Only days after fiancé Katie Holmes gave birth to their daughter, Suri, Cruise flew to Rome for the film's premiere, and spent eight hours there, according to Mary Hart of "Entertainment Tonight."
Cruise told reporters the real "Mission Impossible" was leaving Suri and Holmes — but, with a gentle push from his fiancée, the superstar headed to the Italian capital.
"I wasn't going to come," Cruise said, "but Kate said, you know, 'Go, go.'"
Before the premiere, Hart says, Cruise had enough time to greet a sea of adoring fans and answer reporters' questions at a news conference held in a gallery amid 17th-century Renaissance artwork.
"It's clear that Tom is deeply touched by the outpouring of congratulations for his new daughter," says Jann Carl of "Entertainment Tonight," who also went to Rome.
Carl asked Cruise how many times he'd called or text-messaged home and Cruise replied simply, "Can't count."
"Mission Impossible III" opens in the United States on May 5. Hart says Cruise had considered skipping the movie's London debut and Paris debuts on Wednesday, but changed his mind, not wanting to disappoint his fans.
Cruise says he's thrilled with every aspect of infant care, and he told Carl he and Holmes have worked out their own, specially-named baby care system.
