(CBS)  As kids across the country get ready for a new school year, they can jump straight to the head of the class with some of the latest back-to-school fashions. The Early Show style maven Christy Ferer has the following suggestions.

Trend: Multi-colored
Smart kids know that when it comes to fashion, color is key. This ultra chic multi-colored poncho from The Children's Place for $19.50 is a must for fall. Pair it with a sparkly tee, $7.50, denim skirt, tights and patchwork clogs for a look that's A+.

Trend: Animal Prints
The classroom is where the wild things are this fall with girls in animal prints.
