Jasmine, a six-month-old golden retriever, got into trouble while on a morning run Monday with her owner, Michael Rubin, and another family pet, a border collie. Rubin says Jasmine ran ahead to the edge of a pond, where she met up with a hungry alligator.
Rubin couldn't see what was happening at first, but he heard Jasmine's cries, went to investigate, and says he saw her head inside the mouth of the alligator.
Rubin told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he thought the alligator was about 7 feet long.
"I thought she was dead," he told the Sun-Sentinel. "But at that point I wasn't going to let him have my dog."
The intrepid Rubin jumped right into the water and started beating the gator with his fists. Not giving up easily, the reptile rolled in the water with the dog in its mouth. Rubin eventually managed to free his pet.
At a local animal hospital, Jasmine was treated for cuts and puncture wounds. She's now home and doing fine.
