The life and loves of one of Hollywood's most bankable stars.

(CBS/AP)  More threatening could be their dramatic openness.

"Public discussion and public consideration of their relationship is on the table," says Hackett. "It will be exceedingly difficult if not impossible to remove that."

He adds that actresses such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez turned much more tightlipped after going through tabloid-heavy romances.

However, Fuller thinks the candor may be a positive, more natural existence.

"In some ways I think that's very smart," she says. "I do wonder why certain celebrities insist on trying to hide the fact that they're having a relationship. ... In some ways that fuels the gossip much more than being completely open and public about it.

"I think, actually, they're going to make it easier for themselves."

Still, psychologist Joyce Brothers, for one, is concerned Cruise and Holmes have been caught up in their own momentum.

"People easily get pushed into relationships in Hollywood," Brothers says. "When you have two people, it's double the publicity. It's cubed. There's an enormous amount of desire to push it along."

But, Brothers adds, "A lot of people have lost their heads and hearts in Paris."

Newly engaged couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have at least one thing in common: When it comes to their past loves, they've kept it in the business. Here's a look at his former leading ladies and her bygone beaus.

TOM CRUISE

Melissa Gilbert. 1982. Cruise dated the "Little House on the Prairie" star when they were teens. Cruise and Gilbert had separated by the time her senior prom came around.

Rebecca De Mornay. 1983-1985. De Mornay played a street smarts prostitute who bedded Cruise's home-alone student in "Risky Business." Off-screen, the pair lived together for more than two years.

Mimi Rogers. 1987-1990. The couple, who both shared a faith in the Church of Scientology, married in a supersecret ceremony with Emilio Estevez as best man. Cruise and Rogers divorced nearly three years later without much explanation, although the split happened shortly after Cruise met Nicole Kidman on the set of "Days of Thunder."

Nicole Kidman. 1990-2001. For nearly 10 years, Cruise and Kidman were Hollywood's power couple, starring in "Far and Away" and "Eyes Wide Shut." They have two children, Isabella and Connor.

Penelope Cruz. 2001-2004. Cruise met Cruz on the set of "Vanilla Sky." The duo dated for three years, then amicably split, according to their publicists. Cruz moved on to her "Sahara" co-star Matthew McConaughey.

KATIE HOLMES

Joshua Jackson. 1998-1999. Holmes dated her "Dawson's Creek" co-star during the first two seasons of the TV show. He was reportedly her first true love.

Chris Klein. 2000-2005. Holmes and Klein dated for three years before he proposed in December 2003. The "American Pie" actor frequented red carpet premieres with Holmes before they called off their engagement in March.
