Media outlets and bloggers have been mulling over the subject for weeks, but chatter suddenly got louder after syndicated entertainment show "Extra" aired a clip of Britney at a Malibu, Calif., nail salon sporting a slightly bulging belly. Other online news sources have reported she's having a girl.
Reps for the star haven't confirmed or denied the new pregnancy reports.
Also under the microscope is Spears' marriage to aspiring rapper Kevin Federline. Break-up rumors spawned when she reportedly didn't show up for an album listening party recently.
Adding more fuel to the rumor fire, "In Touch" weekly is reporting that Britney has hired a "babysitter" to monitor him.
"The last thing Britney wants to do is accompany Kevin on all his club dates," an "insider" told the magazine. "That's why she hired a babysitter — a person who will keep Kevin from misbehaving and report directly back to her."
According to "In Touch," Spears, 24, enlisted the "sitter" after one of her bodyguards reportedly quit because he couldn't handle her husband's partying ways.
There was hope that some of these rumors might be put to rest May 4 when various news outlets, including "Today Show," announced that the singer was holding a press conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Hours later Spears' publicist said in an exclusive e-mail to CBSNews.com that "there is no press conference."
Spears and Federline tied the knot in a secret ceremony in September 2004. Their first child, Sean Preston, was born Sept. 14, 2005.
