'Shrek 2' Brings Home The Green

The first "Shrek" movie won the Oscar for Best Animated film and made $268 million at the box office. "Shrek 2" took in $440 million. Now, the sequel is also cashing in on the DVD market.

The Early Show entertainment contributor Laurie Hibberd notes that much of the Shrek success has been attributed to the stars who contributed the voice talent -- among them -- Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.

She says returning to do 'Shrek 2'was a no brainer: "When you are part of something that has such a great message and is so well received and the message is delivered with great humor — something so clever and smart — why wouldn't you go back for a second serving of that?"

Eddie Murphy believes "Shrek 2" is even better than the first. "The movie, and I know it sounds cliched and actorish to say," he observed, "but the movie is just a great movie. Everybody in it does a great job, and the movie looks incredible. And I love Antonio Banderas as Puss In Boots — the new addition to the cast is really cool.

For Mike Myers, Hibberd reports, "Shrek 2" was a chance to once again voice the beloved ogre, even if it wasn't the voice he originally intended.

"Originally," Myers reveals, "I recorded about 3/5th of it with a Canadian accent … and they had to reanimate parts of it … because as I did it in Scottish, I improvised a whole bunch of stuff.

"And after that one complete session of Scottish, I got this really long, beautiful letter from Steven Speilberg, thanking me for caring and saying how important it was that I came clean with them and said I could do better, and that was inspiring. And I thought that was great. And months later, I found out how much it actually cost them" to reanimate certain parts.

In retrospect, Hibberd reflects, it was an investment well worth making. The $40 million that "Shrek 2" garnered made it the third-highest grossing film ever.

Earlier this week, the cast reunited at a party in Los Angeles to celebrate the home video release which, Hibberd says, looks to be another blockbuster. In it's first three days of release, it sold a record 11 million DVDs.

The DVD has extras that include a behind-the-scenes documentary, games for kids, and a special, animated spoof, "Far, Far Away Idol," with guest judge Simon Cowell.

"SHREK 3" is already in the works, with hopes of releasing it in 2006, Hibberd adds.
