Star Unusually Outspoken About Love, Life And Religion

(CBS)  Tom Cruise may be in love, but his recent shenanigans promoting his film "War of the Worlds" have been out of character for the normally private actor. Many are still wondering if his professed love for Katie Holmes is real?

The latest issue of US Weekly magazine has them walking down the aisle, with a headline that reads "Getting Married!" The magazine's Katrina Szish tells The Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm the couple is not engaged, but notes, "sources say that he wants to seal the deal."

It has been a whirlwind romance and nobody seems to be buying it. It has been "two months of craziness – a lot of intensity very, very fast," Szish says. "Any time that happens, people are going to be skeptical. And we're still waiting to see the outcome."

After their romance became public in Italy, Cruise set tongues wagging in Hollywood and elsewhere with an hour-long appearance on the May 23 "Oprah" show, during which he jumped on and off of couches and knelt on the floor professing his love for his new girlfriend.

"I think most people out there, across the board, say this can't be real," Szish says. "How can this once private actor all of a sudden be making such a spectacle of himself? And again, his sister [Lee Anne De Vette], who is his spokesperson - I call her his spokessister - she says he's just really, really happy."

Nevertheless, according to The New York Times, studio executives are nervous about the star's behavior, which also included being outspoken about his religious beliefs.

Szish says, "Seems like he's been more vocal than ever before about Scientology. His sister said, 'Listen, people are asking him about Scientology. He's not talking about it any more than he used to.' But there are rumors circulating that perhaps 'Mission Impossible III' production will be delayed. Nobody knows if it's the high cost of the production or because of Tom's erratic behavior."

In a series of television interviews on "Access Hollywood" last week, the star spoke at length about his passion for Scientology, and even criticized Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants. Scientology considers modern psychiatry and its medications to be harmful.

After the criticisms, Shields has suggested the leading man keep his opinions to himself.

"Tom Cruise's comments are irresponsible and dangerous," Shields said in London last week. "Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them."

And there are reports that just a month after Holmes and Cruise became an item, Holmes, a Christian, is converting to Scientology, the religion founded by the science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

"She's 100 percent sucked in," Szish says, "Some of her friends and sources have said that since their fateful meeting out in L.A., she's not returned to her apartment in New York City. Those are the reports. It seems like in the past two months, her life has changed completely. And she's studying Scientology, going to tutoring centers, and is very involved."

Holmes also switched agents at the Creative Artists Agency, from her long-time representative to Cruise's representative.
