Holidays Pay Off Big For Amazon
(AP)
Amazon.com said this holiday shopping season was its busiest ever.
On its top day, the Seattle online retailer said it handled 2.8 million orders.
Amazon also said that consumer electronics replaced books for the first time as the largest sales category. The top selling electronics products were the Apple iPods and a Phillips DVD player.
Amazon said it shipped products to 217 countries. More than 100,000 went to U.S. military personnel.
The company said it sold more than one watch per minute since November 25th.
Its music store sold more than 1 million units per week for two consecutive weeks. The hottest sellers were U2's "How to Dismantle an Atom Bomb," Clay Aiken's "Merry Christmas with Love," and Nirvana's box set "With the Lights Out."
DVD's were a big item. On one day, Amazon says it received 13,000 orders for "Lord of the Rings, Return of the King."
Top vide game sellers were Halo Two and Grand Theft Auto.
The top selling books were "America" by Jon Stewart and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom.
