Tomatoes By Mother's Day?

I know it's only February, but I'm thinking about planting my garden this weekend. Fifty-some degrees in New York today; it was 60-something a week ago.
I figure if I put in my tomatoes and peppers this week, maybe I'll be able to pick some by April — or by Mother's Day for sure.
I saw parade pictures from the big winter carnival in Minnesota this week. People were marching down the street in jackets, and there was no snow. On the other hand, it's been cold as all get out in Europe; really cold — 32 degrees below centigrade for days in Moscow.
I need a really smart scientist to tell me straight up what the deal is here. Yes, I've heard the explanation that the warm temperatures are just part of the natural planetary cycles of up and downs. But that was before I heard that last year was the world's warmest year on record, and some people believe it might have been the warmest in the last 10,000 years.
Look, I get tomatoes by Mother's Day — I'll make my own conclusion.
