Baby Tossed Out Window Caught

A New York man made the catch of a lifetime after a woman threw her baby out the window of a burning third-floor apartment in the Bronx, N.Y. Wednesday.

The hero, Felix Vasques, 39, a New York Housing Authority supervisor and former lifeguard, is seen on surveillance video grabbing the three-week-old boy.

The fire broke out in the kitchen and left the mother, Tracinda Foxe, 30, and the newborn, Eric Guzman, cornered by smoke and flames, and trapped by a window. She screamed out the window for help.

She says she also prayed.

"I said, 'God, please save my son,'" a weeping Foxe told the Daily News in its Thursday editions. "I prayed that someone would catch him and save his life."

Vasques says he didn't know what the woman was holding out the window until after she let the baby drop. He says he caught the soot-covered infant "like a football" and "just in time," and blew air into his lungs in order to get him breathing again.

"He coughed and started yelling and crying," Vasquez continued. "It's a miracle, just a miracle, especially in the holidays now, and it's a beautiful thing."

Vazquez, a father of three, added, "I didn't think. I just reacted."

He also happens to be a catcher on his local baseball team.

Moments after Foxe tossed Guzman, New York firefighters D.J. Martin and Bobby Eustace burst into the burning apartment, found a hysterical Foxe and gave her an oxygen mask. Mother and son were treated at a hospital and released.
