Huge Recall Of Similac Baby Formula

Abbott Recalling About 300,000 Bottles That May Lose Vitamin C Over Time

  •  (CBS)

(AP)  The Abbott health care company is recalling hundreds of thousands of bottles of infant formula distributed nationwide because they might not have enough vitamin C.

The recall is for approximately 100,000 32-ounce plastic bottles of Similac Alimentum Advance liquid formula and approximately 200,000 bottles of Similac Advance with Iron, Abbott spokeswoman Tracey Noe said Friday.

The bottles, distributed by Abbott's Ross Products division, are missing a special layer that keeps air out of the bottle, Noe said. When the oxygen enters the bottle, it causes the level of vitamin C to decrease over time, she said.

If infants drink formula without enough vitamin C for two to four weeks, they could start exhibiting symptoms of vitamin C deficiency, which include irritability with generalized tenderness, the company said in a release. So far, Abbott has received no medical complaints.

The Similac Alimentum Advance has stock code 57512, lot number 401895V and use-by 1 May 2007 printed on the back of the bottle; the Similac Advance with Iron has stock code 55961, lot numbers 40177RH or 40172RH and use-by 1 November 2007. Some of the bottles may have been included in Similac Advance Hospital Discharge Kits — stock code 58986 and lot number 41699D5 are printed on the back of the bear tag attached to the kit.

Abbott, formerly known as Abbott Laboratories, is based in suburban Chicago.

Consumers with questions can contact Abbott's Ross Products division at 800-624-3412.

I am a new mother and unfortunately I tried to breastfeed but was only able to produce for one month. My son did not latch on and it was very stressful for both me and him when I tried to feed. I ended up formula feeding my child and I am ok with that decision. I don't think the argument should be about breast milk vs formula because there are women that can not produce enough or any at all. And, conversations like this make them feel like inadequate parents. The argument should be about making sure that child is fed and nurtured... the wellbeing of the child. I have 3 sisters who has 3 children each and out of the 9 five were formula fed and only 1 really was a little over weight but is now just as lean as his cousins. This should be looked at on a case by case situation because each family is different.

GET A LIFE.

The bottle formula only lasts 1 day. Anybody who bought a weeks supply or more is stupid. At least it is not killing anyone.

INFANTS SHOULD NOT HAVE ADDED IRON...CAN BE TOXIC.

Great! I've been over weight my entire life because my mother had inverted nipples... Make sense?

I don't think so.

With people thinking that being breast fed has things to do with IQ and temperament, I can't WAIT until the first defense attorney gets of a serial killer with... but he wasn't breast fed defence...

My son was breast fead for three months... I did it to bond... But honestly, when he's a teen he'll still rebel, and most likely want a tatoo, orange hair, and a piercing, and then bring home a girlfriend who I'm going to hate.

I personal was a breastfeed baby, I have a wieght problem and allergies. I also developed a skin problem when I entered my 20's. I may be the exception?? who really knows. but why bash either one. you as a mother have to make the best choice for your self and your baby. My son is a healthy happy boy who was formula feed.

So if breast fed babies are brats what are fromula fed babies? Perfect little angels? Before you make a comment like that why don't you take a look at what the parent may have done wrong in raising that child rather then assuming it was because that child was breast fed. Because I can tell you now that IT WAS NOT THE BREAST MILK THAT DID IT, IT WAS THE PARENT THAT DID IT. BREAST MILK IS BEST ALWAYS HAS BEEN ALWAYS WILL BE!

It certainly makes intuitive sense that breastmilk must be better for your child than formula; however, from the last remaining formula mom's in my own world of Mom's, I have to say that my children have no allergies, have no weight problems, have only had two colds, and test to be quite intelligent. I made the choice to formula feed after reviewing every medical report I could find that compared breast milk to formula fed children in the U.S. (available at the time through AMA or AAP's journals). I'm still comfortable with my decision. I support the women who choose to breastfeed, and I understand and support the women who don't.

Breast-fed babies do not 'grow up to be' ANYTHING other than what the parents' guidance leads them towards.

I've got 2 children (18 and 15) --one formula-fed, the other breastfed.

I'm also a nurse (before a huge riot ensues over what I'm about to say)

My 'formula-fed child' has a weight problem, skin problems and was bothered with allergies throughout his childhood.

My breast-fed child is lean, has no allergies, and no skin problems.

Asided from all of this, it's a KNOWN fact that breast milk is 'genetically formatted' for human babies...with the exact ratio of nutrients that they need.---You'll never find a baby 'allergic to breast milk'

Pick up a book on the subject, ask a pediatrician or OB/GYN...or a Lactation Consultant or La Leche League member.

Pick your battles, people. Show some common sense, too , while you're at it.
