Cruise Says 'Sorry' To Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields says that Tom Cruise has apologized for publicly criticizing her use of antidepressants.

The 41-year-old actress says Cruise apologized in person Thursday.

"He came over to my house, and he gave me a heartfelt apology," Shields said Friday during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." "And he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened.

"And through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was. And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."

Cruise's spokesman confirmed the two celebrities had made up.

"It is true that his friendship with Ms. Shields has been mended," Cruise's spokesman, Arnold Robinson said in a statement. "He has not changed his position about antidepressants, which as evidenced by the black label warnings issued by the FDA on these types of drugs, are unhealthy."

Cruise and Shields had a public beef last year after the "Mission: Impossible III" star criticized her for taking antidepressants after the birth of her first daughter.

Cruise, echoing the position of Scientology, said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show that depression can be treated with exercise and vitamins rather than drugs.

Shields, who wrote "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression," has dismissed the actor's remarks as a "ridiculous rant" and "a disservice to mothers everywhere."

"I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruise has never suffered from postpartum depression," she wrote in an op-ed piece in The New York Times last year.

Cruise's mea culpa comes days after his company, Cruise/Wagner Productions, signed a two-year financing deal with First & Goal LLC, an investment partnership headed by Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.

Cruise/Wagner broke ties with Paramount Pictures last week in an unusually public dispute. Sumner Redstone, chairman of Paramount parent Viacom Inc., split with Cruise through an interview in the Wall Street Journal, saying the actor's public behavior, including jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch, and his aggressive defense of Scientology, alienated moviegoers and cost Paramount money at the box office.

Cruise's producing partner Paula Wagner slammed Redstone last week, calling his comments "surprising" and unbusinesslike. She said it was their decision not to renew their 14-year partnership with Paramount, choosing instead to follow a long-standing desire to make smaller, character-driven films on their own.

Cruise sent Brooke Shields a basket of baby gifts when her second child was born in April 2006, but he didn't say much about even though it probably would've bolstered his image. To paraphrase an old saying, "When you do wrong it's frontpage news, when you make amends it's buried in the back pages."

I am tired of hearing that Tom Cruise is/was a "great actor". That is a matter of opinion and one I don't agree with. He has always struck me as very arrogant which is something that turns me off completely. He is his own biggest fan.

Everyone does have a right to their own opinion. I do believe no one has the right to judge someone personally unless they are felling exactally what that person is feeling. Whether it be physically or mentally.
I don't think it's right to judge Mr.Cruse either. I don't know what he's feeling when he is jumping up and down on a couch,or why he feels it's right to pass judgement on his friends.
I do have to say, Ms. Shields has handled this very gracefully.
I am very much looking forward to purchasing her Book.."Down Came the Rain."

whew! glad to know things were patched up. can't have anyone *offended* now can we? especially our "precious moms". no wonder shields handled it with class and grace--she was too medicated to understand the consequences of cruise's truth!
i think karlie23 speaks for many in this nation (on and off medication) when she expresses her fantasy to shoot cruise the deviant. others are content to tame him in less violent, but more sadistic ways--suggesting he take the very meds he criticizes. no-one wants scientology being shoved down our throats (least of all scientologists), but who wants a medical/pharmaceutical industry literally shoving pills down throats? don't believe it? take a walk down children's psych wards (or into many suburban homes, for that matter). we need to understand the larger social issues involved here (like gingrmac and monirod suggest), especially the ones that contribute to depression. otherwise, we're just taking some drugs to keep smiles on our faces as the train we're riding goes off the tracks.

I'm still a true fan of Tom but this is really too little too late. His publicist must have pushed him into this for sure...the studios are turning their backs on him. Hey Tom...since when did you start believing that you are an authority on anything...you're an actor...a good one...bust still an actor. You have a "job" just like the rest of us...keep your opinions to yourself from now on. I do agree with your view on the the anti-depressant thing...but as human beings we all go through "rough patches" & a lot of us don't have the money that you do to get the therapy that we need. Being RICH must be nice!!!
