Glamour's Best 'Dos' And 'Don'ts'

Fashion Tips Compiled In New Book, And Discussed By Expert

(CBS)  The "Dos and Don'ts' page is probably Glamour magazine's best-known feature.

Every month, readers go right to the section, hoping they're not guilty of wearing one of the fashion disasters caught by the camera.

Now, Glamour's editors have put photos of the best and worst outfits in a new book, "Glamour's Big Book of Dos and Don'ts."

On The Early Show Tuesday, Suze Yalof Schwartz, Glamour's executive fashion editor at large, discussed some of the most noteworthy trends that pertain to today's outfits.

The "Dos and Don'ts" page isn't just about looking at horrible outfits and good ones, she said — it's also about giving great fashion and style tips.

"We're trying to be very positive," Schwartz told co-anchor Rene Syler. "We've all been 'don'ts' in our lives, and the moral of the story is, it doesn't matter whether you're a size 2, or a size 28: You can be a Glamour 'do.' Even very wealthy people can dress very tacky, and we show you that," too.

FASHION DON'TS

Wearing clothes that are too baggy: Schwartz feels people of all sizes are being swallowed up by their clothes, and that people should wear clothes that give them more definition.

Wearing clothes that are too tight: This is the flipside of No. 1. You should wear clothes that fit you properly, which doesn't mean that they're skin-tight. In fact, skin-tight clothes can give women lumps and bumps in places they may not even really have problems. It can also give you the dreaded "muffin-top" look, in which love handles spill over low-rise jeans.

Wearing clothes that are too casual: Casual doesn't mean sloppy. Casual doesn't mean ill-fitting or ill-matched.

FASHION DOS

Layering: Layering with long sweaters is a key look this season. The trick to carrying off the look and not getting lost in a sea of cashmere is to pair your oversize pieces with smaller, sleeker items. Pairing a big sweater with skinny jeans and tight, knee-length boots balances the look.

Long-sleeved dresses: The shirt-dress is the biggest trend of the season. What makes this one so important is the colorful pattern that carries it from summer right into fall. The look is effortless and incredibly chic. The perfect strappy gold heels take the look from day to night.

The coat: If you invest in one piece of clothing for the fall, make it a coat. Some of the most beautiful this season are shimmery metallic, or dark textured coats that are statement enough to be worn with little more than heels. A great bag and a pair of elbow-length gloves make it high fashion. With a jacket this fabulous, who cares what's underneath?
