(CBS)  Kyra Sedgwick made her acting debut on the soap opera "Another World" in 1982, when she was just a teenager.

She guest-starred on the hit series "Miami Vice" and Steven Spielberg's TV series "Amazing Stories" before getting her big movie break in Oliver Stone's 1988 film "Born on the Fourth of July," in which she played Tom Cruise's girlfriend.

She became more well known in movies like 1992's "Singles" and 1995's "Something to Talk About," which also starred Julia Roberts. Sedgwick landed her own TV series in June 2005, playing Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson, an unorthodox detective with a southern twang, on TNT's "The Closer."
