Working For Younger Bosses

For many baby boomers, dealing with a much younger, and sometimes less experienced supervisor can be a very a delicate balancing act.

In The Early Show series "Reaching for More," Peggy Northrop, Editor in Chief of More magazine, discusses such workplace generation gaps.

She says workplaces often consist of more than one generation, groups of workers who have different needs and ambitions, all trying to get along.

According to Northrop, multi-generational workplaces may be filled with challenges: "A big age spread can be very jarring. You may not share the same cultural references. If your colleagues or bosses are angsting about turning 30, and you're 45, you're going to feel strange. As a 40-something woman, you definitely have more experience and more knowledge. You may find it hard to be deferential to some one less experienced."

However, Northrop adds, it's not all bad. There are some benefits from it: "You can always learn something. They may be much more adept at marketing or using technology in new ways. If you've been out of the work force for awhile, exposing yourself to much younger workers might be just the ticket for your next move."

In the segment, Northrop addresses multi-generational workplaces and the challenges and benefits of working for a younger boss.

Exam Anxiety

Lots of students break into a cold sweat at the mere thought of taking a test. So, a growing number of schools are offering innovative programs to help ease the anxiety of pupils who stress out on test day.

In The Early Show's "Study Hall" segment today, Melinda Murphy took a look at two such programs.

AARP's Annual National Day of Service

Today is the AARP's annual National Day of Service, when thousands of volunteers across the country hit the streets to make life better in their communities.

One project will take place in New Orleans, where the devastation of Hurricane Katrina is still being felt in a huge way.

Brenda Porche's home is standing, but the interior was completely destroyed by the storm. So, some AARP volunteers are stepping up and will begin restoring her home today.

Porche spoke with co-anchor Harry Smith on The Early Show today, along with AARP COO Tom Nelson, in the "Young at Heart" segment.
