Grown-Up Jobs Through Kids' Eyes
(CBS)
It's not always easy to get a grasp of what other people really do for a living. And for children, that's especially true. So as Dave Price travels around the country, he decided to check out the child's perspective on work. After speaking with elementary school children in Tampa, Fla., and West Nyack, N.Y., he brought back some very interesting messages.
Work can be a real drag
Dave: Nick, your dad is at work for eight, 10, 12 hours a day what's he doing for all of those 12 hours?
Nick: Trying to sneak out
Dave: Trying to sneak out?
Nick: Yeah, so then he can come home.
Dave: You know what Nick with a kid like you who needs surveillance cameras?
Dave: So your dad is a delivery man.
Vinny: Yeah.
Dave: Do you think he has fun at work?
Vinny: No.
Dave: So what do you think your dad could do to have more fun at the job?
Vinny: He could get paid more.
Dave: That would be more fun if he was paid more?
Vinny: Yes, he's got this boss named Bob who just doesn't pay that much.
Lunch is the best part of the day
Dave: Does your dad have a favorite part of the day?
Vinny: Yeah.
Dave: What's that?
Vinny: Lunch time. (laughs)
Dave: Lunch time.
Vinny: Fifteen minutes of free time.
Dave: And I assume he has his food delivered?
Vinny: No, he goes to Burger King.
Dave: Do you think your dad loves his job?
John: I think.
Dave: Why is that, what do you think your dad loves about his job?
John: Lunch break.
Dave: I love the same thing about my job, I ought to meet your dad.
You can get hurt if you're not careful
Dave: Has your mom ever messed up at work?
Shane: Yeah, three thousand times.
Dave: Three thousand times. What did she do?
Shane: She cut someone's hair wrong and she cut someone's ear off.
Dave: Has she ever thought of changing careers?
Shane: No.
Dave: Shawn, what does your mom do?
Shawn: She works at the post office and sorts mail.
Dave: What's the funnest thing about her job?
Shawn: I think sorting mail and putting it into the machine.
Dave: And what's probably the most boring thing she does, the worst part of the job?
Shawn: Knowing that her clothes may get caught into the machine and she might get flattened out into sand paper.
Sometimes kids know best
Dave: If you had some advice for your dad on how to be a better worker what would you tell him?
Jagger: I'd tell him to suck it up, just work hard and get it over with.
Dave: Do you want to be a deli man some day like your dad?
Thomas: No.
Dave: Why not?
Thomas: I want to be a lawyer.
Dave: You want to be a lawyer, well that's close to being a deli man because you are both selling bologna.
Dave: Have you learned anything about working from your mom and dad, what have you learned?
Emily: That I'm going to choose my job wisely.
Dave: Why is that?
Emily: Because I don't want to end up in a bad job that I don't like.
