ONLINE GIFT CERTIFICATES
Gift certificates are the No. 1 last-minute gift and the most popular stocking stuffer. At GiftCertificates.com, you can choose several retailers that offer delivery by e-mail. Or, buy a "super certificate" so the recipient can pick a participating retailer at a later date from among hundreds of choices.
That's a great move if someone gives you a gift you weren't expecting and you think, "Oh boy, we didn't get them anything." There's even a selection of gift certificates that can be e-mailed and will arrive in a matter of minutes, so you can literally send them Christmas morning.
Among those offering gift certificates delivered via e-mail are Barnes & Noble, Cooking.com, L.L. Bean, Lands End, Overstock.com, REI, Sephora.com, The Sharper Image, and TheSportsAuthority.com
MUSIC
Another option is downloadable music, such as Apple's iTunes, at apple.com. Buy a gift certificate for $10-$200 redeemable at iTunes.com for songs, albums, play lists, audio books, music videos or TV show episodes for download onto a computer or iPod. For last-minute shopping, you can opt to have the gift certificate sent via e-mail, for near-immediate delivery, or print the gift certificate on your own printer and deliver it to the lucky recipient in-person or in a greeting card.
TRAVEL
Southwest Airlines offers an e-gift card, at this link. They can be bought in any amount between $10 and $1,000 and are good toward the purchase of any Southwest Airlines ticket online, on the phone, and at ticket counters. You can write a personal message and enter the recipient's e-mail address for free e-mail delivery.
JetBlue, Continental and other airlines offer similar gift certificates that you can purchase online.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Magazine subscriptions are traditional favorites. You can order them online now, on sites such as Amazon.com, all the way up until the last minute. Examples: Rolling Stone, $12.97 per year; People magazine, $56.94 for 6 months; Sports Illustrated, $19.95 for 6months; National Geographic, $34.00 per year.
Two free electronic delivery options are personalized magazine gift cards you print and give as a gift, and personalized magazines e-cards sent to the recipient's e-mail address.
MOVIES
Netflix.com is an online movie rental service that offers a library of 55,000 DVDs, operates by subscription, and offers free shipping and no late fees to members. Choose the plan and number of months you want to purchase. The service is sold in one-month increments. Plans vary by the number of DVDs available to rent per month: one month, one DVD goes for $9.99; one month, three DVDs is $17.99. You can personalize your gift with a message, pay by credit card, and select whether to print the gift certificate and give it in person or e-mail it to the recipient.
