(CBS)  Charlie Sheen returns to the small screen Monday night when the fall television season begins in earnest.

He is the star of "Two and a Half Men," a situation comedy about a fun-loving bachelor whose life is transformed when his divorcing brother and nephew suddenly appear on his doorstep.

Charlie Sheen plays a character named Charlie Harper, a fun-loving womanizing bachelor whose romantic life is about to go from sizzling to soggy.

In a behind-the-scenes interview with The Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen, Sheen says the show is “about relationships with my brother and with this child and it's about inviting these people into my life who are at some point going to make me whole.”

Sheen visits The Early Show on Monday to talk more about the show, his career and personal life.

The 38-year old Sheen says he is thrilled with the sitcom’s time slot. It debuts after “Everybody Loves Raymond” and before “CSI: Miami.” The real success will come, he says, when the American public weighs in. He says "time slots and cute children" won't mean anything until people see it.

The sitcom also has a successful team behind it: co-creator Chuck Lorre was responsible for "Dharma and Greg” and co-star Jon Cryer has been in a number of movies and series. He and Sheen acted together back in 1991 in "Hot Shots."

The show also stars character actress Holland Taylor who plays Charlie and Alan (Jon Cryer)'s socialite mother. She had roles in "The Practice" the “Spy Kids” movies and in “Legally Blonde.”

Coming up for Sheen is also “Scary Movie 3,” which opens Oct. 24. He stars alongside wife Denise Richards (“Wild Things”) in a spoof of the movie "Signs."

Richards, who married Sheen in June 2002, is pregnant with their first child. The two met while shooting the independent film, “Good Advice” in 2000.

Sheen has starred in "Platoon," "Wall Street" and the "Major League" movies. He's a big baseball fan and former player (he also starred in "Eight Men Out") and has paid a great deal of money for various baseball memorabilia.
