Super Bowl : A Ton Of Security

This week's commentary by 60 Minutes II Columnist Bill Geist.
It's Super Bowl week in Houston and a super marching band, 360 members strong, is tuning up, and getting in step.

The media hordes are pouring in for the annual battle over sound bites -- though you have to wonder if they are really worth fighting for.

While these players prepare for the Super Bowl, across town, other NFL stars were competing in lesser games designed to sell products. One is called the Chunky "Soup" Bowl, a bizarre event where players and their moms race around a conference room in an old chuck wagon.

Down the hall, Jerry Rice and Hall of Famers Bobby Bell and Jim Taylor combat the scourge of snoring for Breathe Right nasal strips. And former superstars Dan Marino and Joe Montana take part in a competition -- uh, oh, there's a turnover!

At this Super Bowl, security concerns are paramount. Twenty-five federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are using the latest in high technology.

Call me old-fashioned but nothing gives me a greater sense of security than six gigantic men.

With all the celebrities coming to town this week, business is booming for Big J Security and Bodyguard Services, whose clients include rappers P. Diddy and Jay-Z.

"I'm big J, we've got Double A, Big John, Big Steve, Big Mike," says Big J.

Does being big help? "My mother fed us well growing up," he says.

I certainly feel a lot safer here at the Super Bowl knowing that in the midst of all the hoopla and spectacle, there is a ton of security here -- or in my case, almost exactly one ton of security.
