Interactive Year In Review The year's biggest events, greatest achievements and most memorable figures.
Suze Yalof Schwartz of Glamour magazine showed viewers of The Early Show how in another "Chic on a Shoestring" segment.
The big trend for this New Year's Eve: Clutches and brooches, jackets and skirts.
Take, for instance, a little Karl Lagerfeld dress. An effective way to update it is with a brooch, a bright-colored satin clutch, and silver high-heeled shoes.
It's about the brooch this year, but are people going to be wearing them a year from now? Says Suze, "They probably will not, but they should hold on to them, because they'll be wearing them the year after! You know how fashion is."
In the game, contributors Debbye Turner and Laurie Hibberd tied for first place, each correctly guessing the steal in two of the three choices. Co-anchor Gretchen Carlson got just one of the three choices right.
LOOK No. 1
SPLURGE: 1950s Sherman LG 3D Leaf brooch (from Jeffrey NY): $650
Clutch: $495
Manolo Blahnik silver d'orsay pumps (Jeffrey NY): $630
GRAND TOTAL: $1,775
STEAL: Ben-Amun brooch for $125
Clutch: $95
Steve Madden open-toe silver pumps: $79.95 with Catherine Stein Design rhinestone clip-on earrings on pumps: $29
GRAND TOTAL: $328.95
What's the difference? The less expensive shoes didn't come with the rhinestones; we simply added the rhinestones with clip-on earrings. The more expensive brooch is a vintage one.
LOOK No. 2: We took the wardrobe staple, black pants, and jazzed them up, adding the hot cropped jacket (all the rage). Notice that these are not boxy but very fitted. Then we added sparkle by using a huge cocktail ring – a chunky, colorful way to add glamour.
SPLURGE: D&G Blazer (Bloomingdales): $775
Jennifer Miller citrine cocktail ring: $3,000
Kate Spade crocodile purse: $3,000
GRAND TOTAL: $6,775
STEAL: XOXO Blazer: $79
Banana Republic cocktail ring: $45
Etienne Aigner yellow faux croc: $89
GRAND TOTAL: $213.00
What's the difference? The more expensive cocktail ring is citrine set in 18K gold and has a diamond trim, while the less expensive ring is just made of glass. The more pricey purse is genuine crocodile, unlike the faux one on the less expensive look. And the more expensive jacket is from D&G.
LOOK No. 3: We took the black turtleneck and made it sexy for the holidays. Everyone has a black turtleneck in their wardrobe, and if they don't, they definitely need to buy one. We paired the turtleneck with gold brocade skirt, which adds a modern twist to a simple black turtleneck. Gold is still very popular, so we added gold pointy toe sling-backs and embellished handbags to create a look that's over-the-top fabulous!
SPLURGE: Celine brocade skirt (Bloomingdales): $620
Sergio Rossi blue suede clutch: $995
Sergio Rossi gold pumps with $1,030
GRAND TOTAL: $2,645
STEAL: Love...Ady gold brocade skirt (from Bloomingdales): $88
Moyna green beaded clutch (from Searle): $228
Colin Stuart gold pumps: $58
GRAND TOTAL: $374
What's the difference? The more expensive skirt is by Michael Kors for Celine, so you're paying a good amount for the prestige. The more expensive shoes are made from real snakeskin, unlike the less expensive pair.
