Moving Forward Can Be Costly
This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.
It's so sad, really sad — the wrangling that's gone on at the World Trade Center over building and memorials.
Construction has finally begun on the Freedom Tower — the shining, 1,776-foot-tall skyscraper that will take the place of the World Trade Center Towers. It's hoped that the tower's construction will help revitalize Lower Manhattan, but finding tenants might be tough. Most of the tenants so far are federal agencies, and some of the agencies' employees have already expressed doubts about working in a place that will become a target the minute it opens.
In Oklahoma City, several federal employees actually refused to work in the new federal building constructed after American terrorist Timothy McVeigh blew up the old one. They said they just couldn't do it.
Now comes news that the price tag for the World Trade Center memorial will be more than $1 billion. Moving forward sometimes is agony.
