thats close to it. Do you not see the world building up against us here in the west? Yet we still choose to be arrogant and back those idiots in the Whitehouse, and their selfish persuit of oil and ammo profits to which we see none of. If we were just in our cause, we would never fall. However instead of admitting to our wrongs that we've done, we're pulling a Republican move and denying we have any wrong doing. And that my fellow Westerners will be the demise and fall of our great Empire.

Let me remind some of you about one of the interesting things about the United States, it's called FREEDOM, i.e. you can BELIEVE Chavez, LOVE Chavez, and say anything you want to about Chavez, or Bush for that matter, and contine to LIVE HERE ... it's called Freedom of Speech. Those who advocate that others pack up and leave the United States because they have an opinion that differs from their own or that of the current administration seem to have missed a salient point of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Wow. Who put up these comments? I agree...how DO some people come to run countries? It is scary when someone expresses disdain for our president. Not because they are a threat in any way, but because the consequences of implying that the emporer wears no clothes can invoke such verbal disdain.

I liked it better when America had the reputation as "the good guys" who were the most powerful so that they can keep the world safe.

Today the face of America (right or wrong) invokes a different response from world leaders as well as some local viewers.

Personally, I think it's time for a new face.

To all those who speak against Mr. Chavez:
Its human nature to go against some one who does different from others. Since we are all use to of listening to Mr. Bush often declaring other people to be evil, he has the only right to tell us what he thinks about any president. Hence its shocking for us that Mr. Bush is called devil by Chavez and Ahmedinejad! is Bush really devil? whats your opinion? I dont think he is devil! in fact Mr. Bush is an angel on planet earth.

This character is imitating Mussolini but he is no Mussolini. Mommy's boy like Mussolini. So is the President of Iran. This is something these characters have in common. They are Mommy's boys and are having tantrums since they are not getting their way from Papa America. I have noticed these guys and others from the past are stupid. Hugo also reminds me of Qadafi from Libya. Now that man was stupid. So was Arafat. Muslims do have a tendency to be Mommy's boys. Hugo is not Muslim but he is a Mommy's boy. So are liberal males in America and Europe.

"Death to Chavez
How's that for First Amendment Free Speech?"

Its just fine.

For making out a cogent, logical argument, its really weak.

What you also don't realize is that the more you come up with chants like "death to Chavez," the more you play into his hands. He wants the world to believe that we are out to kill him, remember? Nice job, One_American!

Bush made a big blunder in removing Saddam and we are paying for this stupid action. However, the Senators in order to keep their elected jobs in Washington, gave Bush the green light. I can understand the Republican senators voting for war but the Democratic liberals in Washington had no backbone to stand for what was right. They sold America's wealth and military for their seats in Congress. Now they coming out of the closets acting as if they gave Bush a difficult time during his quest to attack Iraq. Point is, outside of the political correct rhetoric of our senators in Washington, they are very much like Hugo.

He's just a very homely looking idiot with delusions of grander. Bush has shown to have similar characteristics but he is far better and right about freedom, democracy and has backbone. We were successful in Iraq but he let the Iraqi military go astray not realizing they would become insurgents. Delaying the inevitable attack on Iran. Iran needed to be repaired since 1980. It has been broken for over 25 years and look at the mess it continues to make. Hopefully, Bush will destroy all of the nuclear facilities the Russian helped build in Iran. Remember: Russia, as in the past has been dirtying the pond. Always throwing a monkey wrench. Only Bush can fix things since he is not afraid of the Liberals usual whinnying or is he?

HE THINKS HIS TIRD WORLD COUNTRY IS BETTER THAN OURS, that his little venuzaela has is right, and we in america have it all wrong. HEY CHAVEZ WHY DONT YOU GRANT THE RIGHT OF FREE SPEECH, THAT YOU SO FREELY EXCERIZED AT THE UN TO YOUR PEOPLE? BECAUSE YOU CAN DISH IT OUT BUT YOU CANT TAKE IT. AND since your country is so much better than America go back to your country and control your illeagal immigration problem. Chavez is saying exactly what a lot of Americans are thinking, how 40% of this country can still state that this president and his cohorts are the all being all knowing coming of the second Christ makes me wonder exactly how many of them are deaf and dumb. But then this is the same country that elected Nixon and let him run rough shod over the country. Except Bush hides behind the bible and of course since GOD speaks directly to him there are those on the right that think he must be the second coming. When the President of the U.S. states that anyone who doesn't think like he does is confused, supporting terrorism, unpatriotic, supporting Hollywood types, doesn't have morals or family values makes me want to throw up. This guy has never had to earn a living on his own in his life, Karl Rove should have been included in Chavez's line as well as Cheney, Rice and Rummy.
Is Chavez a good guy, who knows, his own people will have to decide that, but I do believe he is stating what a lot of other leaders would like to state but because of monetary reasons will not. They need the bucks from the U.S. America found its soul on 9-11-2001 and came together like never before, the entire world came together and supported us. We lost our sole on the day we invaded IRAQ and haven't found it since. Thanks Fed up in Idaho

If Bush is the Devil than why did we allow him to come to the United States.

I say put Chavez's head on a stick and mount on the white house lawn than we'll see what the devils of the world have to say. I'll bet they will keep their mouths shut like Kadaffi.

Wake up America. For the last fifty plus years, war-mongers have controlled our government and lives. Billions a week spent in the middle east on war and katrina victims fight in court for a piece of what they lost, but Larry Goldstein gets 4 billion for the WTC insurance policy. Get rid of these liars and elect a non-political party affiliate who is not a millionaire or billionaire with extra special interests. Elect one of you who can return us to the democratic republic and do what Chavez is doing. Using oil money to give free heathcare, hospitals and education that is not controlled by the Rockerfellers. Stop the future police state and destruction to our "Free" world.

I think Chavez was right that the UN should be moved, but I was thinking inside a volcano, or to antartica. Kofi Annan should be tried for war crimes, Chavez should be handed over to the muslim mobs who hate the pope so they can rip him limb from limb. Chavez will then see how right those he supports are, being catholic, and all.
